Hades' Flame (Devils Rejects MC Book 1) by Glenna Maynard (13)

Danny

I find Sara back at our place curled up on the couch, asleep. Some chick flick is playing on the screen and there is a tub of Ben & Jerry’s melting on the coffee table. Quietly, I take her spoon from the ice cream and put it in the kitchen sink, then put what’s left of it in the freezer. I have a surprise, but don’t want to wake her. I swear she looks like an angel. All she needs is a halo on her head.

Grabbing a beer from the fridge, I then go kick back in the recliner and start channel surfing.

Every few minutes, I look back over at my wife, my sleeping beauty still not believing that she is truly mine.

I fucked up last night. I know I overreacted. Sometimes I forget how young Sara is. She has been through so much already and she handles it all with grace.

Hell, I have seen how Terror’s old lady acts when he pisses in her Cheerios. That bitch is crazy. She found out he went to the strip club a few months back and fucking cut the nipples out of all his t-shirts. She gave no damn explanation but we all got a damn good kick out of it for about a week. She hid his bank cards on him and changed the pin numbers on all their accounts to keep him from being able to buy new shirts. Sure, we could have helped the brother out, but it was funny as fuck. I snort and have a chuckle to myself thinking about it now. I’ll have to make sure I tell him to keep Amber away from Sara.

I don’t need her giving her any ideas. Amber is the queen of pranks.

One time she put cling wrap under all the toilet seats at the clubhouse. It would have been funny if it wasn’t on chili night.

I swear the prospect who had to clean that shit up hasn’t been right since and MaryAnn refuses to cook chili now, which sucks because she makes damn good chili.

Sara starts to stir.

Getting up, I go down on my knees by the couch, placing a whisper of a kiss on her lips. When I pull back she’s smiling at me.

“Hi.”

“Hey, did you enjoy your nap?”

“It was nice, but I miss my napping buddy.”

“I know you do, but he’ll be here before you know it and you’ll be begging for some alone time.” I laugh.

I get up out of the floor and take a seat next to her, putting her feet in my lap and rubbing them as she yawns.

“I have a surprise for you.”

Her brows knit together as she stares at me. “You do?”

“Yup.” I pop the P. “Look in the driveway.”

Sara hops up immediately, running to the side door that leads to the carport.

“No way!” She looks back at me. “It’s mine?”

“Paid cash for it a few hours ago.” I took the money Tiny gave me and decided to treat Sara to a new car. She’s going to need it to take CT places and if she is serious about going to college.

Cupid gave me hell today about walking out on her last night and losing my cool. I needed it. Its why he is my VP, the brother gives good council. Sara may not want another baby right now and I need to respect that and give her time to grow. She’s younger than me and not been away from the safety net of her family until now. Here I went all caveman on her ass, like she is supposed to marry me and become barefoot and pregnant within day one of marriage. It wasn’t fair or realistic of me when she is already raising my nephew as her own.

Sara needs to know that I respect her mind and her body.

Sara

I can’t believe Danny bought me a black Dodge Challenger with silver racing stripes on the hood.

“Babe, it’s too much. It must have costs a fortune.”

I grin at him as I adjust the driver seat.

“You look real upset about it,” he teases then shoots me a wink. “Nothing is too good for my girl.”

“Wanna go for a ride?” I wiggle my brows at him, itching to get on the road.

“Yeah, let’s go grab dinner.”

“I’m driving!” I shout.

“Of course you are. Just take it easy there, hotrod. Let me lock up.”

I grin and turn the key. Damn, this car purrs. I can’t resist revving the engine. The neighbors probably hate me right now, but I don’t care. I am too damn excited.

The neighborhood our mint green cottage style house is in is very quiet. Safe. Not where you’d expect a MC Prez to live. We even have a white picket fence.

Danny climbs in the passenger side. “Buckle up,” he orders me.

“Yeah, yeah.”

“Sara, you gotta take your safety seriously.”

“I know that. Calm down. Why did you get me this car if you don’t even trust me to drive it? Sheesh.” I shake my head and adjust the mirrors before backing down the driveway. “Where to?”

“Take a left at the end of the street. Then go straight until you see a sign for Billy’s BBQ.”

I follow Danny’s directions and we end up at a rib place. I’m not big on ribs but I won’t complain. There is no way I can protest when he just bought me a freaking badass new car. I knew I was going to get something but never in my wildest dreams did I think he’d buy me this car. I thought maybe a Chevy Malibu, but not a flipping Challenger.

Danny laces his fingers with mine as we walk into the restaurant.

The hostess leads us to a booth then leaves our silverware and menus on the table. I notice she puts them on opposite sides like she expects me to sit away from my man. I don’t think so. I slide in first and Danny scoots in, putting one of his arms around me, while sharing his menu with me.

“What’s good here?”

“I’m getting a rib dinner with fries. You’d probably enjoy the pulled pork sandwich.”

“Okay, I’ll have that with a side of fries and for my drink a Pepsi.”

A woman who looks to be around thirty comes to take our order and when she sees me with Danny, I don’t miss the frown that crosses her face.

“You want your usual, darlin’?” She winks at Danny. Winks at him like I am not even sitting her wearing his damn ring on my finger.

Bitch.

She doesn’t even ask me for my order. Danny has to give it to her.

When she walks away she is shaking her big fat ass like she is doing it just for Danny. My husband must be blind because he doesn’t even seem to notice. His full attention is on me.

“Do you want your usual, darlin’,” I mock.

“What’s that about?” He tugs on a strand of my hair.

“Ugh. Seriously. Does she wait on you a lot or something?”

He rolls his shoulder. “I guess. I come here twice a week.”

“Is the food what draws you in or the service,” I hiss.

“Back up from crazy town, woman. I come here because they have damn good ribs. And you haven’t been here to cook for me. I just wanted to take you out. Don’t be this way. You know I only have eyes for you.”

“I do know that, Danny, but I don’t think she does.” I point out after she brings out our food.

“You’re silly, baby. Ain’t nobody ever gonna make me ever even think about stepping out on you. I have all I will ever want and more with you.”

“I know that, I do. But if she winks at you again…” I hold up my fork and my knife. “I can’t be held responsible when I gouge out her eyes.”

Danny laughs, but I’m not playing. I will cut a bitch if she tries to make a pass at my man.

It doesn’t escape my notice that when she asks if we’d like dessert Danny orders a hot fudge cake and he is sure to tell her we are celebrating our honeymoon.  I can’t stop the smirk I flash at her as she eyes my ring finger.

“I am such a lucky girl,” I squeal and kiss his cheek. I know it is petty, but this bitch had it coming.
