I make it to the department in record time. My head is roaring from the music I kept blasting to stop from hearing Addie rant at me. When I get out, I have every intention of allowing her to walk inside of her own freewill. I should have known Addie wouldn’t be reasonable—even now.

“Get out,” I tell her opening the door.

I feel more energized and alive right now than I’ve felt at any point in the last two weeks. I thought I was doing what was best for all parties involved, clearly that wasn’t true. Addie huffs…or maybe it was a snarl. But she gets out of the car, her gaze locked on my face and never leaving. She looks so satisfied and happy that I can’t resist turning to look in the direction of the street. When I do, I don’t see anything, I search but the streets are pretty empty. Mason isn’t known for its nightlife. If there are people milling about they’re usually at the bowling alley. By the time I turn around, Addie is running out of the parking lot.

“You can’t run from me, Addie,” I warn her, fighting a grin. Then, she turns around, bends down and scoops up the dirt and gravel that cover the parking area and hurls it at me.

“Bastard!” she yells and then takes off running again.

The smile disappears and in its place is a burning desire to make Addie submit. I take off after her, it’s not that hard, my strides are definitely bigger than hers. I wrap my arms around her, locking her body against mine.

“Got you,” I tell her, my chin on her shoulder, my voice—full of victory—close to her ear.

That was probably a mistake. Addie rears her leg back connecting with my shin. Then her fingernails dig into my arm trying to loosen my hold. I ignore her and use a little more force to hold her, turning her around and throwing her back over my shoulder. “You let me down right now Black!” she orders. I continue to ignore her. “I hate you. “Spanked your ass. Something your father obviously never did enough,” I grumble.

“Oh my God! Help! Help!” she cries as I open the door to the department. “Help!”

“Black?” Tani gasps. She’s filling in for the night dispatch because she had to be off today to take her daughter to the dentist. It’s just as well. Tani is easier to contain.

“That’s right I am! Tani? Is that your name? Listen, you seem reasonable,” Addie cries. “Call my father. Call the state police! Call the mental facility closest to Mason. I don’t care who you call, just call someone!”

“Tani, go home. I have this handled,” I instruct, as I walk to the hall, intent on getting to the back of the station, where the small holding cell is.

“If you’re sure…” she says nervously.

“If you’re sure?!?!?” Addie screeches. “What in the hell is wrong with you? Have you not heard of the sister code? You’re helping him molest—”

“Damn it, look up the meaning of molest, this is not it!” I growl, tired of hearing that word.

“You spanked me!”

“To molest you I’d have to touch you sexually and I haven’t—not yet, but if you don’t quit screaming at me, Addie, so help me…” I warn her.

I slam the door, praying Tani takes my advice and leaves. The mayor probably will have my job, she doesn’t need to get caught in the crossfire. I make it to the back room, slamming the door and let Addie down.

“I’ll put something in your mouth so you can’t scream.”

“I’d like to see you try!”
