Tate (Temptation Series Book 5) by Ella Frank (9)

Chapter Nine

“SO WHEN ARE you going to ask him?” Cole’s question was delivered in a hushed voice as he and Logan stood to one side of a taped-off office space, and Priest stood on the other side with Joshua Daniels.

Josh, who owned Creative Construction & Remodeling, was a longtime friend and client of theirs, and also happened to be the husband of Dr. Shelly Monroe. He had just finished walking the three of them off the elevator and showing them where the reception desk would be, and then explained how the glass walls of the new conference room would give the floor an open feeling and still have all the privacy of being soundproof.

Logan loved the openness of it all. Their current setup downstairs was good, but starting to get claustrophobic. With the three of them moving up here along with a few others, it would make for less clutter downstairs and, hopefully, a more productive workspace.

They’d all just come to a stop at the largest of the three office spaces on the floor. With no walls in place yet, just tape extending from the thick column they’d been told would support the interior wall, this was the only office that had a balcony running along one side of it. The very office that Logan had been eyeing.

Yes, this would be real sweet, he thought, letting his eyes wander around the area Josh had marked off. The question is, how hard am I going to have to fight for it? He turned to face Cole, and saw the same ridiculous grin he’d had on his face since they’d left Logan’s office, gotten in the elevator, and headed up here, and Logan inwardly groaned.

“So…?” Cole asked again. “When are you going to ask him?”

Shit, he’s worse than a fucking girl. “Can it, would you?”

If it were possible, Cole’s grin got wider, and he kept right on talking. “Does he know? Have you two talked about this?”

“Oh my God.” Logan turned so his back was to the other two in the room and pinned Cole with a look that screamed, Stop talking—now.

Cole’s lips curved. “I’ll take that as a no?”

“Take it any fucking way you want. Just zip it. Jesus, when did you get so chatty?”

“When my antiestablishment brother slipped up and said he wanted to get married.”

Logan grabbed a hold of Cole’s arm and spun him away from the other two. “Would you keep your voice down?” He glanced over his shoulder at Josh and Priest, who were now staring at them. “We’ll be right back. Just a little brotherly discussion over who’s getting the balcony.”

As he rounded back to Cole, Logan shook his head. “You’re not going to let this go, are you?” At the hell no expression that lit Cole’s eyes, Logan sighed. “Fine. Let’s see if I can break this down for you in two sentences or less. But then you have to agree to stop talking about it. Deal?”

“Deal.” Cole clamped his mouth shut.

Logan inhaled and then let it out on a rush, nervous to actually be talking about this for the first time with…well, anyone. “Okay so, no, we haven’t talked about it and he doesn’t know. And the answer to your other question is: I don’t know yet.” When Cole opened his mouth but then shut it, Logan rolled his eyes. “What? I can see that you’re dying to ask something.”

As a smile wide enough that it threatened to slide off Cole’s face hit, Logan instantly regretted allowing him to speak.

“Can I tell Rachel?”

As if I could stop you. “Would you really keep it from her if I asked you to?”

Cole thought about it for all of a second. “No.”

“Figures. Just…I don’t know. Keep it to yourselves, okay? I’m still getting used to the idea, and I want

“It to be a surprise?” Cole asked, his eyes widening. “Are you going to make it romantic? I could help you plan it. So could Rachel.”

Oookay. That’s enough about that.” When Cole went to speak again, Logan held up his finger. “That’s it. You promised. And because you’re being such a pain in the ass right now, you’re going to agree that the office with the balcony is going to be mine.”

“What? How is that fair?”

Logan turned around and started back in Josh and Priest’s direction, calling over his shoulder, “It isn’t. But you’re going to give it to me anyway.”

When Logan met up with the other two again, Josh looked between him and Cole and asked, “So? Who gets it?”

With a grumble, Cole gestured to Logan with his thumb.

“Somehow, I’m not surprised,” Josh said.

“I’m happy to take the middle office.” Priest spoke up for the first time, looking between the brothers. “It might be good to separate the two of you as much as possible. And I don’t need a big space to work hard.”

Logan arched an eyebrow at the not-so-subtle jab. “Neither do I. I just happen to want it.”

“Is he always this self-indulgent?” Priest asked.

And at the exact same time, Cole and Josh replied, “Yes.”

“Duly noted,” Priest said.

Logan left Cole’s side and walked past the massive pillar and into his new office, heading over to the wide expanse of the windows that flanked both sides of what would soon be all his. He stopped where the windows met in the corner and scanned the surrounding buildings.

It was an impressive view, that was for sure. He could see the Hancock Center and Water Tower Place, and as he continued to scan the area, Logan couldn’t help the satisfied smile that crossed his lips. Damn, my life is real fucking sweet right now.

New house. New office. Maybe the fates were all coming together to offer him up that ideal moment. The one where everything was just right and was directing him toward that final piece that would make the puzzle complete.

Yes. I like that, Logan thought, as he replayed Cole’s words from minutes ago. When…? Where…? How…?

It was time to make a plan. It was time to take that final piece and put it where it was supposed to go. And once that was done, then his life would be as close to perfect as possible.

But before all of that, he wanted to show Tate his new kickass office with a balcony.

IT HAD JUST turned six when Tate’s phone started to vibrate in his back pocket. He’d just finished serving an after-worker a gimlet when he pulled the phone free and saw Logan’s name on the screen, so he motioned to Robbie he was stepping out to take the call.

Raising the bar pass, Tate made his way out from behind it and then stepped through the private entrance where he’d be able to talk freely. “I was wondering when I’d hear from you.”

“Oh yeah? Missing my voice, were you?”

“Among other things.”

“Ooh, I like the sound of that.”

“Mhmm. I’m sure you do. But I doubt that’s why you called.”

“It could be, if you want it to be…” Logan said, and Tate loved the fact that if he did indeed want to take the conversation in that direction, Logan wouldn’t hesitate for one damn second.

“Have you forgotten that I’m at work, Mr. Mitchell?”

“No. Because that’s the only reason you would have not to be over here standing in what has to be the best office space I have seen in my fucking life.”

That smug tone in Logan’s voice had Tate laughing as he imagined him in some empty building in his immaculate suit surveying all that was his.

“Is that right? I assume you won the coin toss with Cole for the balcony?”

Logan paused. “Something like that. You’ve got to see it, Tate. It’s incredible. The view alone is…” He trailed off as though he was at a loss for words. “Are you guys busy down there tonight?”

“It’s decent, steady.” Tate checked his watch. “You going to be there a little longer? I could see if Robbie’s okay here and head down there for a tour.”

Yeah?”

“Yeah. Oh, and he’s good for Wednesday. You still able to get it off?”

They’d decided they needed to take a day this week to get stuck into packing if they were ever going to get out of the place within the two weeks they’d told Priest. “Yep, already cleared my schedule.”

“Awesome. Okay then, give me an hour. If something comes up, I’ll call.”

Logan hummed. “I’d sure hope so.”

Tate reached down and massaged a palm over his dick, which had instantly reacted to that velvety invitation, and then told Logan goodbye before hanging up and heading back inside to find Robbie.

He spotted him down the far end of the bar serving a customer, and when Tate came over, he excused himself and turned to face him. “What’s up, boss?”

Tate looked around the bar and saw Bianca out taking orders on one side, and Tim over clearing several of the high-top tables. Then he returned his attention to Robbie. “Do you think you’d be okay if I headed out early tonight?”

Robbie scanned the customers and nodded. “Yeah, I don’t see an issue. Monday is never insane, and Alex just got here. She’s out back.”

“Okay. Well, if you’re sure, I’m going to head out. Logan wants to show me the new office space their firm is renovating. He finally got to lay claim to it today.”

“Oh yeah. He told me he had to fight it out with his brother and

“And Priest,” Tate finished for Robbie when he stopped abruptly. “What’s with you and him? I know you clashed when he was dealing with your cousin. And sure, he’s a bit weird

“A bit?” Robbie said, shaking his head. “Now there’s an understatement. He’s missing a little thing I like to call humanity. Reminds me of a damn robot.”

Tate thought about that and had to agree. Priest wasn’t the most demonstrative person he’d ever met. “Maybe it’s an L.A. thing?”

“Maybe it’s an asshole thing.”

“Okay. Okay. Fair enough,” Tate said. “You sure you’ll be okay here?”

“Positive. Now go. Don’t let me be the one to stop Logan from showing off for you.”

Tate laughed and, with a wave, went upstairs to shower and change before he headed over to check out the newest addition to Mitchell & Madison.

“STILL HERE?”

LOGAN looked up from his computer to see Cole standing at his door with his briefcase in hand.

“Yeah. You’re here late.”

Cole winced and walked inside. “I know. I got caught up dealing with a custody case. I hate the ones with babies. Not even a year old and your parents are already fighting over you.”

Logan grimaced and sat back in his chair. “That’s rough.”

“That it is. Well, don’t spend all night here.”

“I won’t,” Logan said, getting out of his chair and coming around the desk. “Tate’s coming by. Due any minute now.”

At the mention of Tate’s name, Cole’s eyes sparked and Logan shook his head. “No. I already know what you’re thinking. I’m not asking him tonight.” Logan chuckled and heard himself say, “I actually like your idea from earlier, though.” When his brother frowned, Logan reminded him, “Something romantic.”

“Oh yes. I always wished I’d done the grand gesture in a more romantic way for Rachel.”

As Logan finally talked out loud about the whole marriage thing, he realized he was kind of excited about it. “Really? How’d you ask her?”

Cole gave him a wolfish grin. “In bed.”

Well, I’ll be damned. “You did not.”

“I did. She thought I was crazy.”

“I mean, you had only known her a couple of weeks,” Logan pointed out. “But really? In bed? I’d expect that from me. Not from you. Keeping it classy.”

Cole gave him a smug smile and shrugged. “Hey, she said yes, didn’t she?”

“That she did. And she’s had two of your kids since.”

“Mhmm. So I must be doing something right.”

“I think the actual phrase here would be: you must be doing her right. Now get the hell out of here, would you? I don’t want to make you feel bad when I show Tate the office you begrudgingly handed over to me today.”

Cole turned and headed for the door, and once he was there, he looked back to Logan and smiled. “You’re right about the office. Fuck you for that. But I’m very happy for you about Tate.”

Logan couldn’t have stopped the grin from crossing his mouth if his life depended on it, because he was pretty damn happy about that too.
