Pretend I’m Yours by Bates, Aiden (24)

Epilogue

Saul

Kyler looked resplendent in black.

He took his time walking down the aisle, as if to give us time to see him in his glory. He wore a fitted black suit, with tassels in front and an exceptional golden bow tie that winked when the light hit it a certain way. His hair was even more lustrous than usual, and he had decided to plait it into three neat cornrows. He looked devilishly handsome. More than once I had to stop myself from staring.

He walked down the aisle with Jess.

The wedding was incredibly intimate, attended only by our family and friends. Kyler had made the point that it was more for us than for anyone else, so we should only invite the people who understood what we had been through. Even with a guest list of less than twenty, we still ended up with an impressive number of celebrities, courtesy of my dad and my mother. While planning the wedding, I had joked to dad that Zachary Quinto was both our celebrity free pass, and he had asked ‘his good friend Zach’ if he would officiate the wedding.

Kyler came down the aisle with our daughter Kadia Grace in his hands. Everyone ooh’ed and aah’d as they slowly made their way down. I waited with bated breath over at the altar, hardly believing that this was finally happening. I had never really thought about what my wedding would be like, but it was better than any I could have imagined. We had rented out a private island off the coast of the Pacific. The decoration had been minimalist, as the beach was already stunning.

After what must have been an hour, Kyler finally made it to the altar. He handed Kadia Grace over to my mother, who was beaming happily in the front. Then he turned those eyes to me, and I felt like I was seeing him for the first time.

It still surprised me how new it all felt with Kyler. This would be our second year together, but I still got that rush when our eyes met.

Kyler said his vows first. He took both my hands in his and recited it from memory.

“Saul,” he said. “I knew I loved you the moment I first saw you. I felt it then and I still feel a rush when I see you, a peace and comfort I have never experienced with anyone else. I know we have not had the most straightforward journey, but I wouldn’t trade our time together for anything. I have come to know you as a person, as a friend, as a lover, and now as a father. I am confident in saying I have never known a finer man. I am lucky to call myself your husband. I am luckier to be yours. If every day we have is exactly like the ones we’ve had together, then I will consider my life well lived. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”

It was beautiful, and it received a rousing round of applause.

“Kyler,” I said when he was done. “The greatest achievement of my life remains convincing you to marry me. I am proudest of the fact that I allowed myself to love you, because it is the most profound experience of my life. My path to you was not always clear, I’ll admit. But we found each other in the end, and that is all that matters. I want you to know that what we have is priceless, and that nothing in the world, no amount of money, can ever equate what we share. I love you more every day I spend with you. I look forward to growing old with you, and telling our children the story of our love.”

‘You may kiss the groom’ was met with another cheer, particularly when Kyler decided to dip me as he kissed me.

Just like that, we were married. Again.

We had our reception on the other side of the island. Dad had managed to pull some more strings to get Coldplay to perform, and as they serenaded us with their classics, I held Kyler close to me and felt that familiar sense of affection and contentment steal over me.

“You look beautiful, Mr. McCormick,” I whispered to him.

“You don’t look too bad yourself, Mr. McCormick,” he replied.

Just beyond us, the sun began to set, and the evening breeze washed playfully over our faces. It had been a perfect day in every sense of the word. I felt, for the first time in my life, like I was on the cusp of happily ever after.
