Havoc by Alexis Noelle (8)

Chapter Ten

Chrissy

“Not really sure how to feel about it

Something in the way you move

Makes me feel like I can't live without you

It takes me all the way

I want you to stay” - Rihanna

I wake up when I hear the faint sound of my phone ringing. Walking into the living room I see that it’s my mom. “Ugh, it’s too early for you.” I hit the decline button. Grabbing a hair tie I jump when the sound of my phone ringing fills the quiet room again. “Jesus.” I grab the phone knowing that this harassment won’t stop till I answer. “Hello, mother.”

“Christina, did you decline my call?” Her shrill voice sounds from the other end.

“No, it was a total accident. What’s up?” I press the speaker button so I can throw my hair up as she is rattling on.

“I need to know who you are bringing to your cousin’s wedding. It’s very rude to not respond fully, or at all in your case.”

“Well, I didn’t respond because I don’t want to go.”

“You are in the wedding!” Her outrage is almost laughable.

“Please, she only picked me because you made a case for your pitiful spinster daughter. If I wasn’t there the only reason people would notice is because they couldn’t talk about me.” Sad, but completely true with my family.

“That is enough. I will not listen to this anymore. Now do you have a date or shall I arrange for one?”

Neither of those options are good for me. I can’t have her setting me up for two reasons; I’m with Rock, and I would probably end up punching the douchebag in the face by the end of the night.

“She’ll have a date.” I hear from behind me. Shit! I totally forgot he was here. I turn to him wide eyed and see that he’s already wearing his pissed off face.

“Excuse me? Is someone there with you, Christina?”

“Yea, mom, I’ll see you on Saturday.” I quickly hang up the phone and turn back to Rock.

“Got something to tell me?” His arms cross and my eyes can’t help but get mesmerized by the way his biceps flex. “Eyes up here,” he says with a laugh.

“I have to go to a wedding. I don’t even want to go. I don’t want a date. This is not up for discussion.” I walk to the kitchen to start the coffeepot but he catches my hip.

“We are going to a wedding. You will have a date. This is not up for discussion. I need to go to the club. I’ll see you later.” He plants a kiss on my lips and is out the door before I can say anything else.

Goddamit.

My phone rings again and I throw it across the room knowing that it’s once again my mother. I have to go get that damn dress today and I don’t need any more aggravation. My cousin, Charlotte, is the kind of bitch who makes her bridesmaids look ass ugly just so no one looks better than her. She’s also giving us all the fat face updo where your hair is pulled so tight into a bun at the back of your head that in all these pictures most of us will probably look bald.

A knock sounds at my door. “Sorry, did you forget something you chauvinistic pigheaded ape mother—” I open the door to see Megan standing there.

“I’m guessing you thought I was Rock?”

“I think pregnancy is making you smarter.” I walk into my room and grab my purse and the phone I threw across the room.

“What’s up?”

“Short version. My mom called, bugged me about the wedding. Rock heard, he’s coming. She’s losing her mind, and I’m ready to crawl under the covers and never come out.” I head for the door as I try to ignore her laughing in the background.

“Hate to say it but I told you so,” she says in almost a singsong voice.

“The bitch is raging hard today so watch it preggers.” Her hands go up in surrender as she tries to hold in more laughter.

We drive to the bridal store so that I can try on the dress from hell after they altered it. My mother is lucky she paid for this crap because I would have backed out as soon as I saw it and the price tag.

“Have fun!” Megan calls as she sits down in one of the chairs.

The saleswoman is helping me put this thing on. Once I turn and look in the mirror both of our faces drop. My mom had sent me a picture of the dress and had given the shop my measurements. This is worse than I could have imagined. It’s Pepto-Bismol pink, with big tulle sleeves. The tulle then wraps around the bodice until it gets to the waist and basically pukes everywhere.

“Come out!” I hear Megan call.

“Not a chance in hell.”

“Seriously? You have to wear this in front of a couple hundred people Sunday.” She is almost whining and I know I’ll eventually show her. I open the dressing room door and have to basically kick the thing just to walk.

Megan’s face drops as I walk out and stand on the little podium. “It’s super cute.”

“Fuck you. I look like the human incarnation of a unicorn shitting glitter.”

She bursts out laughing and it has to be a good minute before she stops.

“I cannot believe I seriously have to wear this shit. Charlotte is an evil bitch.” The saleswoman’s eyes widen as she looks at me. “Oh, please don’t pretend like you think this is cute. Just FYI, you may want to tell the buyer for this store that the 80s are dead and gone.” I go back into the dressing room half considering ripping the damn thing so I have an excuse to not wear it and stay home.

Leaving the shop my phone rings and I look down to see my mother has called for the tenth time since she heard Rock’s voice this morning. “Yes,” I say the irritation obvious in my voice.

“Christina Evanson, you have been ignoring my calls all morning. Now I want to know why and I want to know who that man is that said he would be your date.” Her demanding entitled bitchy tone sends me over the edge and I can’t stop my mouth.

“I ignore your calls all the time mother and that was my biker boyfriend. I’m turning my phone off. See you on Saturday.” We get in my car and Megan is looking at me shocked. “I know. I need a goddamn drink.” I look at her then her stomach. “You suck as a best friend.”
