Baby for My Brother's Friend by Nikki Chase (33)

Epilogue

Adam—Two Years Later

It’s crazy how much things can change in just a few short years.

Sure, it’s taken us longer than most couples to finally figure out that we’re meant to be together. But all those ups and downs only show me how much Katie and William mean to me.

Even though she’s a submissive angel in bed, Katie doesn’t let me get away with anything. Thanks to her, I’ve become a better dad and if I may say so myself, a better man.

The first time I changed William’s diaper, I grimaced in disgust, and Katie glared at me. I realized William noticed my reaction and was shrinking in self-consciousness.

So after that little incident, I tried to be a more positive person around William. It spread to other parts of my life, and apparently I’m now a more pleasant boss to work with, according to some people in the office.

It’s hard to find the balance in being positive and lax as a dad, though.

For example, we finally took William out trick-or-treating for the first time when he was three.

There was one old lady who lived on her own and gave out cheap candy. William took one look at the candy and gave it back to her, saying, “No, thank you.”

I couldn’t help but laugh, until—again—Katie glared at me and corrected William, teaching him to politely take the candy, except he was having none of it and kept trying to give the candy away.

I didn’t know whether to feel bad for the poor, old lady or laugh my ass off.

At the same time, Katie’s learned that sometimes I won’t do things the exact same way she does them. As long as the job gets done, she’s happy. And you know what they say about a happy wife.

I’m not saying she’s my wife, by the way.

But she will be. I have a ring in my pocket that will be wrapped around her finger before the end of the night.

Seriously, I’m that confident. I have the best wingman in the world.

I’d been trying to think up ways to pop the question and finally had a lightbulb moment when I saw William’s latest drawing from pre-school. Luckily, I was the one who picked him up that day, so I could hide it from Katie.

I pat my jeans pocket to make sure the little velvet box is still there. Yup.

I hold up William’s drawing and smile to myself. Yeah, this is good. This is going to work.

On the white piece of paper, William has drawn three stick figures—Katie, William, and me. He’s also labeled them “Mom,” “Me,” and “Dad.”

Nobody taught him to call me “Dad,” by the way. He just asked Katie and me one day if I was his dad, we said yes, and he’s been calling me “Dad” ever since. I think that happened last year.

But this drawing is something else.

I grin as I stare at it. The only thing that would make it better is if William were to draw my apartment, too, because I’ve been asking Katie to move in, to no avail.

Suddenly, William screams, “Mom’s home!”

He’s been stationed at the window, watching the driveway for Mom’s car to pull up. That’s his cue to start the mission.

“Okay, buddy. It’s your time to shine,” I say, getting up to the window and peeking out at Katie, who’s stepping out of her car.

I hand William his drawing, and he solemnly takes it. Maybe I’m imagining things, but I think he knows how serious this is.

“You’d better be extra cute tonight,” I say.

William tilts his head, making his dark curls tumble over his forehead, partially covering his eyes. I laugh as he tries to brush them away with his tiny fingers.

“Don’t worry, little man. You’ve got that cute thing covered,” I say. “Now, do you remember what to do?”

“Give Mommy the drawing,” he says.

“Exactly. And?”

“And be cute.”

“That’s right.” I grin.

When Katie opens the door, William immediately runs toward her.

What a trooper. He takes his job seriously. No doubt my son’s a precocious go-getter meant for greatness.

“Hey, William. How was your day?” Katie asks, smiling. She’s been teaching William to mind his manners.

“Good,” he says. “How was your day, Mommy?”

“I had a great day. Thank you for asking, William.” Katie’s just had lunch with her friend, Daisy, so she’s not just being polite; she’s actually in a good mood.

She’s also wearing a floral dress that makes her look so hot I want to strip her down and tie her up on the bed. But that’ll have to wait.

“William has something to show you.” I join them in the hallway, by the door.

“Ooh . . . I like the sound of that.” Katie grins as William hands her the piece of paper.

As Katie takes a close look at William’s drawing, she covers her mouth with her hand. “Oh, my god, William, this is beautiful.”

When Katie twists toward William, her eyes are already filling up with water. I don’t like seeing Katie cry, but this is a good thing, right? The perfect set-up for a proposal.

Katie shifts her gaze to me when she notices me kneeling on the carpet.

“What . . .” Katie doesn’t finish her sentence. Her jaw drops, and she just watches while I pull out a small, dark box from my pocket.

“Will you marry me, Katie?” I ask as I open the box to reveal a shiny ring with a clear stone.

I have no idea about jewelry and gemstones, so Daisy’s kindly helped me to pick out this ring.

It wasn’t a coincidence Katie had lunch with her today. I needed some alone time with William for briefing and training purposes.

Katie doesn’t say anything, but tears stream down her face as she stares at the ring.

It definitely looks like she’s happy I’m proposing, but she hasn’t said anything yet and I really need to hear it . . .

“Is that a yes?” I ask, my heart pounding.

Katie quickly nods and says, “Yes. Yes, of course.”

“You’ll marry me?”

“Of course, I’ll marry you.”

Joy spreads across my chest, filling me with boundless energy. I feel like I could climb to the top of a mountain and tell the world how happy I am.

William starts squealing. He’s jumping up and down, circling the two of us.

Honestly, a part of me wants to join him, but my work here isn’t done yet.

“Give me your hand, kitten,” I say.

As if in a daze, Katie silently rests her delicate hand on mine and lets me put the ring on her finger.

This is it. She’s really mine now, finally. And everyone will know she’s mine.

“I love you, kitten,” I say as I get up and pull her into my arms.

“I love you, too,” she says.

William tugs on my hand, so I grab him and lift him up so he can join our little group hug.

Everything I’ve ever wanted and needed is here. I have everything. Only one thing is left . . .

“Would you move in with me, too?” I ask the same question I’ve been asking Katie for at least one year now. I add, in a low voice, “I’ve already put a fence around the swimming pool.”

Katie giggles. “Okay, Adam. I’ll move in with you, too.”

I smile to myself as I wrap my arms around my little family—my lovely wife to-be and my healthy first-born son.

I never thought a visit to a kinky, secret sex club would somehow turn me into a wholesome family man, but sometimes life gives you surprises.

William’s the biggest, best surprise I’ve ever gotten in my life, and I don’t think anything’s going to compare to the joy he’s brought into my life.

And Katie . . . I still don’t know what came over me that night, when I started pursuing this strange, beautiful girl at the club. But I’m glad I did. And I’m glad I never gave up.

We’ve been through a lot. It hasn’t always been easy or enjoyable.

But from where I’m standing right now, with my little family in my arms? I can safely, confidently say this is worth all the trouble. There’s no doubt in my mind.
