Whispers in the Dark (Dark Romance) by LeTeisha Newton (33)

Chapter Thirty-Two

Nila

I knew Jacob was right. We had to be careful before my thirst for blood and vengeance got us caught, especially with the cops on our backs. I couldn’t help it though. The lust for blood was at its all-time highest, and with Jacob here, the act was even more intimate, more important. But we had to be smart about things. We couldn’t risk what we had. There was no way we could be separated again. We wouldn’t survive without each other.

As the sunlight streamed in on Jacob’s naked form lying in my bed, I looked at him, examining all he had to offer. His muscular, toned chest on display with my brand proudly there. His firm, hard cock rising. His hands that held me gently but gave me punishment when I deserved it, when I craved it. The scars he bore from his father’s hands. I loved every part of Jacob. Imperfections and all. That’s why I knew exactly what we had to do.

Dressed in a dark Black Halo sheath dress and Louboutin pumps, I picked up my briefcase from the chair in the corner. With a kiss on Jacob’s forehead, I headed for my library to grab a patient file before I left for the office.

Once at the office, I pulled out the patient file with contents full of secrets and lies. I knew if I were going to put my plan into action, this would be the last patient killed at my hands.

William T. Lee.

The man was a mogul. He made his living off shipping exports and imports, but what no one knew was some of those imports were girls from China. Girls who dreamed of a better life and instead found themselves auctioned off and sold to the highest bidder. The men would rape, torture, and kill them. And for the last few months, I had been hearing Lee’s tales that sounded like a horror story once a week. He trusted me because he knew I was bound to listen, but he didn’t know I could’ve dropped his name with the cops at any moment but chose not to because I was biding my time, waiting to strike. But his next shipment was coming in this weekend.

If Jacob and I were going to go on the run, I wanted to take out one last monster. And the little bit of Alana that remained in me, well, she wanted to do something good. As long as my plan worked out, I could nail Lee for his crimes, kill him, and fake my own death, leading police to believe it had been Lee all along.

“Baby, what are you doing here?”

Looking up, I saw Jacob in front of my desk looking down at me. I was so lost in thought, I didn’t notice anyone coming in. I was really losing my touch.

“I couldn’t sleep. I’m sorry if I worried you.”

“Of course I was worried! I woke up and you were gone.”

“I’m sorry.”

Walking around my desk, I waited until Jacob was seated before making myself at home in his lap, my arm wrapped around him.

“What’s on your mind?”

“We need to disappear. The cops are keeping tabs on me and now they know I’m Alana. We can’t stay here. I can’t lose you.”

“You’ll never lose me.”

“You can’t say that for sure. If we get caught, I’d have to live without you, and I’ve already done enough of that for one lifetime.”

“So what’s the plan?”

“William Lee.”

“Hmm?”

“He’s a client of mine. A sick son of a bitch. He sells girls for money and has a new shipment coming in this weekend. If we want to leave and have a clean getaway, we set him up to take the fall for my murder and the trafficking of the girls.”

“You may be onto something here.”

Arching a brow at Jacob, I replied, “Well, I’m not just a pretty face.” With a short laugh, I relaxed into his body, letting my worries disappear for a few minutes.

William was scheduled the next day, so I called to tell him I had an emergency and offered him a late appointment that evening. Agreeable as usual, William’s appointment was set. Telling my assistant to take off for the night because I had no other appointments on the books for the day, Jacob and I waited in silence. When the elevator dinged to let me know William was there, Jacob slipped silently into the closet, ready to strike when I needed him to.

Patient Notes: William Lee. Dangerous, calculated, and respected. He uses his money and connections to stay out of trouble. He believes he has more power than he does, but he uses it effectively.

“Hello, William. Thank you for making it on such short notice,” I greeted him as he came in, already beginning to unbutton his suit jacket to get more comfortable.

“No problem, Nila, dear.”

In his fifties, William had a head full of gray hair, a shorter stature than most men, and a paunchy stomach. Dressed in an expensive suit, the smell of money practically wafted off him.

“I had a last-minute conference come up so I was happy you were able to come in today. How have you been?” I asked William.

“Good, good.”

“Wonderful to hear. Any problems lately? No side effects from the new medication?”

“No. Things are well. Doctor gave me a full checkup the other day and said I’m in tip-top shape.”

“So what’s on your mind this evening, William?”

“Well, to tell you the truth, I have an important shipment coming in this week.”

“Oh?”

“Yes, yes. One of my special shipments,” he replied with a wink.

“Ah, I see. And tell me, William, do you derive pleasure from this?”

“Oh, honey, if I’m making money, that’s all the pleasure I need from life.”

“Hmm …”

“Look, I didn’t have anything but the clothes on my back when I was growing up. I came from nothing and rose to the top on my own. If I have to blur the lines between good and bad sometimes, I’m fine with that. At least I know I’ll have food in my stomach and a place to sleep at night.”

“I see. We never really discussed your circumstances growing up. Care to share with me, William?”

“What’s there to share? My mother was an addict who threw away our rent money on drugs, forcing us to live on the streets. I escaped her claws before she started selling me like she was selling herself. The crack whore died on the streets, a needle in her vein. My father was an idiot for marrying her. Met her in China on one of his tours. Navy man, you know. Brought her back to the States and that was how she repaid him. By becoming a junkie. When he died, it got worse. She didn’t care about anyone but herself.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, William. What about siblings?”

“She got knocked up a few times. Gave the babies away.”

“Did you ever look to find them once you were older?”

“No. Why would I? They were just a bunch of bastards.”

As William got out his last words, Jacob stealthily snuck from the closet, coming up behind him. Placing his forearm around William’s neck, Jacob put him in a chokehold and William lost the last bit of his breath and his eyes closed.

“That should hold him for a while,” Jacob’s gravelly voice cut into the silence.

We knew better than to use any drugs with William. We didn’t want anything suspicious coming up on an autopsy. As Jacob bound William’s hands behind his back with a cloth, I ran downstairs to pull the car up to the elevator. Once Jacob and William were downstairs and William was safely put into the car without anyone seeing, we were on our way to the warehouse.

“Are you ready for this, Alana?”

“I’m ready for anything that lets me keep you.”

With hands held tight, Jacob drove us into the night as I prepared for what was to come.

Jacob and I watched from the other room as William screamed at someone who wasn’t even there.

“Whore! Whore! Stay away, you fucking whore!” came from the sound system.

We had a perfect view of William through the two-way mirror. Two days had passed since we’d taken him, and in that time we starved him, kept him awake, and made sure he was cold. Both Jacob and I were sure William was at his breaking point. Soon, he would give us the answers we so desperately wanted. In the meantime, Jacob hacked into William’s accounts and managed to steal money from him. Half of his riches were now ours.

“You ready, baby?”

“Of course, lover.”

Walking into the room where William was being kept, Jacob pulled his chair over to the metal wash tub. William’s screams echoed off the walls as he begged for his life, for Jacob not to kill him. Jacob, on the other hand, was wrapping a cloth around William’s mouth and leaning his chair back.

“Tell us what we want to know.”

Pouring water over the cloth on his mouth, William gasped for air, head shaking side to side.

“Tell us what we fucking want to know!”

Once again, William shook his head, declining to answer.

“Please, please. Mother, let me go. Let me go.”

Ah, so that’s who he had been referring to as a whore earlier. His mother, the prostitute.

With a push over the edge of the tub by Jacob’s hand, William went falling into the ice-cold water, chair and all.

“Help me. Help me. Please help me.”

“Tell us what we want to know and you can be free,” I whispered over his flailing body.

“Anything. Anything,” he replied, voice quaking as he shook from the cold.

“When is the shipment coming?”

“F-Fri-Friday.”

“Where?”

“The docks!”

“Time?”

“Midnight.”

We now had the knowledge we needed. The girls would be arriving in hours, which didn’t leave us much time to prepare. We had so much to do, and the world was suffocating us. If we wanted to be able to pull this off, we really needed to make sure everything was in order.

Tugging William from the tub of ice water, I took my blade and cut his clothes from him, leaving a sad sack of pathetic old man wilted in front of me. It wouldn’t do to have him die from hypothermia before he could kill himself once the guilt became too much for him to live with. Throwing a plush blanket over his lap, I watched as such a proud man cowered like a sniveling punk. He was nothing. He was no one. A fuckup who thought he went on to do great things, but instead he ruined lives, one right after another, turning those girls into his mother.

Staring down at him, I cut the blindfold from his face, leaving him to see exactly who was behind his kidnapping.

“You!”

“Give me your confession, William.”

“W-What?” he questioned, body still shaking from the cold.

“I want to hear your confession.”

“You know it all.”

“Do I?”

“Yes. Yes. Everything.”

“I don’t think so.” I held my blade up for him. “Would you like to meet my friend here?”

“No … No.”

“Then tell the truth. Give me your confession.”

Shaking his head back and forth, he refused to admit his own truth.

“Jacob, grab William a clean shirt and a comb, please.”

I couldn’t help getting a look at his ass as he walked off to do my bidding. That man sure did have a fine one, and it was all mine. I intended to make sure it stayed that way. In order to do so, I needed William’s confession, and this was the first I would make sure to get on tape.

“William, if you want to get out of here alive, you need to tell me why you started trafficking the girls.”

“Then you’ll let me leave?”

“Of course, darling.”

“Okay.”

“Glad to see you’ve come to your senses.”

As Jacob returned to the room, I grabbed the shirt from his hand and pointed to the camera in the corner so he would get things ready. Making William somewhat presentable turned out to be a job with the bags under his eyes, but it gave to the story that he could no longer live with the guilt.

“Okay now, William, tell me.”

“My name is William Lee. I was born Willy Martin, the son of a Naval officer and a Chinese immigrant. My father died, leaving my mother to raise me, but she was too hooked on drugs to do it. When I was eleven, she tried to sell me to her drug dealer and pimp, but I got away, running as fast as I could. I lived on the streets a while, taking handouts until I was thirteen and a man found me, took me in, raised me up, and taught me everything I know.

“Gave me his company when he died, even. But I c-couldn’t get rid of my anger at my ma, at what she tried to do to me, so I started importing and trafficking little Ch-Chinese girls like Ma. Selling them off to the highest bidder and profiting from their rapes and d-deaths.”

Perfect. Just what Jacob and I needed in order to set things in motion. William was still so out of it, he didn’t even realize he was being recorded. Head hung low, eyes closed, he looked one step away from death. How I longed to stick a dagger in his heart or gouge out his eyes, but alas, there would be plenty of victims to choose from in the future. This man was our way out.

As Jacob stopped filming, I blindfolded William once more to leave him in the dark.

“Think of all those girls, William. Think about what you’ve done.”

With that, I swept out of the room, parting ways with Jacob so we could get everything ready.

Friday, I would spill my own blood and die, but for now, I had things to do.
