Queen's Guard (Shifter Royalty Trilogy Book 2) by S. Dalambakis (5)

Callyn

I feel horrible about the way I acted with Max. I know I can’t help it if the girl touched him, but all these feeling are new to me. I sort of felt them before, but now, it’s worse. I always liked how they smelled, but now, ugh, their scents call to me. It felt like something snapped into place over the last couple days. When I got a whiff of their scent, I instantly knew that they were mine. Now, I understand how they felt this whole time. Luckily, they’re here to help me navigate my new life as a shifter. Can I be considered a shifter if I haven’t shifted yet? Ugh, why does my life have to be so confusing?

Speaking of being confused, we still haven’t talked about the whole Kelsey vision thing yet. I don't know if I want to hear their thoughts on that, because something tells me I’m not going to like the answer. I sigh.

“As much as I don’t want to do this, we still need to address our other issue. Kelsey.”

“I’ll grab Lucian and Zeke, you fill Max in on what he missed.” Graydon turns and walks back into the kitchen, and I summarize what happened after gym. By the time I’m done, all the boys are in the living room.

“Shit, what do you think this means?” Max questions. We all look to Lucian.

He exhales. “I don’t know. I don’t know anyone else who can do that or has done that. I think this question is better left to my grandfather. If you can, I think you all should stick around until he comes home. It shouldn’t be much longer now.”

He was right. No more than an hour later Elder Harris comes strolling through the front door. I swear I have yet to see him in anything but his elder robes. He waste no time getting right to the point. So for the umpteenth time this day, I explained what happen when Kelsey touched my necklace.

“Interesting. It seems like Kelsey maybe a prophetess. Only time will tell. Now, I need to make it a point to talk to her family and see if this has been happening or if it’s a current thing,” Elder Harris says.

“Um, okay. Someone want to explain what a prophetess is supposed to do, and what if Kelsey becomes a problem? We didn’t want anyone knowing what I am for obvious reasons, but what if she goes and blabs her mouth to everyone? What are we going to do then?” I question.

“A prophetess is a person who could see bits and pieces, or small moments of time in the future. The prophetess was always in close confidence with the queen. There hasn’t been one in 200 years. Kelsey, if she is, would be the first that we have heard of in that time frame. I don’t remember seeing in any written records of this being a trait of her family. I also haven't seen or heard of any prophetess being able to see moments of time in the past. This would be a first.

“As for her saying anything, there is only so much that we can do it prevent this from happening. I will go and have a talk with her and her family and try to make them see reason. Chances are she already told someone and them someone else. Who knows how many people know now. I know you boys talked about training Callyn, I think you should start tomorrow. I would rather you be prepared, than caught unaware. I’m also going to suggest starting that protective detail you discussed as well. Now, has anything else happened that I should know about?”

I take a deep breath before I explain about the noise I made during class. Lucian picks up where I left off with his idea. Max and I join in with input. Elder Harris looks over at me.

“Do you think you could make the sound now? It doesn’t have to be the same sound as the one from earlier, but any noise.”

“I can try.” I don’t want to make the same sound as I did earlier. It was loud and high pitched. Instead, I thought of all the times the boys have made me feel safe and loved. I feel a rumble in my chest. I didn’t notice it early, but feeling it now, it was there then. I close my eyes and part my lips and this soft melodic song comes out. It sounds so beautiful. I don’t want to stop, but I do. When I open my eyes again, the boys have all moved closer.

“Callie, that was… that was beautiful.” You can hear the shock in Zeke’s voice.

“I don’t know about you guys, but when she was singing, I felt her call out to me. I felt that deep in my bones,” Lucian states. I blush. I don’t know what to say.

“I felt that too,” Graydon says. I look over at my Max. He is just staring at me wide-eyed, nodding his head yes.

“I felt the need to be near you, touch you. I do anyways but this was different.” At this point we all look to Elder Harris for an answer. He is just staring at me mouth agape.

“I’m sorry. Please forgive me. I have never heard the song of a phoenix before. That was quite elegant Ms. Silvers. If you don’t mind me asking, what were you thinking about?”

“My mates. I was thinking of how I feel when I’m with them.” He nods his head.

“I don’t think I can tell you for certain, but it seems like the sound of your song may depend on your mood. I think that since the boys are your mates, they will also be affected by your song. It will help them gage what you need. The bond is only going to strengthen as time goes on. If I were a betting man, that necklace is helping you. That necklace is helping bring out the magic. The times are changing. I suggest you all get ready for it. I need to go and speak with the Taylor family before it gets too late.”

Just as quickly as Elder Harris came, he went. This just leaves me with more questions than answers. I awkwardly look around the room. I don't know what to say.

“Um, you guys cool?” Yeah, because that was the thing to say.

“We’re fine Callyn. I have to agree with my grandfather. Earlier, I could feel you were angry. I may not have known the reason, but I could feel it. Just a moment ago, I could feel your joy and love. This is new to all of us, and I’m sure we are going to find out a lot of stuff about ourselves and this bond as we go. But for now we should focus on training you.” Lucian turns to look at Zeke, “You should start tomorrow. I know we were supposed to start today, but with everything that has happened, I thinks it’s best if we wait one more day. We’ll start with the basics. Graydon, you should message your father and see if he will have an empty room we can use, and what time we should come. We’ll all take you home tonight. As for the classes you have when none of us are there, wait for us and someone will be there to walk to your next class. If anyone says anything, try and deflect or avoid answering all together. Everyone should be on the lookout. Eyes and ears open.”

Well, damn. Now, he is making me nervous. Is this really all necessary? I thought I would have more time, but just my luck, I don’t. I’m not ready for any of this. I’m so not ready.
