Down South (Southern Hospitality Book 1) by C.M. Steele (6)

Maggie

I played one word in my head after he dropped me off. “Mine.” His conviction shook my bones. My parents questioned me the second I walked through the door with my dreamy eyes. There was no way I was going to tell them about my suggestion to Maxwell or that he had kissed me and if he had continued, I would have laid out in the moonlight and let him take me. I complained that I was tired, waved goodnight, and rushed to my bedroom. The door was barely closed when I pressed my back against it like it was the truck. Closing my eyes, I relived that moment over.

My body pulsed from the memory of his thick, hardened cock on my belly. The feel of it brushing the bottom of my breasts almost had me pushing them together and rubbing. I may be a virgin, but I saw more than my fair share of classmates under the bleachers after school. I always rushed away, but now I pictured myself under the steel frames as Maxwell touched me with those strong hands, caressing my hard nipples. Naturally, I parted my thighs and rubbed my hand over the seam of my shorts right over my pussy lips. A moan broke free from my lips and I freaked out that I could be heard, so I jumped in the shower, then headed to bed so tomorrow could come faster.

Maxwell stopped by the house right before I had to go to the ranch. I was hoping I would see him sooner. It was like what happened last night was gone. His facial expression was hard to read. The instant perusal of my body sent shivers of delight through me, but a look of disapproval ruled his face. I had on another outfit like yesterday. It was hot, and even though the Sanchez Ranch had central air, I was going to be cooking.

He walked past my father and stopped inches from my face. He leaned down and I thought he was going to kiss me, but instead he whispered in my ear so that only I could hear, “I’m going to drop you off today. Go change, right now or you won’t be going to work. I will take you back to the hotel and fuck my kid into you.” My face couldn’t get any redder than my father’s. He couldn’t hear us, but he read my expression and knew immediately that it wasn’t appropriate. “What’s it going to be, Maggie?” he asked loud enough for my father to hear.

“I’ll go change,” I panted.

“Good girl,” he murmured against my ear, sending my pulse through the roof. His teeth nipped at my lobe before he straightened up.

“Maybe I shouldn’t change,” I muttered mindlessly.

“Don’t test me. I need to talk to your father. Go change or I’ll help you do it.”

“No, you won’t,” my dad chimed in. “Maggie, go and change already. You know I don’t like you going over there dressed like that anyway. You got away with it yesterday, but now I have a tag team here.”

“See, babe. Now please, get moving.” He looked like he was about to swat my ass but he second thought that plan since my dad was standing right there and tucked his hand into his pants pocket.

The moment I came downstairs, I saw him with a smile on his face before he pursed his lips, admiring me still. “Hey, don’t say, anything. It’s freaking nearly a hundred degrees, I’m not putting on a sweater.”

“All I was going to say is that you’re beautiful and I’m always going to be jealous of men looking at you.” My heart jumped at the always. I knew it was a figure of speech and once he left town the long-distance relationship would fade and I’d be stuck here living with a broken heart.

I plastered a smile on my face and gave my dad a kiss on his cheek before heading out of the house. My mother was in town with my brother doing some grocery shopping, so I sent her a text. She replied back with a couple of emojis. Since she learned to text, she always sends a reply with at least three emojis. I smiled and walked to the truck. “Wait up, babe,” Maxwell said, opening the door for me. My heart was breaking already. I had a choice to make. Could I let this continue until he leaves or should I save the heartache now?

“Maxwell, I appreciate the ride and all the things you’ve done for my parents and brother.”

“Don’t. Don’t do what I think you are. I’m not going to let you get away that easily.”

“I just need today to figure things out. Please can you accept that?”

“Figure what out?”

I paused, getting frustrated with his domineering attitude. If he didn’t think I noticed the new truck at the main house or how my parents were less stressed about the house and questioning me, he was way wrong. I saw it all. A long distance relationship wasn’t going to work, and no matter what he says, not being able to see each other is going to be terrible.

“Fine, I’ll give you tonight. Billy will pick you up, but I want you to text me when you get home, just so I know you’re safe. If that fucker comes around, though, I want to know.”

“Thank you, Maxwell. Hopefully, the jackass stays away from me, but if he doesn’t I’ll call you.” The trip to the ranch seemed to be the fastest one yet. I bit back the sting of tears that were blurring my vision.

“If you start crying, I’m not going anywhere.”

“I’m fine.” He took my face in his hands and pulled my head to his, kissing the emotions out of me. How was it possible to feel this way so soon? I needed to figure out if this is love.

“See you later, babe.” He watched me walk into the main house and then he drove away.

He kept his promise to stay away. Once the place was all cleaned up, I called Billy and he came. “You know, just because he wants you doesn’t mean you have to want him back. We can always call the cops and get him for stalking.”

“It’s not that,” I answered, looking out the passenger window and nibbling on my lip. “I want him more than I should. The thought of him leaving me and pretending that we can date from two different states a thousand miles apart is too much for me.”

My brother patted my leg. “Magpie, did he tell you that’s what he wants?”

“No, we haven’t really had much time together.”

“You should ask him what he expects. If it’s dating from a far, then you can decide if you are willing or you can tell him to ‘Go home, you damn Yankee.’” I cracked a smile. “See, you can do it,” he replied, giving my cheek a pinch. Billy always knew how to cheer me up, but this time it wasn’t something small; this was my heart at stake.

“Thanks,” I said as I hopped out of the truck. My parents were watching a movie together, so I waved goodnight and headed to my room.

I sent Maxwell a text. I’m home. Goodnight.

Goodnight, babe.

For the rest of the night, I laid in bed thinking about him, occasionally running my fingers over those words. No more texts. Somehow, I was hoping to get a couple more pings on my phone, but the night came and went without a sound.
