She brushes the hair from my face. “You never have to.”

I stare right into her blue eyes and know my emotions are showing through. “Do you mean that?”

“I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t. We’ve both risked a lot to be together. It’s not a decision I made lightly, but one I knew from the very start was right. This isn’t temporary for me. I’m in this with you for as long we can be together.”

Closing my eyes, I rest my chin atop her head. I think to myself, “I don’t deserve you.”

Addison stiffens in my arms then pushes back from me. Her eyes are wide. “What did you just say?”

I look at her perplexed. “Nothing, I was only thinking.”

“Your thought,” she says quickly. “What was it?”

I’m not sure why she’s asking, but I indulge her. “That I don’t deserve you.”

“You spoke that to me.”

My eyebrows furrow. “No I didn’t. I only thought it.”

“Oliver, listen to what I’m saying. I heard you…in my mind!”

Now it’s my turn for my eyes to become huge. “No!”

“Yes!” A wide smile appears on her beautiful face. “You’ve never been able to do that before have you?”

“No, not at all.”

“This is so exciting,” she says all giddy. “Let’s try something. I want you to speak to me again, but not aloud. Talk with your mind.”

“I don’t know if I can. I didn’t exactly do it intentionally before.”

“Okay,” I mumble, unsure if I’ll be able to do it again. I close my eyes and think, “In the darkest of nights, you shine brighter than any star in the realm.”

She sucks in a breath. My eyes snap open at the sound. “You did it,” she says. “You spoke to me again. I can’t believe it. We can talk to one another without actually having to open our mouths. This is amazing.” She lets out a little scream and throws her arms around me. “I’m not alone anymore. Someone can speak to me like I can to them,” she says in my mind.

My arms tighten around her as I think, “As long as I’m alive, you’ll never be alone again.”

She stills for a moment, her voice small when she speaks, “I didn’t mean to send that to you.”

“I’m glad you did. Maybe when we came together, and our connection strengthened, you unlocked this part of me, which can communicate. I wonder if I can talk to everyone, or if it’s only you. We’ll have to test it out when we get back to the castle.”

“I hope it’s only me.”

“Jealous, love?”

“Where you’re concerned? Yes, absolutely.”

I chuckle. “The feeling is mutual.” She becomes quiet. “I want to know what you’re thinking, Addison. I don’t want to be kept in the dark. I want to know every single part of you intimately. That includes this beautiful mind of yours.”

She burrows her face into the crook of my neck. “I think you have it wrong.”

“What’s that?”

“I’m the one who doesn’t deserve you.”
