His Mate - Seniors by M.L Briers (15)

“How can you not do it right…?” Angela shook her head. The woman was exasperating, and incorrigible to a fault.

“Are you being serious, because I can’t tell…?” Dorothy frowned.

“It was a rhetorical question…” Angela offered back.

“Well, trust me. If you were doing it right then you’d want to do it again, right up to the day you pop off this mortal coil.” Dorothy was adamant. “I know I’d jump at the chance to knock knees with a nice man…”

“About that…”

“About what?”

“Knocking knees with Lark…” Angela tossed up a hand in the direction of the doorway.

“You need reminding of what to do, because it’s like riding a bike…”

“Of which I probably couldn’t do at my age either,” Angela said, and when Dorothy opened her mouth to speak, Angela raised her hand to stop her. “But no, I don’t need reminding – I’m not that old that I’ve forgotten…”

“Tips then…?” Dorothy ignored Angela’s hand. “Because if it wasn’t that good for you then you were doing something wrong…”

“Can you please let me finish what I came in here to say?”

“Not if it takes longer than I have to live,” Dorothy tossed back.

“I’ve noticed a real change in your attitude since we left the home…” Angela berated her with just a look for interrupting her.

She wanted to say her piece and she wanted Dorothy to hear it – neither of which was going to happen if the woman kept interrupting her.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know this was a dictatorship on free speech.” Dorothy raised just the one eyebrow in return. “Fine. I’ll try to keep quiet in future, seen and not heard…”

“That’s not what I’m saying, if you listen to me…” Angela sighed. Dorothy huffed. Then the woman shrugged her shoulders and motioned for her to continue. “Thank you…”

“Welcome…”

“There’s been a renewed lease of life inside of you these last few days,” Angela said and held up her hand once more when Dorothy opened her mouth to speak. “And when you met Lark you seemed…”

“Horny?”

“Stop it.” Angela snapped back and Dorothy chuckled. “Interested.”

“Who wouldn’t be?”

“Me.”

“Idiot.”

“Thank you for sharing that word of wisdom.”

“Welcome.”

“I’m sorry that my actions took that away from you…” Angela said, and Dorothy’s head slowly tilted to one side and her brow furrowed.

“You silly old bat!” Dorothy bit out and Angela looked more than just surprised, she looked shocked.

“Excuse me?”

“Firstly, you didn’t take Lark away from me, because he wasn’t mine. I was flirting, and who wouldn’t? Except you. The man is a catch. And secondly, why would you apologise to me for finding the love of your life – no matter how many years you have left – he’s still that.”

Angela opened her mouth to speak, and she managed to get a strained sound out, but then she stopped and considered it for a long moment.

“But, I don’t want a man…” Angela shook her head.

“Good, because he’s not just a man – he’s a mate.”

“There’s a difference?”

“Oh dear,” Dorothy woefully shook her head at her friend. “You really were doing things wrong, weren’t you?”

“That’s not the point.” Angela waved that away and tried again. “The point is…”

“The point is. When you find love – at sixteen or sixty …”

“Boy has that ship sailed…”

“You need to grasp it with both hands and jump in with both feet.”

“That sounds uncomfortable…” Angela bit out, looking anywhere but at Dorothy.

“Grasp the nettle.”

“Again, uncomfortable…”

“I’m sure that man will make your toes curl…” Dorothy said with a glint in her eyes.

“That’s not…”

“That’s when you know you’re doing it right.” Dorothy teased.

Angela rolled her eyes to the roof and tapped her fingers on the arm of the chair. She didn’t like it – not one little bit. Love – at her age…

“But sex is so…”

“Boring when you’re not doing it right.” Dorothy leaned in towards her and Angela frowned. She wasn’t sure that she wanted to hear what came next – not from Dorothy. “And I think that mate of yours knows just how to do it right…”

The sheer mischief and glee in the other woman’s eyes made Angela groan inwardly. Just the thought of having sex, making love, getting it on with a man – any man – but definitely a man like Lark – terrified her to her very bones…

She was more than ready to take on that old vampire witch in the garden, but hop into bed with Lark … not that she could hop anywhere … that sent chills through her blood, and at her age, she considered that she had a hard enough time regulating her body temperature as it was.

“You can’t escape me, because I can track you. I have a heightened sense of smell…”

“And some really big wolf ears … yada – yada – yada… I know.” Sarah tossed back over her shoulder to the alpha as the man stalked in the front door and met her half way up the corridor … he must have run all the way, and yet he hadn’t even broken a sweat.

“Ok, tell me something that I don’t know…”

“Water’s wet.” She tossed back and got a sigh for her trouble. She was being decidedly annoying on purpose, because she had no idea what to say to him.

“Thanks for the update. I missed that one.”

“Obviously.” She shot back… “And standing closer to it with a little soap would be helpful, because you pong.” She lied, as she turned her nose up at him and diverted into the living room.

Nathan was right there behind her, but he did dip his head quickly and scented his armpits … then he grumbled a growl at her obvious lie.

Sarah walked over to the double doors out onto the back garden and tossed one open, taking in the air, and trying to calm her racing pulse.

“Invite me in…” Chloe appeared in front of her in a heartbeat, and she jumped in place, raising her hands, and more than ready to blast her vampire aunt…
