Passion Punched King (Balance Book 2) by Lisa Oliver (26)

Three months later

“Have you seen any sign of Haures, tonight? I thought he was going to help behind the bar.” Zagan carefully lowered a large box of bottled beer to the floor and started stocking the refrigerator shelves. There were three hen parties in and the club was hopping. He glanced across but Anael was too busy to answer, pouring drinks, taking money, all with his ready smile. Zagan was sure a large part of their club’s success was due to his happy angel and his familiarity with their surroundings.

Okay, so maybe he shouldn’t have taken advantage of Darren’s untimely demise, but when his insurance money from his burned club came through and Darren’s club popped up on the market at the same time, Zagan couldn’t resist. His sweet angel got delightfully jealous when he thought Zagan planned on keeping the place as a strip club, but Zagan soothed his fears, showed him the plans and within a month their newly revised club “AZ” was open.

But there was a downside to their success. They barely got any time alone anymore. Anael was in his element, happily nudging connections along with drinks all night long. Zagan served drinks, kept an eye on the bouncers and tried to spend at least an hour each night keeping track of paperwork. That was without his responsibilities in the Underworld. In more ways than one, he was overstressed, undersexed and he’d had enough of it. That’s why Haures’s whereabouts was so important. If he didn’t arrive soon, all Zagan’s other plans would be ruined.

“Did I hear you ask about Haures?” Anael knelt beside him, helping him unload the boxes. “He got here about an hour ago. He has a friend with him, one of yours. They’re sitting watching the go-go dancers although they don’t seem to want company.”

“Damn Haures,” Zagan put the last two bottles on the shelves and stood. “He knew I wanted him here tonight for a special reason.”

“Special reason?” Anael’s eyebrow arched. “Does it have anything to do with his beautiful friend? A slender guy who looks like a dark-haired angel. Should I be worried?”

“Seir is here? Hmm, didn’t see that coming.” Zagan popped a brief kiss on Anael’s head and grabbed the empty boxes. “Be ready to take your break in about ten minutes,” he said striding off to the storeroom. “I have plans for you.”

Zagan thought he heard Anael whisper something along the lines of I hope so, but that could be a figment of his own fevered imagination. Working till four am, getting to bed by five, both men were more than ready for sleep by the time they hit the sheets. Sleep-ins were inevitably broken by calls either from Lucifer, Porag or someone wanting to drop off deliveries at the club. Zagan could count the number of times he and Anael had managed any intimacy in the past two weeks on one hand. He’d advertised for a club manager but so far no one had passed the interview process.

“And that all stops now,” he muttered as he dropped the empty cartons in the trash and went to find Haures. His cock was ready to stage a strike, his lips quivered with the need to claim his sweet Anael and he was edgy enough he was likely to shift and clear out the club of unsuspecting humans just so he could ravish his mate’s body over the freaking bar if necessary.

“Haures, Seir, good to see you.” Zagan wasted no time in joining his friends, grabbing a chair and sitting on it backwards. “I thought you were taking over the bar for me tonight, Haures? The bike’s packed, the hotel’s booked. I’m just waiting on you.”

“Don’t get your cock in a knot,” Haures laughed. “Seir said he was currently at a loose end and wanted some time away from home. I thought, seeing as you were spiriting away the only pretty thing in this club, Seir might be glad of the distraction and help me out. I’m just filling him in on what needs doing around here.”

“Is everything okay at home?” Zagan wasn’t going to use the term Underworld even if the music was loud and barely anyone was paying them any attention. And Haures had a point about Seir. All demons were good looking although most of them tended to be more handsome than pretty. Seir was more slender than most demons, his face finely chiseled and his dark hair falling in long waves down his back. But he was powerful in his own right and often in demand in the Underworld because of his ability to find hidden treasures. His kind nature and beautiful features were the perfect camouflage as one of Hell’s princes. Many people tried to take advantage of his pretty face and then lived to regret it.

“Boring, trivial, nothing to worry about,” Seir said waving his hand. “It’s just I haven’t been up here in at least fifty years and when Haures said he was running your club for a couple of weeks, I thought why not join him. There seems to be a bit of a mating buzz going on right now. I might find someone of my own, if your mate can point me in the right direction.”

“That can wait until my mate and I get back,” Zagan shook his head crossly. Seir wasn’t the first demon wanting to access his mate’s powers and he wouldn’t be the last. But right now, Zagan had more important things to worry about like getting his mate out of the club without him causing a fuss. “Anael’s just about ready to take his break. I’m going to take him outside and we’re not coming back, so take the keys and get your asses into gear. Those drinks don’t serve themselves.”

“Anael might not be in a hurry to leave,” Haures pointed through a gap in the crowds towards the bar. “He’s got company.” Then his eyes widened. “Damn, is that Uriel the muse?”

“Fucking hell,” Zagan banged his head on the table three times before he sat up. “I don’t care,” he said firmly. “No fucking way. They’re not spending the rest of the night catching up on old times. Damn it. This is my time with Anael. I’ve got everything planned and no angel with a hang up is going to stop me.”

“I’ll keep Uriel company,” Haures promised, standing and straightening his shirt. “You leave him with me, he’s in good hands.”

“Yeah, well good luck with that. I’m not sure he’s got over his dislike of our kind but you’re welcome to give it a go. In the meantime, keep the crowds away and be prepared to hear some yelling. We’re leaving now.”

Pushing through the happy clubbers, Zagan moved around the bar. Anael’s face was flushed and he was biting his bottom lip. “Zagan, have you met Uriel? He’s a friend of mine. He’s just got back from his trip.”

“Nice to meet you,” Zagan quickly shook the hand offered. “Anael, I need to see you outside now.”

“But Uriel and I….”

“Now.” Bending down, Zagan threw Anael over his shoulder. “See you in two weeks,” he said with a wave as he headed for the back door. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

Yeah, probably shouldn’t have said that, but Zagan trusted Haures and to a lesser extent, Seir. And if anything did happen, they were insured. He turned his focus to where it needed to be, on his struggling, highly annoyed wee angel.

“Put me down. Uriel and I were talking. This is the first chance I’ve had to speak to him in months,” Anael yelled as Zagan stepped outside and slammed the exit door behind them. The loud music, laughter and excited chatter all went silent the moment the door was closed.

“I’ll put you down in a minute, precious, when we get to the bike.”

“Bike?” Anael pushed himself upright staring down at him. “It’s not home time.”

“No, it’s not. It’s holiday time.” Zagan grinned showing all his teeth. “It’s holiday time, you and me time. Two weeks away with no phones, internet or people likely to drop in.”

“I’ve already squared it with Lucifer and Gabriel,” Zagan added quickly as Anael frowned. “Haures and Seir are going to run the club. Raziel and Botis have promised to keep an eye on them and my legions and you can do your thing wherever we go so Gabriel’s not worried.”

“A two-week holiday? Just you and me and nothing else?” Anael’s eyes gleamed. “Really? You did this for me? Woo hoo!” Zagan almost lost hold of his precious bundle as Anael bent to try and kiss him. Loosening his arms, Zagan let Anael slip down so his kissing attempts would be more successful.

“I did it for us,” he said softly, his lips tingling in anticipation. “Love should never be taken for granted, I seem to remember you telling me that. Well, I beg to differ. I plan on taking advantage of your sweet body, your hot lips and that sexy mind of yours. But most of all, I just want to spend time with you – no interruptions, forms to fill out or wretched phone calls. Just you and me.”

“Complete with a hot tub, a bottle of wine and food just a phone call away?” Anael edged closer.

“All of the above and me.”

“You. That’s perfect.” Anael grinned as their lips touched and Zagan had to remind himself not to get carried away. They had an hour’s drive on the bike ahead of them and Anael still tended to glow when he got sexually excited. Zagan wasn’t sure if it was something humans could see, but he wasn’t prepared to take that chance. Taking just the briefest of sips from lips he wanted to devour, he nudged Anael towards the bike.

“Want to ride off into the sunset with me?” He waggled his eyebrows as he lifted his leg over the bike and moved forward on the tank to allow Anael to get on behind him.

“It’s the middle of the night,” Anael laughed as he climbed up easily. “Lead on lover, I’ll follow you to the ends of the earth if it means I get to spend alone time with you.”

Starting the bike, the roar of the engine magnified by the narrowness of the alley, Zagan took off gently, unwilling to unseat his precious passenger. They couldn’t be killed but Zagan didn’t plan on spending two weeks picking grit and gravel out of Anael’s skin. With his back warmed by Anael’s presence and the open road ahead of him, Zagan took off into the night, knowing no matter what happened in their future, with Anael by his side, the darkness of the night was nothing but an illusion. He had all the light he’d ever need, riding behind him. Just perfect.

The End

The next book in this series will be about Haures and Uriel as I am sure my astute readers have already guessed. There will be meet ups with old friends and finding some new ones as Haures tries to woo his angel while Uriel struggles to cope with the sins of his past. Raziel and Botis, Anael and Zagan and of course, the irrepressible Lucifer all play their part and even the elusive Gabriel makes an appearance or two. Keep an eye on my social media pages for more news on that one as it comes to hand.

Thank you so much for taking the time to get this far. Remember if you did enjoy this story, please consider leaving a review.
