The Devil's Scars (The Road Devils MC Book 1) by Marysol James (21)

Zoe woke up suddenly, turned over in the darkness to reach for Scars. He was gone, and she sat up, worried that maybe he was in pain after all. They had been… ummmm… quite athletic.

“Scars?” she said, wondering if he was in the attached bathroom. “Babe?”

There was no response, and she grabbed one of his t-shirts draped across a chair, tugged it on. She hurried across the bedroom floor, eased the door open. That was when she heard Scars’ low voice in the living room, murmuring and singing a bit to soft music, and Zoe smiled.

She tiptoed down the hallway now, peeked around the corner. Sure enough, there was Scars in his boxer shorts, Keira in a fresh onesie and cradled in those strong arms, as they danced to ‘Sweet Jane’, one of Zoe’s favorite songs ever. Keira was gazing up at him, and he was staring right on back, and the connection between them was so full of love and warmth, it was almost physical. Scars was singing to the baby, and he’d changed the words in the song to ‘Sweet Peach’: every time he sang that, Keira gurgled and wriggled her bare little toes.

Delighted, touched, a bit teary, Zoe held her breath, not wanting to give herself away, wanting to just observe this achingly beautiful moment between her daughter and her man. She felt humbled and honored to be able to see it, really, because as life had shown her recently, these perfect and pure moments are rare, and when they come along after months of hell, or are stumbled upon at two o’clock in the morning, they have to be seen, appreciated, remembered.

But maybe – just maybe – once in a blue moon, they didn’t have to stay stolen, rare, fleeting moments, moments that passed and became tender, poignant memories. Maybe they could be just the first of many such moments; moments that slowly added up, over years, over time, over a lifetime. Maybe – just maybe, Zoe – these moments could become a whole life. Not all the time, of course, not every second of every day. But maybe there could be enough of them with Scars and with Keira that they’d become the backbone of her life, its core and center. Its heart.

Could this moment actually be my whole life?

The song ended, Scars deposited a tiny kiss on Keira’s hair, and the baby laughed and kicked her feet.

“Another one, little peach?” Scars asked her, and Keira made a happy sound. “That’s a yes, huh? We gonna dance all night while Mommy sleeps?” He started to sway again. “Well… God knows I need the exercise, kiddo.”

Remembering their enthusiastic and breath-stealing activities from just a few hours earlier, Zoe giggled, giving herself away. Scars turned to look at her standing there barefoot, miles of curvy leg exposed, and his eyes darkened with lust, loving that he knew she was naked underneath that baggy shirt, and loving even more that he knew how she looked naked. She was pure sin disguised as a blonde, emerald-eyed angel, and he’d never tire of her.

“Hey, beautiful,” he grated out, stripping the material off her with his heated gaze. “How long you been standing there?”

“Just for a minute.”

Keira heard her mother’s voice, and twisted in Scars’ embrace, her one arm reaching for Zoe, even as she still clung to Scars’ muscular bicep. That was when Zoe knew, knew for sure, and without fear.

“Scars?”

“Yeah, Zoe?”

“Marry me?”

He stood rock-still and stopped breathing for a few seconds, and Zoe found that she was holding her own. Then:

“Hell, yeah, baby.” His hard, gruff voice was full of light and joy. “Oh, hell, yeah.”

She smiled then, and the whole damn room lit up, and Scars rejoiced fiercely that he’d be the lucky man who’d see that smile for the rest of his life.

“Wanna dance?” Scars said. “This little one is pretty good, I can tell you.”

“I noticed.” Zoe padded across the rug, smiling at Keira. “She puts you to shame, Innis.”

The beautiful, strong, incredible woman coming to dance with him was a woman that Scars knew in ways that he’d never known anyone before, and never wanted to know anyone again. She was it. He knew her on a cellular level. In his blood. In his bones. In his heart and in his cock. He’d dreamed about her and he’d waited for her. He’d been looking for her forever, and now here she was.

Just walking on over to me, ready for a dance that will last a lifetime. The first dance of many many many.

Dreams really do come true, man.
