She’s silently working on her article. I watch her tap away at the keyboard as if I’m a man hooked. I am. I was the moment I laid eyes on her. Her fire drew me to her, like a moth ready to die against the flame.

My brother and his wife have twin girls, and they both have their daddy wrapped around their little fingers.

“Sounds good,” I respond. “Who else is coming?”

“Mason and Savvie will be there, along with their aunt Cayleigh. I’ve just spoken to Nate and Eva. They’ll bring their little boy, Ainsley. And then we’re waiting on Elijah and Gia to let us know if they’re able to come. Gia’s just had a baby, a little girl they’ve named Raquel,” Peyton informs me. “Oh! And Chance, my brother, will be there, too, with Oliver.”

“We’ll be there definitely.”

“Great, a family get-together,” Carrick smirks.

This is life. I watch my brother with Peyton, and I am thankful to a God I no longer believe in that we’re still here. Our lives have moved on, we’ve found love, and we’ve finally stepped out from under the family obligations that held us back for so long.

When my father learned that I wanted to live in America, he wasn’t angry. I thought he’d disown us both, but he understood. There are times I wonder what it would be like to go back to that life, but now, with my new job running my own security company, I’m happy.
