Gater and Cass walked through the doorway of the lounge to find the girls sitting on the floor, laughing about the customers they had encountered throughout the night. Lilly caught Cass staring at her. The other girls trailed off when they realized Lilly wasn’t listening to a single word they had said since Cass walked in.
“Finally. Everyone else is gone except for Leo, Shorty, and Scott.” Cass sighed, sitting down behind Lilly and pulling her to him.

“Nope,” Mindy said. “I think we’re done with her and Lucy both. And Lilly, you can go too. Everything is done for the most part.”
“Come on, Gater. Let’s go home.” Ryan handed her tip bucket and her jacket to him before walking around the room to tell everyone goodbye.
Mindy disappeared to the front of the bar with Lucy when Ryan and Gater left, leaving Lilly and Cass alone in the lounge.

Cass stood up and lifted Lilly simultaneously. “Let’s go check it out.” He placed his hand around her waist and walked behind her.
Mindy was holding up three long pieces of register tape, the bottom of each one having a number in big letters. “We made six grand tonight on the registers!” Mindy danced in place.
“Oh my god!” Lilly stared at the paper in Mindy’s hand. “Six thousand dollars?” she shrieked.
Cass looked over the receipts, a look of pride on his face. “Kevin told me that when the bar was at its best, the most money it ever brought in in one night was twenty-five hundred dollars.” Lilly heard the sheer happiness in his voice when he spoke.
“We nearly tripled that tonight!”
“We did amazing because we are a kickass team,” Mindy chimed in.
“Yes, we are, and this kickass team member is about to go home. I’m exhausted.” Lilly hugged Mindy and then walked past Cass to the lounge to grab her things.
She didn’t have much to get, but when she came back, she slowed to listen to Mindy and Cass talking.
“She really likes you. You’ve put some kind of spark back in her eyes that I haven’t seen in a long time, maybe even ever.”
“I like her, a lot. I’ve never clicked with anyone so well, but with my lifestyle, I don’t know how well she would be able to adapt to it. The club takes up more than a lot of my time.” Cass sighed.
Lilly walked around the corner, deliberately interrupting their conversation. She was scared of what she may or may not hear.
“I’m out of here, y’all.” Lilly hugged Mindy one more time and then found herself in Cass’s arms once again—that familiar place that only he could take her to. A feeling of comfort and home that she could never remember feeling, yet it felt so known.

“I’m going to go for a drive. I’ll be home in about twenty minutes.”

“For what?”
“Not making me worry about you. If I would’ve gotten to your house and you weren’t there, I’d have sent out a posse to find you.” He said the words as if he were talking about anything in general. It wasn’t a threat; it was fact.

It felt good to get behind the wheel. These kinds of nights were always her favorite. The air was cool, the sky was clear, and there were a thousand stars just sitting in the sky, shimmering.
