She appeared stunned, her mouth open as she gazed at me softly. Tears glistened in her eyes, and she winced. “You can’t fall in love with me, Euan. That wasn’t part of the plan.”
Picking her up and slamming her onto the sofa, I shot upright and glared at her. “The plan? Tell me, Elsie, when the fuck do you ever let go? When do you ever just live? Fuck the control you allow to control your life, and just – FUCKING – LIVE!”

“That you’re a coward,” I finished for her. “You reckon you’re a Weapon, then where’s your fucking ammo? Where’s your fight? I thought you had more strength!”
“It’s impossible, Euan.”
Shaking my head, I glared at her. “Nothing is impossible, and if anyone has taught me that, it’s you. You took down the last man on your list today. For what? To sit back and die. How the fuck will you know if your nightmares stop if you can no longer dream? How the hell can you move on if your life ends here?”
She looked away, fixing her stare on the carpet away from me. “What about my mother, if I leave then who’ll fight for her?”
I scoffed, gobsmacked. “And who the hell will help her and Sally when you’re dead? Jesus, Elsie!”
She ran her tongue over her teeth and smiled smugly to herself. Then, realising I was watching her, she blinked and looked away, refusing to meet my eyes while she masked the flicker of complacency I’d had a glimpse at.
I froze. “Why do I have this fear that I’m not seeing the whole picture here?”
“You are seeing everything, it’s just worry making you anxious.”
I narrowed my eyes at her, regarding her carefully, but she smiled softly and placed her hand on my chest. “I promise,” she whispered against my lips as she stared up at me with wide glistening eyes.
Sadness filled my heart, and I slid my fingers through her long hair. “When do you have to see Frank?”
“Not for a couple of days, he’s giving me some time to try and nail Peter.”
“Is he for real?” I scoffed, rage surging through my veins. “He’s terminating you, but he still wants you to complete your assignment! What kind of callous cunt would do that?”
She shrugged and stepped out of my arms. “I asked him to give me some time. I need to do this before… Well, before we go. It’s time for my mother to have a life, Euan. He’s taken so much from her; she needs me to do this!”
“I get that, I do, but I’m sure Frank has other Weapons to concentrate on that.”
“I’m the best Weapon he has; it’s logical that it be me.”
There was no reasoning with her. She was challenging me at every corner.
Finally relenting, allowing her to do it her way, I sighed and nodded. “Right, we get in that den, and we don’t come out until we have something concrete on Peter. Then, when I’ve sent it all to the agency, we get the fuck out! Your mother and Sally can come out of hiding and live, and we finally live.”
Her smile was as soft as her gaze on me and placing her hand on my chest, she lifted her face and kissed me just as tenderly. “And then we live,” she whispered.
“I love you, Elsie. I won’t let anyone destroy your soul; it’s too precious.”
“And you will always keep it warm for me.” Her grin was wider, genuine this time, and I relaxed a little.
Giving me a wink, she stretched her arms over her head. “Okay, Batman, let’s do this. You go get the equipment fired up, and I’ll make us some coffee.”
“Now that sounds like a plan.”
“You know how I like my plans,” she laughed, before disappearing into the kitchen, the sway of her arse making me groan inwardly. I wanted her like I’d never wanted anyone before. The need in me that she created with just one look had me clenching my fists and glaring at my hard cock.
