Powerless (Power Series Book 1) by Lauren Cooper (23)

Spill the beans” Becca ambushes me as soon as I walk past her desk, pulling my coat and scarf away.

“Excuse me?” I say continuing to walk into my office.

“Don’t you ‘Excuse me ‘me!! You look like you’ve had a new lease of life injected into you!” I can’t help the smirk that grows across my cheeks. I slink back into my coat.

“Shall we go for a coffee?” I ask, not wanting the entire office to hear this conversation. Eyeing me warily she smiles before rushing to grab her coat.

Reaching the coffee shop on the corner of the street, we sit in the window and wait for the waitress to bring our drinks. I shrug out of my coat and drape it across the back of the vintage wooden chair. I don’t know why we don’t come here more often, it’s cute.

“Amelia” Becca’s voice snaps my gaze back to her. Okay I might have been avoiding looking her way.

“What?” I ask quietly as I twiddle with my thumbs on the table. I know Becca can read me like a book, and I know she already knows something is going on. She has this creepy radar that lets her know when there’s juicy gossip to be had. Weird.

“Seriously?” she crosses her arms across her chest and raises her eyebrows.

“Okay. Fine. I had sex” I blurt out. I might as well, she’ll find out sooner or later, and will only hound me in the process.

“I knew it!” she snickers as she leans in closer.

“So, come on, who is he? What was he like?”

“Why do you need to know so much?”

“Because. Tell me” she places her hands on the table in front of her while I fiddle with the small vase filled with dainty plastic daisies.

“It was amazing” I whisper, a small smile spreads across my face.

“Yeah?” she questions, smiling back at me with genuine affection. I melt into her friendliness and spill.

“It was. I haven’t felt those butterflies for so long Bec” I slouch slightly as the weight of carrying this whole Liam thing on my shoulders floats away.

“Who was it?” she furrows her brow as I bite the inside of my cheek.

“Liam”

“Amelia Bellucci!” she almost shouts, and I glance around the café making sure she didn’t draw anyone’s attention. Luckily all eyes that flicked our way quickly look away. I widen my eyes at her to tell her silently to shut up!

“How was he? I can’t believe you slept with him! I mean I can, you know I expected you to on Saturday, but still! Come on I need the details!”

“I’m not giving you details!” I hiss as the waitress comes and places our skinny cappuccinos on the table.

“Thank you” I smile up at her before glancing at Becca again.

“He was amazing” I say quietly before bringing my coffee to my lips. Becca stays quiet, eyeing me from the opposite side.

“Fine, stop looking at me like that” I huff, placing my mug back on the table.

“He was without a doubt the best sex I have ever had. He was kind, and he blew my mind” I widen my eyes to exaggerate my point and Becca giggles. I feel like a teenager talking to her best friend about her first kiss.

“He stayed the night…” I start but Becca cuts me off.

“What? He stayed? At your place?”

“Yeah?”

“Wow” she rolls her lips and glances out the window briefly before coming back to me.

“What?” I take another sip of my coffee, damn that’s good.

“They don’t usually stay the night, Mia. Are you sure this is a one-time thing?”

“Well, no. He said he’d speak to me later” I shrug it off. I enjoyed last night. Okay, more than enjoyed. I loved it, and I don’t want to taint the memory by worrying about what we are to each other. He could be a ship passing in the night and that would be ok. Wouldn’t it?

“Okay. As long as you’re okay with that? What was he like this morning?” Becca takes a sip of her coffee, successfully putting an end to my ever-wandering thoughts.

I chew my lip as I remember the amazing breakfast orgasm he gave me and Becca gasps, bringing me back to the present.

“You had morning sex?!” she accuses.

“This is so much worse than what I imagined” she shakes her head before placing it on her flat palm.

“What are you talking about?” I narrow my eyes at her. I thought she wanted me to do this? Not that I regret doing it, I’m still a little sore. I’ll be damned if that doesn’t turn me on.

“Mia. Guys don’t stick around for morning sex if they aren’t interested. Where did he sleep?”

I start to see where she’s going with this and I glance out of the window. Condensation has risen up the glass, making it hard to see outside.

“In my bed” I say quietly before finishing off my coffee in one gulp. If it isn’t coffee, it’s wine. I need both. Or a whiskey.

“Fuck Amelia”

I glance at her, she knows not to call me that.

“Sorry. I just…I thought you didn’t want anything serious?”

“I don’t. We fucked and we both enjoyed it. So, what if he stayed over? It doesn’t mean anything. I was shocked myself, but he did, and I can’t undo it now. Stop over analyzing everything.” I blurt, and she goes quiet. I decide to forgo telling her about him saying ‘you’re mine’ knowing full well she’ll launch into another lecture.

“Okay. I’m sorry. I just want you to be happy, and just take it easy” she says finally before finishing off her own drink.

“I will”

“Have you heard anything from the bitch?”

“I had a letter a couple of days ago, and another one yesterday. Same old crap. I threw it” I reply as I shrug on my coat.

“I really think you need to go the police”

“Bec, I will. But not now okay?”

She nods before getting her own coat and we head back to the office. I can hardly concentrate, after Becca reaffirmed my concerns with Liam. I don’t want a relationship. I can’t have one, not now anyway. By the end of the day, I came to the conclusion that Becca is just being a typical romantic. Liam and I are adults and we can fuck around if we want to. We aren’t exclusive. Done. Lock away the key on any possible romantic relations with Liam Hadleigh. We’ll just use each other until we get bored, that’s how these things go.
