Bear Lover (She-Shifters of Hell's Corner Book 6) by Candace Ayers (12)

Pratt

I grouched around the house as everyone mingled and looked around at all the work Axel and I had put into the house. I wanted my mate and I wanted her alone. I knew she had a swing in one of those boxes that had come in and I was eager to install it and try it out. I wanted her suspended, tied up, and begging for more.

Luna popped out of the kitchen, like she could hear my thoughts, and met my eyes. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes flashed in the way they did when she was eager and excited. I knew she was up to something. She was an easy read. I had no clue what it was, though. She’d been whispering with Charlie for days and when I’d asked her about it, she’d just grinned and distracted me with sex.

Axel knocked me on the shoulder and nodded to my mate. “She’s up to something, isn’t she?”

I looked over at him and felt my heart flutter when I saw that he was holding his daughter. Maddie was four and already the light of her parents’ eyes. She’d been with them for almost three months and it was already as if she’d been theirs since birth. “She is.”

He kissed Maddie on the head and handed her off to me. “I’m going to find my wife and we’re going to steal some of your booze. I’m exhausted, man.”

I held Maddie as she curled her little fingers around a lock of my hair. She was the apple of her daddy’s eye, no doubt about it. She was tiny for her age and I couldn’t help thinking of Luna when she was that age. How small she must’ve been. I wondered if our baby would be small like its mother. A protective flare blossomed in my chest and I knew that I’d hunt down anyone who tried to hurt our kid.

Maddie watched her parents and squirmed until I put her down. I watched as she ran straight for Axel and hit him in the back of the knees. Axel went down hard and Charlie stood above him, laughing hysterically.

Muddy and Lang had just walked in when Luna popped out of the kitchen. She hurried over to them and she and Muddy hugged while Lang walked over to me to shake my hand.

“Congrats on finishing the house, man. It’s fantastic. You want to come build mine?”

I snorted. “You know you’ll be living in that bed and breakfast until you’re old and gray. Muddy isn’t leaving it.”

He sighed. “Let’s don’t talk about it. It’s a sensitive subject today. The crazy old Flamingo geriatrics keep coming back and I’m about ready to shift and eat them all for dinner.”

Muddy and Luna breezed by. “They’re not crazy, they’re guests and you’re going to have to deal with it.”

Carter’s daughter, Jellybean, flew past me, chasing a dog that I didn’t recognize. Raif and Denny’s daughter, Candy, was just learning to take her first steps, but she was crawling after Jellybean and the unknown dog as fast as her little hands and knees could take her. I heard something break and then Alec’s booming, New York accented voice ring out. “Jellybean! Put that dog back outside!”

Carter appeared at my side and grinned sheepishly. “Sorry about whatever that was. Bill us.”

“Don’t think I wasn’t already.”

She laughed and vanished after her mate and child.

Sonnie and Denny moved past me, chatting away as Sonnie absently filled a plate for her daughter, Honnie.

Holt and Raif stopped at my side and we were quickly joined by Axel, Alec, and Lang. I looked around at all of them and shook my head. “Hell’s Crazy Corner, huh?”

They laughed and Axel shook his head. “Never had a clue about what was waiting for us in this insane place.”

Lang wagged his eyebrows. “Oh, I had a clue.”

Alec watched as Jellybean and the dog ran past again. “Her mother can worry about it.”

Holt caught Maddie as she went flying past. “What’s the toll for getting to your daddy?”

“What?”

“A hug for your Uncle Holt. Don’t be cheap with it, either.” Lang watched Maddie squeeze Holt’s neck with all her might. “We’ve been talking about maybe trying for one of our own.”

I just laughed. “Might as well. Just add one more to our bunch. If we keep it up, we’ll have a football team before long.”

Luna suddenly came out of the kitchen with a nervous smile on her face. Her eyes were focused on me and the rest of the party died down as she made her way over.

I grinned and raised my eyebrows at her. “What’s this?”

She raised up on her tiptoes and pressed her mouth against my neck. Then, she whispered against my ear so softly that I almost missed it. “It’s a girl.”

The rest of the party erupted, but I didn’t get it. “What?”

She pulled back and looked up at me. “Our baby. A girl.”

I looked around at everyone cheering for us. “A girl?”

She nodded and held up two fingers in a peace sign. A peaceful girl? My mouth fell open and I felt like someone had squeezed my heart. “That isn’t a peace sign is it?” She shook her head, grinning from ear to ear. “Twins? We’re having twins?”

She laughed and tears filled her eyes. “We’re having twin girls.”

“We’re having girls!” I picked her up and spun her around. Wrapping her legs around my waist, I held onto her ass and pulled back enough to kiss her like I hadn’t seen her in months. “A girl…and a girl.”

She kissed my forehead and eyes and cheeks. “I love you, Jason.”

I kissed her again and spun her around again. “I love you, Luna. I love you so much.”

She slid down my body and rubbed her hands over my chest. “I was going to surprise you with pink filled cupcakes, but you kept me a little busy this afternoon, so no surprise cupcakes for you.”

I looked around at everyone watching us with huge smiles on their faces. I knew that they were just as excited for us as they were for themselves. We’d built our own family here in Helen’s Corner and it was better than I ever would’ve thought I deserved.

I blinked back tears. “You’re everything to me.”

She let out a watery laugh and nodded. “I know.”

The guys laughed as Luna moved away. They knew I was whipped. But I wasn’t the only one. Seemed to be an epidemic amongst the men in this town. We couldn’t help it. We were all crazy about our women. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“Alright, everybody. Party’s over. My mate and I’ve got some private celebrating to do.”

Luna stared at me with wide eyes. “Jason!”

I grinned. “You knew what you were getting into when you got with me, babe. Don’t act surprised now.”

Our friends laughed, even as they made their way to the door. They understood. Unless they wanted to stick around and hear the party that I was fixing to have with Luna in our bedroom, they’d better get. Luna gave me a dirty look and stomped off towards the back of the house. I just grinned. I knew that by the time I got to the bedroom, she’d be naked and waiting for me.
