Chasing Secrets (Forevermore Book 3) by Anna James (15)

Chapter Fifteen

“Wow.” Maddie sagged against Wyatt.

He chuckled. “Is that all you’ve got to say?”

She tugged him up and smiled. No one could make her feel, want, the way this man could. “‘Wow’ pretty much covers it.”

He pulled her into his arms. “I guess I’ll have to do better.”

His mouth met hers, all fire and demand, and she went under again.

Wyatt swept her into his arms, and strode with her to the couch.

“Wait.”

He stopped and stared at her as if she’d lost her mind. “Do you have a condom?” No use in making the same mistake twice. “I’m not on any birth control.” She hadn’t imagined it necessary with no man in her life until now.

“In my wallet.” He lowered her to the floor, and raced to the pile of clothes near Jacob’s portable crib.

“Hurry.” She couldn’t wait to have him.

He grabbed the packet and strode to her, a predatory smile on his handsome face. The want smoldering inside her exploded into pure, primitive need.

“God damn it.” His fingers trembled when he tried to open the package.

“Let me do it.” She snatched the condom, tore open the packet, and rolled it down over his thick, hard length.

He eased her down on the plush sofa.

When she was under him, she arched up and pressed urgently against him. “Now Wyatt. Please.” He drove into her and she gasped, stunned by the momentary flash of pain.

Wyatt stiffened and gazed into her eyes. “Are you okay?”

She nodded. Already the sting had started to dissipate. “I’m fine. I haven’t done this since before Jacob. I had to have stiches after he was born.”

He rolled off of her and gathered her into his arms.

She cried out, but not from any soreness. “You’re stopping? Now?”

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You didn’t.” Maddie eased out of his embrace, and straddled him. She glided her palms over the dark swirls of hair on his sculpted chest, pressed her lips to his nipple. He shivered. She smiled, reveling in her feminine power to drive him as crazy as he did her. “I was just surprised, that’s all.” She kissed his lips. “I want you, Wyatt. Deep inside me so I can’t tell where I stop and you begin.”

His hands shook when they gripped her hips. “Are you sure?”

“Yes. I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life.”

Wyatt lifted her as if she didn’t weigh anything, and eased her down on his hard length. He filled her completely.

“Still okay?” he croaked on a harsh intake of air.

She closed her eyes and sighed. “More than, but I need you to move.”

He raised her up. Slowly, he lowered her down again. A tiny tremor raced through her.

“Still fine?”

His thumb brushed over her most sensitive spot and the need inside her leapt to craving. “Yes, yes, but I need more. Please,” she said, begging him to sate this longing before it swallowed her up and devoured her whole.

Wyatt growled, his breaths coming in short sharp gasps as he pistoned back and forth.

“This is what I want. What I need.” Her insides tightened. “So good. So damned good.” The orgasm stole her breath and she held on as her body shuddered and writhed.

He cried out a heartbeat later, a strangled sound that heaved out pleasure. That pleasure, wild and tempestuous, seemed to rip through him like a tornado again and again until there was nothing else.

“That was amazing,” Maddie said when she could finally breathe.

“I’ll say.” Wyatt eased her off him. He stood and grinned like a Cheshire cat. “I’ll be right back.”

Maddie stared as his gorgeous, naked body moved toward the stairs. She swallowed hard. God, he really was magnificent.

When he disappeared, she rose, and ambled over to the portable crib. After donning her panties and bra, she shimmied into her jeans, and shrugged on her shirt.

Once dressed, Maddie focused her attention on Jacob. “My sweet angel.” Leaning over, she brushed a curl away from his forehead, and watched the steady rise and fall of his chest as he slept. “It’s been a heck of a week, little one.” So much had happened over the past few days. Her mind whirled at how much her life, and Jacob’s, had changed. For the better, she hoped. There you go again. Looking for trouble where none existed. God, why couldn’t she let herself be happy?

Wyatt returned, tugged on his jeans and shirt, and sauntered over. He placed a quick kiss on her lips, then headed for the door.

Maddie froze, and the walls seemed to close in on her. No, no, no. Stop jumping to conclusions. Be happy, remember? She dragged in some much needed air. “Where are you going?”

“Home. I’ve got an early meeting in the morning with my operations manager and I—”

“You’re leaving?”

He turned to her, and his brows furrowed. “Yes. I told you—”

A cold icy weight settled in her chest. Her stomach plummeted, and heart kicked hard against her ribcage. “So that’s it? Wham, bam, thank you, ma’am, and off you go?”

The color drained from Wyatt’s face. He stood ramrod straight and stared at her as if she’d condemned him to hell.

Damn it, damn it, damn it. What did he expect from her? Okay, he’d never stayed the night with her before, not once, but things were different now. At least they were supposed to be.

God, she didn’t want to wake each morning and reach for him only to find his side of the bed empty. Didn’t want him to disappear in the night and wonder when, or even if, she’d see him again. Been there, done that, not going through it again. And why should she? Maddie Scott-Smith wasn’t some object men could discard when they were through with her. She was worth more. Deserved a heck of a lot better. There had to be some level of commitment between them. How could they be a family without it?

“I, ah.” Wyatt dragged an unsteady hand through his already disheveled hair. His gaze flickered to her, and then to the door.

Maddie couldn’t breathe. Ohgod, ohgod, ohgod. Why had she believed this time would be different?

“You want me to spend the night?” Wyatt couldn’t wrap his head around the notion. Had never once stuck around after the sex was done. Not with anyone.

Maddie stared at the floor. “You act as if,” her breath hitched, “it’s a fate worse than death.”

“No.” No woman had ever wanted him to stay. Most of the time they’d leave, or told him to. Except for Maddie. She’d never asked him to go. She’d never asked him to stay either. Damn it. He strode to her, tilted her chin up, and waited until her gaze settled on him. She wore the same devastated expression on her face, she had earlier. Oh hell. “I thought that’s what you wanted.” No, he’d assumed as much, even after what they’d just shared, and wanted to get the hell outta Dodge before she sent him packing.

She closed her eyes and shook her head. “Not at all.”

Her eyes opened and what he saw in those fathomless baby blues rocked him to the core. Passion and desire, yes, but there was something more. Something compelling and intense. Something primal, but at the same time soothed. Something that touched him deep inside and made everything perfect. And maybe… “Okay. I’ll stay.”

A slow smile formed on her beautiful face. “You will?

“Yes.”

Maddie launched herself at him. He caught her in his arms and whirled her around.

She planted soft kisses all over his face.

Wyatt threw his head back and laughed, and boy did it feel good. Better than good. It felt great, and right, and heaven help him, he never, ever wanted to let her go.

Holy fucking shit. He was in love. With Maddie. Christ. How in the hell had he let that happen? He couldn’t do the love and commitment thing. Could he?
