Frigid (The Frenemy Series Book 1) by Kate Benson (31)

dash

What the fuck is taking her so long?

I glance at the clock for what has to be the fifteenth time in the last minute, blowing out a long, low breath of frustration.

Once I’d signed my release papers and gotten my shit back, I swallowed my annoyance as my call went straight to voicemail and sent her a text from my rapidly dying cell phone. I’m not trying to be an impatient prick, but after spending a night in jail for defending her freaking honor, it’d be nice to get the hell out of here.

Ten minutes later, she finally texted back.

Stop rushing me! I’ll be there in a second!

“Oh, my God,” I groan, resting my back against the wall behind me, biting my lip and stifling a humorless laugh before I glance down at my screen.

I’m about to type a reply, trying my best to remain calm and not place my overwhelming frustration onto her when I hear a familiar low rumble from the parking lot, the sound tugging at my lips.

I stand, moving toward the exit as she pulls in where I’d told her to in the back of the lot, away from any other cars.

“Holy shit. She actually listened to me,” I whisper to myself, the shocking realization making my steps slow for a second before I hear “Freedom” by George Michael blaring out of the speakers, making me roll my eyes.

She steps out, her long, blonde hair whipping slightly in the wind and she’s smiling wide, her laughter singing across the lot.

“You were so close, baby!” I gripe, my chest clenching when she comes to a stop in front of me. “What did the note say about music?”

“Yeah, yeah, I know,” she sighs dramatically, pulling her sunglasses off and revealing her big, blue eyes. “Classic rock only and nothing younger than her.”

“Unless it’s…”

“Prince,” she cuts me off, rolling her eyes and smirking up at me. “I know, but I did everything else you asked me to do. I even remembered the lipstick.”

“I see that,” I husk, taking in her full, bright red lips.

“Besides, if I start letting you order me around all the time, you might not like me very much anymore.”

“Yeah,” I consider, gripping her waist and bending to give her a quick kiss. “Or I might just like you even more.”

“Well, I thought about that, but decided it was better not to risk it,” she shrugs. “Besides, I’ve been perfecting the art of annoying you my whole life. It would be a pity to waste all that training.”

“It is your true gift,” I sigh, making her chuckle as I wrap my arm around her shoulders and pull her close, kissing her hair.

I make my way to the passenger’s side, pulling her door open and glancing down at her when she hesitates, eyes narrowed.

“You’re not letting me drive anymore?” she asks, balking when I shake my head. “Why the hell not?”

“Baby, I told you! No one drives Sue but me. Mason’s never even driven her.”

“What the hell does Mason have to do with me driving your car? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard!” she argues, placing her hands on her hips. “I could see maybe a month ago, but now? No way,” she shakes her head. “No way you’re picking him over me.”

“I’m not picking anyone over anyone, Evie,” I counter. “But it’s different with Mason. He’s my best friend. There are things you trust your best friend with that you don’t let anyone else do.”

“Really?” she deadpans, dropping her eyes to the denim straining over my already hard cock before glancing back up at me, eyebrow raised. “That’s the card you’re going with right now?”

“Alright, fine. I see your point,” I smirk, shaking my head. “You’re still not driving.”

“You just let me!”

“I know. You better not ever tell anyone, either,” I admit with a smirk before my features grow serious, ushering her into her side. “Go on.”

“You’re dumb and I hate you,” she grumbles, rolling her eyes before she slips her sunglasses back on.

“Yeah, I know,” I chuckle as I walk around the back, lovingly placing a quick peck on the roof before slipping in behind the driver’s seat.

I adjust my seat, getting comfortable as I take in the familiar smell of the leather interior, leaning my head back against my seat as I glance over to find her watching me.

“For the record, if Sue was my girlfriend, I’d let you drive her.”

“You’re such a liar,” I narrow my eyes, smirking when I watch the corner of her lips quirk up on either side. “Besides, I did let you drive her.”

“Like two blocks,” she pouts.

“Two blocks further than anyone else,” I offer, pressing my lips to her hair and making her cheeks heat. “That’s gotta say something.”

“Yeah,” she says, her voice soft as she meets my eyes.

“Hungry?”

“A little,” she nods, taking my hand as I slip it into hers over the console, her features shifting into concentration as she loses herself in her thoughts. “Dash?”

“Hmm?”

“It happened at a frat party sophomore year,” she starts, making me stare back at her in confusion. “We almost didn’t get in, but Jodie’s brother was one of the pledges, so we lucked out.”

Jodie…

“Jodie,” I rasp, glancing over at her, my lips quirking up once I realize the gift she’s giving me. I reach across the seat, gripping her face and giving her a firm kiss. “Fuck, baby,” I husk against her lips. “I have never wanted you more.”

“You’re such a pig,” she smirks, rolling her eyes as I put the car in reverse and back out of the parking lot. “Anyway, someone brought moonshine and neither of us had ever had it…”

“That’s the best story I’ve ever heard, babe,” he sighs around his fries, leaning back in the booth across from me and making me sigh as I drain the last of my diet coke from the glass.

“I’m glad you enjoyed it,” I smirk, sliding out of the booth and slipping my hand in his, following him back to his car.

I glance down at my phone, sighing when I see the time and facing him with regret.

“What’s wrong?”

“I have a late class,” I admit as I hit the speed dial and put the phone to my ear. “I can’t miss it.”

“Damn,” he sighs, kissing my forehead. “Well, hop in. I’ll take you back.”

“Dash, you can’t,” I smirk. “You’re not allowed on campus for forty-three more days, ya psycho.”

“Oh, yeah,” he makes a face, watching me as I ramble off the address for the restaurant we’d stopped at and hang up the phone.

“A cab will be here in twenty.”

“Hmm…” he considers, glancing toward his car and then back to me suggestively, wrapping his arms around my waist, burying his lips into my neck. “I can work with twenty.”

“You don’t think it’ll make your other girlfriend jealous?” I tease, the feel of his lips quirking up on either side against my neck before he bites gently making my head swim.

“Nah,” he shakes his head, sucking on my ear before his voice comes out in husk. “She likes to watch.”

Fifteen minutes later, I slip back into the passenger’s seat, both our chests heaving.

“That’s gotta be some kind of a record for us,” he smirks, making me laugh breathlessly.

“Yeah, maybe,” I beam.

The taxi pulls up a moment later, making my stomach twists as he gives my hand a gentle squeeze.

“Any idea when you’ll be back in town?” he asks as we open our doors simultaneously.

“March,” I answer, biting my lip as I walk around the front of the car to meet him. “Spring Break.”

“Spring Break, huh?” he asks, making a face when I nod, gently tucking a strand of hair between my ear before giving me a gentle smile. “Well, at least you’re only a couple hours away.”

“You’re going to come back?” I ask, his words surprising me as we come to a stop beside the waiting cab.

“If you want me to,” he nods, his eyes dancing in amusement at my smile.

“I want you to,” I admit, leaning up to give him a kiss.

“Okay,” he presses his lips to mine once more. “I’ll call you later.”

“Good thinking,” I nod, turning to face him. “We have much to discuss.”

“Like what?” he asks, his eyebrows scrunching together in question as he opens my door and watches me slip inside.

“Oh, I don’t know,” I smile as I slip into my seat and shoot him a playful wink. “Like how you plan on telling Mason you’re screwing his little sister.”

“What? Me? You sneaky little shit!” he shouts, his jaw hanging open as I crack the window and peek out at him. “Evie, I already told you! You’re not pinning all this on me!”

“I’ll call you tonight, baby!” I call out of the window. “Drive safe! I love you!”
