Chapter Nineteen

I woke up to an empty bed and very nearly panicked. For a moment, I thought that perhaps Savannah had been taken. Then I heard the sound of the shower running in Savannah’s room. I rolled out of bed and walked naked through the house. I felt the sudden urge to bathe. Or at least stand in the shower and watch Savannah wash her body. A body that I had touched and kissed last night. I’d fallen asleep holding her, feeling more at peace than I had in my long life.
Satchel sat in front of the open bathroom door, her eyes narrowed on me as her tail twitched with irritation.
“Sorry, kitty, but you should know my heart belonged to your owner before I even met you.”
She turned her nose up at me and pranced out of the bedroom with her head held high. I bit back a laugh at the cat’s attitude. I’d never met another animal with such a noticeable personality. It was almost as if the cat had a human brain.
I walked into the bathroom, my eyes immediately drawn to the glass shower stall in the corner. Steam wafted in the air and I could hear Savannah humming softly as the water washed over her. Silently, I opened the door to the shower and stood completely still. Last night, I’d seen her body in the dim light of the moon, but now the sight of her hit me in the gut. She was gorgeous. Her pale, freckled skin was pink from the hot water and the slope of her back narrowed at her waist before flaring out into amply curved hips and buttocks.

Her smile widened. “Uncontrollable passion?”
“Hmm. That sounds better, but I still want to taste every part of you.” When Savannah shivered beneath me, it was my turn to smile. “I think you like that idea.”
Her cheeks turned pink but she met my eyes. “I do, but only if I can return the favor.” As she spoke, her hand smoothed over my back as though she were relishing the texture of my skin. “I think you’re beautiful.”
“So are you,” I replied. I withdrew from her body slowly, hating that I needed to leave her, but the condom felt odd. “I’ll be right back.”
I walked into the bathroom, dropped the strange glove into the trashcan, and washed my hands. I disliked the condoms, but Savannah seemed adamant that she wasn’t ready to have a child. I wasn’t sure I could even father a babe, but I would wear whatever she asked me to if it meant I could have her.
When I returned to the bedroom, I found Savannah tucked beneath the covers, already asleep. Moving carefully, I climbed in beside her and curved my body around her back. Immediately, she snuggled back against me and sighed in her sleep.
Content, I slid one arm beneath her pillow and wrapped the other around her waist. I fell asleep holding the woman I loved and never once thought of the nightmares that had plagued me for weeks until last night.
