Amira and Holden

“Amira! I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Holden burst through the door leading to the roof of the building.

She spun around to face him. For the first time, he noticed the amulet she wore around her neck. It was the Eye of Horus.

“Have you?” Her voice seemed different. The icy cold wind howled as it whipped through the air.

“What the fuck are you doing up here?” Holden pulled his jacket around him as he allowed the heavy door to slam behind him.

“Just getting some fresh air. I come up here often.” She walked towards him. Holden froze as she came closer. Her eyes looked darker as her hand fluttered up to her amulet.

“Amira, I know what you did. You framed Jax Paulson.”

She stared at him a moment giving him a look so filled with hate he wanted to disappear. He watched as the woman he loved faded behind that awful mask of hate.

“Really? You think so?”

“I know so, Amira. And everyone else is going to know too. I sent the tampered evidence to the lieutenant.”

Amira’s face went ashen.

“No, you didn’t. You wouldn’t do that to me. It would destroy my career.”

Holden sighed. He held out his hand to her.

“I wish I didn’t have to. I love you, Amira, but I can’t set back and allow you to destroy an innocent man.”

She laughed bitterly.

“So you destroy me? Don’t you realize Jax has to die so that I can get the U? Once he dies, it becomes mine. It’s everything my family has wanted for thousands of years. My mother died trying to get the U back.”

Holden shook his head sadly.

“I’m sorry, Amira. Don’t talk to me about losing family you know what I’ve been through. There were other ways you could achieve your goals.”

“No, there isn’t! He has to die for me to get the U. There is no other way.”

Holden noticed her hand twitching as it dove inside her pocket.

“Going to prison isn’t dying.”

She laughed again as her hand grabbed something in her jacket.

“It is when someone on the inside is working to get you killed. Once he gets to prison, he won’t last a week.” She snarled.

Before Holden could react, Amira drew her gun. She pointed it at him.

“Amira! What the fuck? I love you.” He stepped back from her.

“Tell me, Holden, should I believe you? Did you really tell the lieutenant?”

He nodded.

“Yes, I did. And the D.A. Jax will be released tonight. It’s over, Amira.”

Her face twisted with rage then tears began to coarse down her cheeks.

“Then, I can’t….I can’t…” She turned the gun on herself pointing it at her temple.

“No, Amira! NO! It doesn’t have to be this way. Come on, I’ll stand by you every step of the way. I still love you no matter what you’ve done. We can work through this.” Holden thought of his sister hanging from the pipe in the basement. He couldn’t lose yet another person he loved.

“It’s too late for me,” she whispered.

As her finger cocked the gun, Holden rushed forward to wrestle the gun from her. Seizing her wrist, he easily took the gun from her and threw it to the ground. Amira screamed as he attempted to hold her to him.

“I hate you!” She raged as she broke free from him racing towards the gun. She snatched it up and fired it at him.

The bullet grazed his cheek as he raced towards the other end of the roof. He glanced down at the street below. There was no place for him to go.

“Looks like your time’s up, Holden.” Amira attempted to fire the gun again. As it jammed, she tossed it to the ground running towards him. In the nick of time, Holden moved out of the way and Amira found herself dangling over the edge.

Spinning around, Holden tried to grab her. She slipped and fell holding on just by the tips of her fingers.

“Amira, I’ve got you. Grab my hands.” Holden tried reaching for her. Their eyes met briefly and for a split second he caught a glimpse of the woman he’d once loved.

Her fingers slipped.

And then she was gone.
