Loving Kyle: A standalone Military Romance by Kasey Millstead (22)

Chapter Twenty-Six – NOW

“Liv, there’s a call for you on line two.  A disgruntled customer by the name of John, who wants to speak with management,” Martha says, leaning back on her chair to peak into my cubicle.

“Put him through,” I reply, hitting send on the email I was finishing up.  “By the way, your hair looks good,” I say, noticing she’s had her usually waist-long hair trimmed to her shoulders.

“Thanks!”

I take the call from John, and manage to placate him with the promise of an apology letter and gift voucher for the inconvenience caused to him by the faulty product he purchased.  Then, I decide to do something I’ve been putting off all morning.  I click onto Google and type a few search words.  I find the phone number I need and make two appointments, one after the other, for this afternoon.  Then I phone Celia and ask if she can collect Matilda from afterschool care.  She assures me it’s no trouble.

“I’ll be right back,” I say to Martha, as I stand and walk down the corridor to Meg’s office.  She works with the marketing team on the other side of the floor to where my cubicle is.  I spot her dark hair at her desk and quicken my pace.

“Hey,” I say as I approach.

“Oh, hey, Liv. How are you?”

“Good. I’m great.  I need a favor,” I state.

“Oh yeah?  You look a little panicky.  Is everything all right?”

I nod.  “Mmm-hmm, sure,” I mumble.  “I need you to go with me after work.  I’ve already made our appointments.”

“Go with you where?”

“To a psychic,” I tell her.

“Uh…okay.  Why?”

“Because I need to… I had a dream last night and I need to know what it meant.”

She shrugs.  “Sure, why not.  Maybe she’ll give me some insight on my small dicked man,” she says through a giggle.

I can’t help but laugh.  “Good.  I’ll see you after work.”

The rest of my day passes quickly and by the time I’m shutting down my computer and meeting Meg by the elevator, the butterflies in my stomach are enough to make me nauseous.

“How long are the appointments?” Meg asks on the drive to the psychic’s house.  We take my car, since Meg walked to work this morning.

“I just did two thirty minute ones, but if you want more time, I’m sure she could fit you in. She said her evening was free.”

“No, thirty minutes sounds good.”

We arrive and park right out the front.  “This is the right address,” I murmur, looking from my GPS to the numbers by the front door.  It just looks like any of the other residential houses in the street – brick, not old, but not new either, tidy yard, pretty flowers, spacious porch.

“Let’s go knock then,” Meg says, climbing out of the passenger seat.  I inhale a breath of courage before exhaling heavily and following her up the path.

Before we can ring the doorbell, the wooden door swings open to reveal a lady who looks to be in her mid-forties.  Her brown hair is sprinkled with greys and is pulled back from her face.  She’s on the shorter side of average and a little plump.  Her smile is large and her brown eyes look kind.

“Liv and Meg,” she states.  “Lovely to meet you both.  I’m Dana.  Come on in.”

We follow her inside the house and into the living room.  It smells like vanilla and baked apples from the scented candles she has burning.

“Who wants to go first?” she asks, still smiling.  She seems very friendly and I feel at ease.

“Liv can,” Meg offers.  “You made the appointments.”

“Meg, you can sit down in here and relax.  There are some magazines and books there, help yourself.  You can make a coffee or tea,” she says, gesturing to a station set up in the corner.

“Thanks, Dana.”

“Follow me, Liv.”

We move into the next room that looks about the size of Matilda’s bedroom.  In other words, average.  There’s a large window behind a long desk and two chairs on one side, one on the other.

“Take a seat,” she says before rounding the table and taking the single chair.

The table is covered in a piece of black velvet, and on top are a stack of tarot cards, an old fashioned sand timer, a cell phone, and two crystals.

“Okay, let’s get started, Liv,” she says, shuffling the cards.  “I can record the session and email it to you, or if you prefer, you can record on your own cell.  We’ll have a look at the cards first, then we can move onto mediumship or I can answer any questions you need answering.”

“Sounds great.  I’m happy to record.”  I pull out my phone, open the recording app, and set it on the table.

“Good.  Now, shuffle the cards until you feel you’re ready and then cut them in half.”

I do as I’m told, and choose six cards when she instructs me to do so.  One by one she flips them over as she explains their meaning.

The Star.  This card represents hope and faith.  You suffered the loss of your partner so this card is indicating you need to take heart, because good fortune is coming.”  She turns the next card over.  “Ah, The Tower.  You’re probably looking for an easy solution to a difficult problem.  We need to remember in life, turmoil and upheaval often bring about positive change – just not in the ways we imagined.  Seize the opportunities presented to you.”  Her long, red nails move to the next card, turning it over and placing it on the velvet cloth.  “The Wheel of Fortune.  You’ll experience a run of good luck or good fortune.  Go with the flow.  Enjoy it.”  She moves to the fourth card. “Strength.  You need to be positive, look inside yourself to see your true self-worth and follow your heart.  This card also correlated with The Tower.  Seizing the opportunities presented, such as with the man you’ve recently let into your life, after fighting your attraction to him for so long,” she says knowingly, before moving to the next card.  “Judgement.  If you continue to allow fear to stop you from taking a chance, then you will lose out.  Don’t ignore the changes coming your way, because they could change your life for the better.”  She flips the final card. “The Sun. This is your time.  Celebrate life and love.  Bask in the happiness and success that will surround you. Enjoy your confidence and the feeling of vitality.”

“Wow,” I gape, shaking my head slightly.  “That was amazing.  Very relatable and accurate.”

“I feel you have some questions, and we still have a few minutes left,” she prompts.

“I do.  I had a dream last night and I just wanted some insight on it,” I say as I tell her about my dream with Brant and what he said to me about moving on with Kyle.

“When a soul leaves the earth, it no longer carries the inhibitions and judgements that we have in our present lives.  Your partner… I’m getting a B name, like Brent or Brad?” she says, closing her eyes to concentrate.  She shakes her wrists and the bangles there jingle softly.

“Brant,” I murmur.

“Brant passed quickly from the impact of a collision. Car crash,” she continues.  Tears prick my eyes and run over, tumbling down my cheeks unchecked.  “He sensed your hesitation at moving on and came to you in a dream, when your mind is at its most open state.  I feel it was his way of telling you two things.  One, that he really is happy for you and wanting you to move on, to find love again, and to live a beautiful life.  And two, to let you know that he’s still around, to reassure you that he’s there in spirit for you and for his daughter.”  She opens her eyes and looks at me across the table.  “It’s not uncommon for spirits to contact us in a dream.”

“So it wasn’t just my mind manifesting a scenario to reassure myself that moving on is okay?”

“No, it wasn’t.  It was all Brant.  You loved him.  But the love you feel for the man in your life right now – a K name.  Kye?”

“Kyle.”

“The love and connection you feel with Kyle is completely different, an entirely deeper level of affection.  I feel you met and fell in love with Brant so your daughter could be born.  But, Kyle is the mate to your soul.  I’m almost confident to say you and Kyle were loves in a past life,” she murmurs.

“Does that mean I’ll never have children with Kyle?”

“Oh, gosh no.  That just means your daughter was destined to be born of you and Brant.  I see three more babies for you in the future.  They’re waiting if you want them.”

“Three?” I gasp.

She nods, certain.

“Kyle is a good man.  A hero.  He’s a soldier?”

“Yes.  He was.  He’s out of the Army now.”

“He’s a born protector, and the bond he has with your daughter is incredibly special.”

“It is.  So very special.”

“They’re kindred spirits, those two.” She chuckles lightheartedly.

The last few grains of sand in the timer sprinkle through, signaling the end of my session.  Dana hits stop on the recording and I stand to give her a hug of thanks.

“Follow your heart, Liv,” she whispers in my ear.  “You’ve been ignoring it for far too long.”

I walk out into the living room and wait for Meg while she has her session.  The thirty minutes goes quickly and before I know it, we’re in my car and driving away from Dana’s home.

“So, what did you think?” I ask her.

“She was good!  I really liked her.  She said she sees a career change in the future for me, which sounds good, because my boss is an ass.”

“What did she say about your guy?”

“She sees me with someone else. A guy starting with C, so it’s definitely not Mike, but she also encouraged me to enjoy it while it lasts.  That it’s a learning experience for me.”

“Awesome. Well that’s all good news.”

“What about you?”

I fill her in on my session and she nods her head emphatically.  “I’ve been telling you that all along!”

“I know, I know.  I think I’m finally ready to just give my all, you know?  No holding back.  Just dive right in and take it as it comes.  But carefully, because of Matilda.”

“Of course.”

I drop Meg home and then drive the short distance to my place.  Kyle’s truck is in the drive and a smile stretches across my lips.  I already know the psychic visit will be mine and Meg’s secret, but that doesn’t mean I can’t heed her advice and go forth, giving Kyle my all.  As I climb out of my car and walk up the path, I can’t help but acknowledge the spring in my step.

My great day just got a whole lot greater.
