Then another.

Then another.

Then another.

The black wolf sniffed into the air and laughed.

“Dirge,” the wolf said. “I can smell your stink from a mile away. You have no business here.”

“Let us go,” Knight said. “Let us go and we won’t bother you.”

“You’re already bothering us! You’re in our territory. And you must be taught a lesson!”

They all howled to the sky at once. Their war cry sent a chill through my spine.

“Go,” Knight said as he turned to me.

“What?”

“Go ahead. I will catch up to you.”

“But your leg—”

“I know the direction you’re heading. Just go forward and I will get to you. I’ll find you!”

“Knight—”

“Go, Oliver!”

He shouted at me loud enough to get me to back off.

“Knight…”

I watched helplessly as he shifted into a jaguar.

He was more majestic than I ever imagined. Golden fur with beautiful black spots. His chest stuck out proudly. Despite the injury to his leg, he moved like nothing was wrong.

“I said go, Oliver!”

“Yes, go, fox,” the wolf encouraged me. “We’ll kill you later.”

I gathered Knight’s pack and strapped it to my back. Against my better judgment, I turned around and ran across the river into the forest. I looked back just in time to see the violent snarling of the wolves as they engaged Knight.

“It’s okay,” I told myself. “He’ll be all right.”

It was the only way I could reassure myself to keep going. Leaving Knight behind broke my heart but there was no other way to get away from the wolves.

I could only hope and pray that he had to strength to deal with them.
