The Magic Cupcake by River Laurent (46)

Chapter Fifty-Six

Lauren

I sigh with contentment as the masseuse wraps me in a towel and leaves us alone in the dimly lit room of the hotel spa, soothing music playing and scented candles burning. I look over at Jackson and he’s smiling at me dopily.

“That was so good,” I whisper.

He nods and stretches his arm out towards me.

I take his hand and smile to myself, thinking about our gorgeous lazy day. From our amazing breakfast with a view, making love and watching a horror movies, then finally an hour long massage to end the perfect day.

“It’s been amazing,” I whisper to him again. “Thank you for everything.”

“My pleasure,” he tells me. “But it’s not over yet,” he adds, winking and slowly pulling himself to his feet.

I ease myself up too, my body feeling supple and refreshed. “What do you mean?”

“You’ll see,” he says mysteriously. Once we’re dressed though, he tells me that it’s nothing special. “I just booked us a table for dinner, that’s all.”

He leads me through the hotel lobby to one of the restaurants and I gasp when we get inside. It’s like a tropical paradise with a pool in the middle and a band playing on a gondola-style boat.

“Never been here before?”

I shake my head, looking around, taking it all in. “This place is cool.”

Then, across the hazily-lit room, I notice a blonde bob… a head of long black curls… a brightly colored cap that can only belong to one person. I look up at Jackson in surprise but he’s smiling.

“Shall we go and join them?” he says, his eyes full of love.

“Did you arrange this?” I ask him. Of course, he did. “You’re something else,” I say, shaking my head in amazement.

As we head towards them, I realize Pam is there too. Matthew as well, sitting next to Nina. And a tall dark gentleman in a suit next to Andrea who must be Ricardo!

“Hi everyone!” I yell as we reach the table.

“Hey lovebirds,” Andrea grins, standing up to greet us.

Everyone else follows suit and I’m grinning from ear to ear. Now this really is the perfect end to a perfect weekend.

“So, how come you’re not in Tahoe, Jackson?” Pam asks.

“Work commitments,” he grunts.

I punch his arm. “Are you referring to me as work?”

He laughs, catches my hand, puts his arm around my waist possessively. It makes me wonder if this is for Mathews benefit. I should tell him I’m not Mathew’s type, or maybe I won’t. It’s wonderful to be so wanted.

He addresses Pam, “Have you heard from them?”

“Nope,” she says, rolling her eyes. “I don’t think I want to know what they’re up to, to be honest.”

“I won’t show you the photos Joe sent me then,” Jackson says, smirking.

Pam’s eyes grow wide.

He laughs and gets out his phone. “Relax. It’s nothing to worry about.” He shows us all a picture of a group of guys all dressed up in bear suits with their skis and poles, on top of a mountain.

“Oh, my God,” she cries out laughing, “What the heck!”

“Aw, I bet you wish you were there,” I say to him.

“Are you kidding? I’ve had the best weekend with you.” He smiles at me, his green eyes twinkling.

I smile back so hard, it feels as if my face could break into two.

“You guys make me want to throw up!” Andrea cackles.

I give her a look.

“Andrea, have you not got a single romantic bone in your body?” Ricardo asks in a sexy Italian accent, but his dark eyes are smiling.

“I think you have enough romance in you for the both of us!” Andrea retorts.

I wonder what she means. She certainly hasn’t told us about any of his romantic gestures and I make a note to grill her about it later.

We take our seats in the two empty spaces next to Nina and Matthew. I’m a little apprehensive to see how Jackson and Matthew will interact but to my relief, they shake each other’s hands affably.

“How’s it going, man?” Jackson says, grinning.

“Great, thanks.” He’s beaming and so is Nina sitting next to him.

I’m happy to see that my match-making skills seem to be working well so far!

“Thanks so much for taking Draco out today,” I tell Nina. “And for all the photos! You took him for a long walk. I bet he’s exhausted!”

“He wolfed down his food and then he’s been sleeping on the sofa all afternoon,” she reports.

“After he almost got his hands on my lunch!” Matthew chimes in. “He’s a gorgeous dog you’ve got there. If a little greedy.”

I’m laughing. “Oh god, I know. He’ll eat anything that one! He has a particular penchant for pizzas!”

“And cupcakes,” Jackson adds, grinning.

Nina bursts out laughing and Matthew glances at her for an explanation.

I give her a warning look. I’d rather I build up my reputation at work a little more before he finds out anything about the love potion saga. “How’s the project going?” I ask Danny quickly.

“Wonderfully, thanks,” he says, adjusting his cap. “Although I was a little late going in today… distractions…” he adds with a knowing look.

“Handyman Darren?” I ask.

His face tells me I’m right. I smile back happily.
