A Drackon Christmas by Maia Starr (2)

Chapter 2

Captain Gavonn Viox

I still thought about that day, every single day since it happened. I could still see her face, her strawberry-red hair, and her beautiful brown eyes. I could still taste the way her lips tasted. It was something that haunted me, but she was gone, and I had to move on. I didn't even know if she was alive.

“Captain, you are wanted on the tower,” a warrior said interrupting my thoughts.

“Thank you, warrior; you can tell them that I will be on my way,” I said. He nodded his head. I entered a report into my programming. When I was done, I moved out onto the veranda. I shifted. My silver wings folded out from behind me and my hard dragon scales appeared across my chest.

I ran and jumped off the ledge of the building and flew into the air. The tower was half a mile away, beyond the king’s castle. I flapped my wings in order to get more height and flew on the air currents. As I was flying, I was thinking.

Two years before, I had been on Earth for a mission. It was then that I was matched through the register system with a human female named Noelle. She was my perfect match. We spent a week together on Earth before I had to leave back to Mooreah. It was the best week of my life. But I wasn't too worried about not seeing her again because she was scheduled to go on a ship to Sala a month later. I would be joining her on Sala where we would be married, and then I would bring her home to Mooreah to live as my wife. It had all been planned out, and we were very happy. But then something terrible happened. After her ship had arrived on Sala, it was attacked. Not only was it attacked, but it started a six-month long battle with our enemy, which we eventually defeated.

It was such a swift and surprise attack that we lost all contact with the humans that were on Sala. We did not know which ones had been evacuated and which ones had perished. By the time the six-month battle was over, all records were lost. The registry system stopped and closed for an entire year. It had only recently been reopened in the last couple of months on Earth. It was a battle that everyone was still trying to recuperate from, including the marriage system that we had with Earth.

I tried for a year to find any information that I could on what happened to Noelle. I never found her on Sala, not even among the human casualties. I could never find a record of her on Earth, and I had not been allowed to go to Earth; no Drackon was after the battle with an enemy. The Earthlings did not want the enemy to invade Earth based on the fact that we were there, so our Drackon were forced to leave. It was only recently that Drackon where once again visiting Earth and having meetings with the Earth leaders. But now it was too late. I thought that it would never happen, that Earth would open its arms to us again. So I moved on, as painful as it was. I gave into my father's wishes to marry a Drackon female here on Mooreah. She was the daughter of a high-ranking leader, and it only boosted my own career making me go from commander to captain.

My wife Samara was pleasant at first, but I did not have a passionate love for her as I did with Noelle. I only knew her for a couple of days before agreeing to marry her. At that point I was so heartbroken that I knew no matter who I married it wouldn't make a difference, it wouldn't fill the void that Noelle had left in my heart. But it wasn't until after we were married that Samara showed me her true colors. She was a ruthless and selfish female. We did not get along at all. But it did not matter. I was the captain, and I was constantly away on missions. It was what I did. So my time with her was very limited anyway.

I landed on the tower catwalk. I folded my wings behind me and walked inside.

“I was summoned? What is it, Ritona?” I asked.

“I have summoned you here on a personal matter,” my friend Commander Ritona said.

“I am listening,” I said to him.

“I have been matched. The human female will be coming to Mooreah next week. I want to marry as soon as she arrives. Therefore, I might need…”

“You need time off from your tower watch command?” I said arching a brow at him.

“Yes, that is exactly it, Gavonn,” he said.

I smiled and patted him on the back. “Congratulations, my friend! I am very happy for you. I am not happy for this human for she does not know what she is getting into, but I am happy for you,” I joked.

“Thank you, Captain; I am very happy. This one is the one; I just know it. I cannot wait for you to meet her,” he said.

As soon as he said it, it brought back memories of my time with my own human female. Her lovely face flashed across my memory.

“Captain?” he asked concerned. My smile had faded, and I had not noticed.

“Yes, Commander,” I said.

“Are you all right? You seem out of sorts suddenly,” he said.

“No, I am fine. I was just thinking of something. But of course, you can have the time off. Just log the time that you need off, and I will approve it,” I said.

“Captain, you are thinking about her, aren't you?” he whispered to me as he leaned in for no one else to hear.

“You know me well, Ritona. Sometimes I cannot help it. But it was a long time ago. Let us not speak of it again. My sincerest congratulations to you. I mean that,” I said smiling at him and shaking his hand.

"Again, thank you, and for the time off. You are a true friend,” he said.

“Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to stretch my wings. I need to get in my practice and exercise drills for the day,” I said. He smiled and nodded, and I walked out of the tower. I stood on the ledge overlooking the vast and beautiful area. But his words only had me thinking about Noelle, and I only knew one way to get the anger out of me. I needed to fly it out of me. I jumped off the tower ledge and flew directly straight down the tower. I kept going until I was very close to the ground and then quickly swooped up, skirting along the ground, practicing a dive like that was good for battle. It was an easy way to lose an enemy, but it took a lot of strength to do.
