Stakeout (A Stalker Novel Book 1) by Karen Raines, Brittany Crowley (10)

Colby

“So, I’ve decided that your toilet is way better than mine.”

“Marcus, I swear to fucking god if you’re talking to me from the shitter again…”

“Chill man, I’m just fucking with you,” the bastard laughs down the phone. “I’m actually in your bed… with your mom.”

“Fuck you, I’ll call Cross instead…”

“No wait,” Marcus chuckles. “I’m in the office. Jesus, when did you grow a vagina?”

“I think it was on the plane…” I groan and flump back onto the bed.

The annoying thrum of the Mayor’s wife’s breathing as she takes an afternoon nap filters through the cabana over the audio feed and it takes great restraint on my behalf not to walk over there and throttle her. Seriously, if this is what the Mayor has to put up with, I don’t blame him for wanting to divorce the bitch. Clearly that’s what he is aiming for. The woman wasn’t lacking and her paid for chest was worth a second look but damn. If her whinny voice didn’t kill your erection, her fucking snoring did the trick.

“Is it that bad?”

I rub a hand down my face and curse myself for not shaving earlier. “She’s fucking killing me smalls.”

“Riding your balls huh? Oh, my bad,” the fucker laughs when I let out a pained groan. “Is the issue that she isn’t riding your balls?”

“I fucking hate you.”

“Yeah yeah, that’s not what you said when I had you bent over the hood of my car.”

I hear gagging in the background before a deep voice shouts, “You need fucking therapy dude.”

“Don’t deny me Cross, your ass is next!” he yells out. I have to hold the phone away from my ear but shit was that funny.

“Focus! I need you to run some ID’s. You can go shit digging in Cross’s ass later man.”

Marcus laughs heartily but I can hear his fingers taping against the keys as he gets the right screens up in front of him. “How many?”

“Eight in total, including Gomez obviously. He’s the only member from the usual detail. The only other member I recognized was Mal Conner.”

“Really? He isn’t usually a guard… kinda low level to be protecting the Mayor’s nearest and dearest.”

That right there is why we work so well together. Mal Conner was a rock, a drop and leave throwaway grunt worker on the payroll that was easily replaceable. I had never seen him on this type of assignment and honestly, had I not been tailing him in another case a few months back, he wouldn’t have been on my radar at all. He’s a small, wiry man in his late twenties that looks like he could do with a few hot meals. That and the fact that he’s as thick as they come… yeah, none of this is making sense.

“Okay, kick the images through and I’ll run them through the usual databases. Should take an hour or so. What else do you need?”

Briella to spread her legs and let me pump my cock into her for the next few hours, that’s what I fucking need. No way was I voicing that, Marcus would give me shit for years. So instead I bring him up to speed on what little intel we have to go on so far and watch the live feeds on the screens in front of me. Not once did I think about the sassy woman I was desperate to get my hands on.

I’m full of shit.

I am so fucked.

I remember being a kid and watching all the cop shows on TV. How they all made stakeouts seem so cool and dangerous. What they didn’t show you (and why would they?) were the endless hours of mind numbing boredom. The lazy bitch was still snoring her head off and the security hadn’t done anything more than piss (seven times total), wank (three times total, two of which were at the same time and ended up in a spurting contest, I shit you not) and my personal favorite, take it in turns to do a perimeter walk of the small cabin, all in the name of spying on the topless woman sunbathing on a small strip of private beach way over yonder.

Briella’s been gone nearly two hours and if it wasn’t for the pissy replies to my texts every ten minutes, I’d be worried. I’m on the verge of falling into a coma when the action starts. A figure starts towards the cabana and although he looks as if he’s going to continue down the path, at the last minute he diverts off towards the bugged hut.

He’s tall, probably around six feet and has a swagger that only comes from money or confidence. Or both. At first glance, you would think he was in his early twenties but as his face came into focus, you can see the lines on his face that tell a different tale. This guy is forty at least and looks after himself.

He greets the guys on the veranda and although a few of them look wary, Gomez shakes his hand as if he were expected.

“Well, well, well, who do we have here?” I take a still from the footage and kick it through to Marcus. Whoever the new player is, we need to make him now. I haven’t seen this guy before and that worries me. He doesn’t look Mob related but then, they have fingers in a lot of pies.

“I’m assuming everything is going to plan?” The man asks Gomez quietly.

“We’re on schedule, I don’t anticipate any problems,” Gomez replies smoothly.

The man looks through the window and gives a small shake of his head. The look of obvious distaste on his face says a thousand words.

“Not a fan of the bimbo huh,” I mumble to myself as the men light cigarettes and talk about the ‘pretty scenery’. Something’s amiss here but they aren’t giving anything away. Who the fuck is this guy?

After a few more inane conversations, he turns on his heel and saunters back the way he came without a backward glance. Odd doesn’t even begin to cover it but I don’t miss the look of relief on Gomez’s face once the man is out of sight.

My phone pings, jarring me out of the situation and I lunge for the stupid piece of crap that is now crooning Taylor Swift around the room. Marcus is so going to die.

“Now I couldn’t help but notice you’ve put on a few pounds so tell me,” Briella whisper yells on the other end. “Do I need to find a plus size store or will XXXL be okay?”

“That’s just my cock baby.”

“Oh, my bad,” she laughs. “I hit the kids section for your tighty whiteys.”

“If the size of my package is in any doubt I’ll be sure to remind you when you get back Bri.”

She chuckles… I don’t. I’m dead serious. My ever-present boner is back with a vengeance just hearing her voice. This shit is getting out of control and I don’t like it.

“Anything to report?”

Back to business. “There’s a new player at the table. You gonna be long?”

“Just paying now, I’ll be back in twenty minutes tops.”

“What was that? You’re gonna be on top in twenty minutes? Well. If you insist…”

“Hanging up now…”

I laugh even as the call drops and I’m left holding it to the side of my face like a desperate school girl. Dammit, she knows I hate it when she does that.

I settle back against the headboard and watch the still sleeping woman. Whatever she has gotten herself into, it’s far more than just an affair. Does she know that or is she just a pawn in a game she didn’t even know she was playing? Either way, I have a feeling she’s going to get a whole lot more than she’d bargained for.
