Rocking Perfection (Reckless Release Book 3) by Cassandra Lawson (49)

Chapter 66

Xander

I was shocked when Mitch finally agreed to meet with me. I hadn’t wanted to call him since I was convinced it would be a waste of my time, but Cami hadn’t been willing to back down on the idea of talking to him. In the end, it was her or me. She thought talking to Mitch would help shed some light on what was going on. I suspected Mitch’s ex-wife was the problem, but for all I knew, he could have other crazy exes.

Madi was likely going to be pissed when she realized I’d headed out to meet Mitch without security, but she’d get over it. There hadn’t been time to arrange for someone to accompany me to the meeting. Mitch had reluctantly agreed to meet at a restaurant close to Cami’s office in Fremont. I’d be cutting it close, but I expected to still be on time to drive Cami home from work.

Mitch looked irritated as he approached the table, but his voice was still pleasant. “I’m surprised you asked for this meeting. I figured you’d given up.”

“I’m surprised you finally agreed to meet me. This mess needs to be cleared up. I don’t want Cami being forced to talk to you.”

“She’s been emailing me.” Mitch’s tone was accusatory.

“Can I see the emails?” I asked.

He didn’t agree right away, and it looked like he was about to refuse when Mitch finally pulled up the email string on his phone and handed it to me. “She doesn’t trust you.”

I didn’t argue. What was the point? He didn’t know jack shit about Cami or me. With any luck, I’d see something in the emails to convince him it wasn’t Cami. I read several emails before laughing and shaking my head.

“You find it amusing that Cami is jerking us both around?” he asked.

“Cami didn’t send these emails.”

At first, he looked like he was going to argue with me, but in the end, he gestured to his phone. “Why don’t you think it’s Cami?”

“First, this person is claiming that my dick isn’t that big. Groupies mention it for good reason.” I didn’t care if I sounded arrogant. No one would ever consider my dick small.

Mitch snorted. “I’m sure a lot of guys think their six inches is huge, and groupies aren’t known for their honesty in that area.”

“Try nine and a half inches.”

His eyes widened at my correction. “Really?”

“Yeah, really,” I replied.

“She could have just been saying that,” he argued. “I’m sure women do that to stroke another guy’s ego. She’s certainly not going to tell me you’re nearly an inch longer than I am.”

It was all I could do to keep from laughing. I suspected Mitch wasn’t willing to admit his real size. “Other things are off, but mostly, the dates and times don’t work. Some of these emails were sent while she was with patients or out with me. This also isn’t Cami’s email address. Can you honestly imagine Cami saying she’s so angry that she wants to stab someone in the kidney? Who even says that?”

With a pensive expression, Mitch considered what I’d said. “I guess I wanted it to be her.”

“But it isn’t. You need to tell the police about this,” I told him. “We’ve already talked to them about it, but they’ll have an easier time figuring out who this is with your help.”

“I know who it is,” Mitch admitted quietly.

“Your ex-wife?” I asked.

His eyes narrowed. “How do you know about her?”

“I had you investigated when you were first bothering Cami,” I explained.

He closed his eyes and let out a tired sigh. “I was acting a little crazy. In my defense, I thought Cami would be the perfect wife for me.”

“You don’t even know her,” I accused.

“Apparently not,” he agreed quietly. “If I knew her better, I might not have been duped by Emily. I should call the police. My ex-wife has a history of violence, as I’m sure you learned when you had me investigated.”

“Do you think she’ll go after Cami?” I asked.

He opened his mouth to reply but hesitated before carefully considering his answer. “I want to tell you no, but I’m not sure. It’s been more than a year since I last heard from Emily, so I never even considered that she might be involved. She must have stopped taking her medication again. That’s what happened the last time she showed up out of the blue. You should probably warn Cami to keep an eye out for her.”

“I’ll call her now.” I pulled out my phone and hit Cami’s name. She should be done with her last session and be tying things up in the office. She was expecting me to call to let her know I was on the way. The call rang until it went to voicemail. With a frown, I tried again. Something wasn’t right. If her last appointment had run long, the call would have gone straight to voicemail as all her calls did when she was in session. There were good reasons she might not be answering her phone, but none eased my worries.

“Is everything okay?” Mitch asked.

“She’s not answering,” I replied.

“It’s possible she’s with a patient,” he told me.

“She’s not.” I dropped money on the table. “I’m going to head over to her office to make sure everything’s okay.”

“I’ll go with you,” he said as he stood. “I’ll never forgive myself if something happens to Cami.”

I nodded, and we hurried out of the restaurant. I might not like Mitch, but I wouldn’t turn down his help if Cami might be in danger.
