Taking Avery: A Lilith's Army MC Novel by Ker Dukey, D.H. Sidebottom (17)

Being inside a clubhouse isn’t new to me, but this one feels different somehow. I’m used to being known by everyone and mostly ignored unless I want something, but right now, everyone is staring at me like I’m a fucking wizard about to perform magic tricks for them.

“Don’t sweat it, darlin’. They just never seen Frost with a girl before.” Denise smirks, pouring a drink and offering it to me. I shake my head. She shrugs and tips the glass back, swallowing the contents and hissing when the amber liquid disappears down her throat.

What did she mean ‘never seen Frost with a girl’? Is he into men? No way.

“How’d you bag him? Everyone will want to know the story.” She waggles her drawn-on eyebrows and clinks her fake nails against the bar. “You ain’t preggo, are you?” She leans forward as if I’m about to spill my secrets to her. Why does everyone automatically think I’m pregnant?

“No. I guess we just found a little of ourselves in each other. Biker brats and all.” I lift a shoulder. Her face is stoic as hell and I notice a few other ears piqued in our direction. “And we’re really compatible between the sheets, if you get my drift,” I add, winking, knowing that’s what they all want to hear. “I like it rough, dirty, and on top, and he likes it when I dominate him.”

Laughter roars around me.

“So Frost is the girl between the sheets?” a fat dude bellows.

Why would that make him a girl?

“He just likes to watch me work up a sweat. There’s nothing wrong with a man taking the back seat in the bedroom,” I scoff, and more laughter almost causes the room to shake.

“Fuck. No wonder he doesn’t bring his bitches here,” someone says.

“It’s because he’s the bitch,” the fat one adds, raising more laughter.

“Frost will have your balls if he hears you talking shit about him,” an older guy retorts to the fat guy.

“At least then he’ll have a pair.” He jeers back cackling.

The ridicules continue and I slink away. I was just trying to play a joke on Slade, but it got out of hand and now they all think he’s a submissive or something. He’s going to be pissed.

“Where are you going?” Denise calls after me.

“I want to make a phone call,” I tell her as she walks around the bar and follows me into the corridor.

“I’ll take you to Frost’s room for some privacy.” She sashays as she walks. Her ass is tiny compared to the hips spilling over the jean shorts she’s wearing.

“Here it is.” She pulls a key from her bra and I know I’m frowning because she giggles. “Don’t worry, princess. I have keys to all the boys’ rooms. Not for what you’re thinking though. My ass is taken.”

She slaps her own ass and waltzes back the way we came. “I won’t be far away. Holler if you need anything.”

“Thanks,” I call after her, and push into his room.

His room is spotless compared to his brother’s.

Walking around, I snoop inside his cabinets and drawers, but there’s nothing in them. A few sets of clothes, but that’s it. Nothing personal.

Sitting down on his bed, I pull my cell from my pocket. I don’t even know if Jenna will be at home or have her cell. My guts clench at the thought of what she went through and me not being there for her recovery. Although what happened wasn’t my fault, it feels personal, and my nerves chew away at me, worrying if she will forgive me.

Dialing her home line, my heart races as the phone rings. Four rings. I’m about to hang up when a deep voice answers. “Hello?”

I’m struck mute and I can’t find words to ask for her. Her dad always hated me.

“Jenna?” He grunts down the line.

A pit opens in my gut and worry clenches at my heart.

“Is that you? This is ridiculous! Stop being a brat and just come home!” he snaps before slamming the phone down.

She’s not at home. So where is she?

My palms sweat and the room closes in around me. I can’t breathe. My lungs constrict when my ribs seem to crush them. My hands claw at my throat and I race toward a small window above a desk. Climbing on top of the desk, I push it open and gasp as a breeze blows inside.

My feet falter and I almost slip when the bedroom door opens and Brenner walks in. My heart roars and it’s all I can hear. My head swims and acid burns my insides.

“Trying to flee already?” He sneers, flicking his wrist forward. Jenna stumbles into the room and hits the floor.

Oh my God.

Jumping down from the desk, I rush to where she’s getting herself to a sitting position. She doesn’t look distressed, even snorting and saying “opps.” at her fall. There’s little bruising around her throat and she has a black eye that’s healing.

Cupping her face with my palms, I stare into her unfocused eyes. They’re glassy and the pupils are like pin pricks.

“Jenna?” I whisper.

“Hey!” Her voice is singsong and she giggles.

“Are you okay?” I ask when she wraps her arms around my neck.

Her head bops up and down but there’s no rhythm to it. “I’m good. I missed you.” Releasing me, she smiles, showing me all her teeth.

“Why is she still here?” I ask Brenner, the venom in my tone clear.

He folds his arms, his muscles bulging as he does, and glares down at me like a fucking beast trying to intimidate its food. “Because she ain’t leaving. We can’t risk her getting talkative with the wrong people.”

Getting to my feet, I place my hands on my hips, trying to seep confidence I don’t feel around him. “You can’t just keep her prisoner! That wasn’t part of the deal.”

He takes a step toward me and the room darkens, almost warning of the monster inside it. “Who’s a prisoner? She likes it here. Isn’t that right, Scarlet?”

Scarlet?

She nods up at him like a grateful dog being thrown a treat.

He closes the space between us, backing me up against the wall. I can’t move; he’s caged me against him. “I call her Scarlet because of how red she bleeds when being spit-roasted. She’s quite the character. Drugs and compliments and she’s anyone’s.”

Bastard.

“Is that all it takes to get in your panties too?”

“Fuck you!” I spit.

“You’re no fucking princess here, no matter what bullshit they fed you to get you to say ‘I do’. I’ll be around, waiting, watching, and fucking taking whatever I want. You caused a rift between me and my father, and for that, you’ll pay.”

“I’m your brother’s wife. You can’t touch me.” I growl, rage massacring the fear.

He laughs, loud and menacing. “You’re nothing to him. He won’t protect you from me. No one will. No one can.” He grips my jaw and crashes his lips down on mine, biting until a pop splits the skin. Pulling back, he swipes the pad of his thumb over the cut and sucks it into his mouth. “Sweet, like I knew you would be. I bet you’re dripping from your cunt right now. This innocent shit doesn’t work with me.”

He’s crazy and disgusting.

“Scarlet!” he bellows as he releases me and walks toward the door. She scurries to her feet and goes to follow him.

“Wait!” I call out, reaching for her. “Stay here with me. You don’t have to go with him.”

What the hell is she on, and why is she acting like his lapdog?

“It’s fine, Av. Just let it go,” she slurs, and they both disappear.

My heart is thundering so loud inside my chest that it’s all I can hear. Running to the door, I turn the lock and go to the bathroom. Locking myself in, I slink to the floor and cry.

This shit is crazy. Why did I think everything might be okay? Fucking foolish, that’s what I am.
