“Do you love her, Alec?” The words were so soft and he wanted to tell her what she wanted to hear but he also wanted to tell the truth.
“I thought I did at one time. I loved her for saving me from a future that had a short life span but in the end it wasn’t real and I was wrong for doing what I did to her.”
“Are you going to tell me what you did?” she asked.
“I owe it to talk to her about it first.” This was the part he wanted to tell True because he didn’t want her to hear it from anyone else. “We are going out to lunch tomorrow.”
“What?”
“I wanted to tell you that before you asked anything about it. I could tell that you already knew she was there and although I don’t want to keep anything from you I’m not able to tell you the whole story yet.”
The light of understanding dimmed considerably and he knew that he was going to have to get the information he sought from Joni as fast as possible. He didn’t want to open any doors without closing and locking the ones behind him. “Just give me a little more time, True.”
She turned away from him and settled into her pillow. “I’ve given you my whole life, Alec. I don’t know that I want to wait anymore.”
