Ryker (Hell's Renegades Book 1) by Dawn Robertson (30)

A Note From Seven

I fucking killed one man and I swear to everything fucking holy in this world that I will do it again. Never in a million years did I think that little ponytail bitch Pierce would try and fuck me over. Lyric was like a wrapped Christmas gift I gave him, all naive and blind to what was actually going on. I should have seen it a million miles away, but I was lost inside my own fucking head. I dropped the ball and I let my sister down.

Revenge runs in my blood. I’ve never been the kind of person who could get fucked over and just let it go. I’ve had it happen enough times to me over the years that it became personal. It made me Seven James.

Knowing all that I know today, I have enough to make sure he never sees the light of day again. Our lawyers are the best and the DA is out for blood. I always love the new guys, so eager to get their first big conviction. But I have a dilemma because behind door number two is a much more pleasing option. I got a taste for blood and I want it again. So much more fun.

With the Renegades’ connections I could have that motherfucker delivered right to my door step. Not that I would… too much to lose these days, but it doesn’t make the idea any less mouthwatering.

I should feel bad about taking a life. Any normal person would, but given the circumstances and the fact that I am anything but normal… the mere option has me itching for the adrenaline rush. These are bad men. Criminal men. Men who deserve everything that comes their way. But what is the right thing to do? The right thing for me to do by my family.

I can’t help but see the faces of my children when I think about this, but I also know these fuckers would use my kids against me if they ever saw the chance. I’ve become overprotective because of that. Paranoid even sometimes. Levi does a good job of taking the edge off but it’s happened too many times. Paisley, and Star, fuckin’ Lyric and kidnappings… it’s always fucking something.

A knock on my office door disturbs me from my thoughts. The door cracks open and my assistant stands there, hands behind her back and her glasses hanging from the edge of her nose.

“Ryker for you, Miss James-Parker

“Thank you,” I say, dismissing her while this fuckface walks in. I never liked the cocky little shit, but now I have to give him the time of day because of Lyric. They are meant to be together, though, that’s for sure.

“What ya got for security in here?” He looks around, scanning his surroundings.

“Nothing inside my office. Video outside. No recording devices. Whole place has been swept for bugs too.” Paranoid I tell ya.

“Okay, good. So about that job. I have someone who can do it for you. The price is a hundred grand,” he says, plopping down in the chair across from me.

“What’s his story?”

“Old biker, got a bad deal because his public defender was a twat. He wants enough for a new lawyer.”

“What’s he in for?” I ask. I need to know what kind of person he is before making any agreements with a criminal. No matter how removed I’ll be from it all.

“Runnin’ guns like the rest of us.” He shrugs, not looking too concerned.

“Set it up,” I tell him, and I don’t even blink at the price of a man’s life. Not when he crossed me. Not with what he did to my sister. Had she been hurt even worse, I would have done this all my fucking self.

“No problemo, boss lady,” he sings, getting up from the chair.

“You takin’ good care of my baby sister?” I ask him, while putting the fear of God in him all at the same time.

“Sure am, check this out,” he says, pulling a small black box from his pants pocket.

“Figured I’d show you first so my balls don’t end up in a jar on your shelf.”

A small, perfect diamond sits on a band of rose gold. The light catches it perfectly and it sparkles like every diamond should. The clarity is stunning.

“You hurt her ever again, and I’ll kill you too,” I state with a laugh while punching him in the arm. The look on his face is absolutely priceless because if there is anyone that knows… it’s Ryker.

“That’s a promise,” I add with a wink.

“Oh, I know,” he laughs on his way out the door.

What can I say? When it comes to my family… you just don’t fuck with them. There are limits in life. Lines you should never cross. And as new as Lyric is to my life, I protect her fiercely because that is my job as her sister.

I’m the protector.

I’m the badass bitch I’ve always been.

I’m Seven Motherfucking James.
