SEAL of Approval by Lynn Faye, Sarah J. Brooks (63)

Matthew

I know Kayla wanted more from me and there was a part of me that wanted to give it to her. I did like having her around and I loved having her in my bed, but I just wasn’t in a position to have a girlfriend. If we could figure out a way to keep things casual while also working together, that would be the ideal situation for me.

I knew I needed to calm down my anger around her though. She wouldn’t want to stay working for me if I was always an asshole. My anger had worked for a purpose in the beginning, but at this point I needed her more than I cared what others thought. Perhaps I could find a balance of distance at work and closeness when we were away from work.

The disappointment on her face was heartbreaking when I told her I invited her to the White House event to help me with the social end of the business. But I just couldn’t get emotionally attached to her. Kayla had to be a person I used to get what I wanted; otherwise I would be too distracted by her.

“Kayla, come in here now,” I yelled into the work area.

Kayla hated when I yelled for her and had told me several times to just text her and she would come to my office. But I liked yelling for her, I liked getting her a little agitated with me, it helped me keep my distance from her at work; it also set the stage for the other office staff not considering the possibility that Kayla and I were anything more than co-workers.

I saw the agitation on her face as she got up from her desk and made her way to my office. It was difficult for me not to smile at her. She was too fucking adorable when she was mad, I actually liked it. I had to hide my desire to take her right there.

“Senator Storm, please feel free to buzz my phone or send me a message anytime you need me. I’d be happy to come right in,” Kayla said loud enough that the whole office heard her.

I ignored her and continued on with what I needed. It was hard to resist smiling though and I really had to try and be a little mean to keep myself from giving in to the laughter inside. Kayla was frigging adorable when she was mad.

“We have the White House dinner tomorrow; I need to go over our strategy.”

“Sure,” Kayla said reluctantly.

As I closed my office door I saw something flying toward me out of the corner of my eye; it was Kayla’s hand.

She almost made contact with my face, but I reached up and stopped her just in time. The fire in her eyes was so sexually arousing I didn’t care how angry she was at me. I had to bite my lip to avoid bending her over and slapping her ass or at the very least kissing her.

“Matthew, stop yelling at me in front of everyone. They get it! We aren’t dating! But seriously everyone already thinks you’re a jerk, you can stop now.”

“Does it make you angry?” I asked as I continued to hold her hand in the air. A small smirk crossed my face, even though I tried to stop myself.

“Don’t you laugh at me Matthew, don’t you dare laugh at me.”

“I’m sorry,” I said as I inadvertently broke out in a full on laugh. “Really, I am.”

“Matthew Storm, you are purposely making me angry.”

“No, really I wasn’t. But the look on your face was turning me on so much at the moment that I just couldn’t resist.”

I thought she would have softened up a little after hearing that I was turned on by her anger, but it in fact made her even angrier. Her eyes steamed as she looked at me and I decided it was time to back off a little bit.

“Do you want to talk about the White House or not?”

“I do.”

“Then get your ass over here and let’s sit down and talk about it. Who do we need to talk to? What do we need to accomplish?”

“God you’re fucking sexy when you talk business too.”

I tried to reach for her to pull her toward me, but Kayla just walked away and sat down at the small conference table in the corner of my office.

We hadn’t had sex since the night after her partying. The night that I invited her to come to the White House event with me; and then told her I needed her to be my assistant. It had to be that way though; I couldn’t risk the emotional issues that came with having anything more between us.

“I’m going back to my desk if you don’t actually have anything to talk about.”

“I do. Sit down.”

The firmness in my tone told Kayla that I was serious and from that point forward she sat and listened to my plans for our night at the White House. She appeared to genuinely pay attention and I got over our little lust fest from earlier.

“Senator Masson is going to be the next Speaker of the House and we are going to convince everyone how great he will be at it. Since Edwards has been on the Arms Committee I have been hearing a lot of information about things going on and I need Masson out of my way.”

“What do you mean? How will he be out of your way if he’s the Speaker? Won’t he be even more in your way?”

I wasn’t about to tell Kayla everything that was going on, for her protection and for mine. But within only a few short months there was going to be an opening in the White House and I needed to be ready to take it. Which meant that Senator Masson was going to need to be in the middle of a big political mess and the only way that could happen was if he was Speaker of the House.

“You’re going to need to trust me on this Kayla.”

She rolled her eyes at me at first but then appeared to be thinking through the scenarios. She was a smart girl and I assumed she was going to come by the reason I was doing what I was; but I certainly wasn’t going to say the words out loud. I couldn’t risk openly incriminating myself like that.

“I have one condition.”

“What is it?”

“You have to stop yelling at me in front of everyone. Did you yell at Alex like that?”

“Yes. Actually much worse, I’m pretty sure I called him names, too.”

“Well I can’t take it. It stresses me out and I want to punch you in the face every time you do it so please for the love of God stop yelling at me in front of everyone!”

Kayla’s voice had progressively gotten louder as she stood up at the table and ended by pounding her hands loudly to emphasis her point. Damn she was fucking sexy as hell when she was angry.

“Sure, I’ll stop,” I said with a smile.

Kayla looked at me in disgust and headed toward the door; she stopped for a brief moment and looked back at me.

“And stop smiling at me all the time!” She yelled before she slammed the door shut.

I knew by the tone of her voice that I needed to switch things up and be a little sweeter if I was going to keep her working for me throughout my plan.
