I closed my office door and leaned back against it.  I’d just seen Lily and Lucien hug each other, followed by Lily leaning into Lucien to kiss him.  Okay, she kissed him on his cheek and they were laughing.  What the hell was going on?

Control, that’s what I needed.  I knew deep down that nothing was going on between them, but I couldn’t seem to stop the jealousy that flared up and take me completely off guard.

She knocked on my door and tried to open it.  I stepped away and in she walked.

“Why did you walk the last few floors?”

She looked close to tears as she pulled away from me.  She walked over and sat on the sofa.  “I can’t keep doing this.” She wiped a tear away.  “I can’t keep explaining myself to you every time you get the wrong idea.  I’m your girlfriend and he’s your brother.  You need to trust us.  Lucien needs a friend and I want to be that friend for him, but I can’t handle you questioning me every time I see him.  You need to trust me like I do you.”

Instead of going back to my desk, I leaned against the wall and listened.

“David, I’m not interested in going back to you.”

Silence, while he obviously talked.

“I’ll tell you this for the last time, I’m not going back to you. I’m happier now than I’ve ever been, so I would appreciate it if you would leave me alone.  Have a good life, because I intend to – with Michael.”

She hung up the phone.

I couldn’t believe what I’d overheard.  It thrilled me to know that she planned to spend the rest of her life with me, regardless of my caveman tendencies.

“You heard.”

I jumped.  She caught me.  “Yeah.”

“He wanted me back.  I don’t think things are working out with ‘Lucy’.  I feel sad for him really, but I’m more happy with you than what I remember being with him.”

“Good.”  I cleared my throat. “I was on my way out to ask you out to dinner in a couple of days.”

“You were?”

“Yeah, I thought we could go out when we didn’t have to get up for work the following day.”

“You have a one-track mind.  As you’re the boss, do you think we could play hooky for the rest of the day?”

“That can be arranged.  What’s the hurry?”

“I can’t concentrate on work. I’m too busy thinking about you naked.  On your bed.  At my mercy.”

“Christ, let me get my briefcase.”

I walked over to my desk, shoved whatever was on my desk into the briefcase, grabbed Lily’s hand and dragged her out of the offices and into my car before she could catch her breath.
