His New Roommate : Stepbrother Standalone Romance by Vanessa Kinney (14)

Lily

Long Distance Kiss

“H-hello.”

“Yes, how can I help you?” The receptionist asked.

“It’s my first day on the job-”

“Oh! You must be Lillian.” The receptionist bounced up and stuck out her hand waiting for me to shake it. “I’m Megan.”

I shook her hand.

“Nice, to meet you. You can call me Lily.” I was so nervous; I didn't even know what to ask her. “So-umm where do I go?”

“Mr. Prime said you can sit in the waiting room,” Megan pointed at the chair behind me. “He’ll come for you when he is ready.”

“Thank you,” I sat down.

I took one more look around the office. I had butterflies in my stomach. Still feels like home. I gave myself a smile knowing that this was real life. That this was happening. It felt almost too good to be true.

“Miss Han.” The man who interviewed me addressed Megan.

He looked over at me surprised that I was here.

“Who is that?” He loudly whispered to Megan.

I pulled out my phone and pretended I couldn’t hear their conversation. I know I shouldn’t be eavesdropping but he seemed angry.

“That’s, Miss. Banner, the new employee.” His eyebrow arched as if he remembered.

“Oh. Okay. What happened to the document I sent you?” His attitude was snappy.

“I contacted everyone on the list and no one replied except for Miss. Banner.” Megan voice started to break.

The man turned his back toward me trying to hide his facial expressions. “Not even Kevin?” He sighed. “You mean to tell me. No one. Answered. There were five people ahead of her.”

“I-I called them and sent them an email, but no reply. And if they did reply, it was a wrong number. I’m sorry.” Megan was not having a good day.

“Ohh, Miss. Banner. What a pleasure to see you face to face!” Mr. Prime barged in and greeted me with a hug.

This was very unprofessional, but I liked it. He was a lot shorter then I was expecting him to be.

“Hello.” I was sweating bullets.

“Follow me and we’ll get you all set up with the paperwork.”

Mr. Prime was a very chirpy old man.

“What do you mean wrong number?” The man growled at Megan.

He had seemed so nice when he was interviewing me. I guess it was all fake.

“You’ll probably only have half a day today.” Mr. Prime told me.

I followed him up the stairs. He was dressed like a leprechaun. He was wearing a pastel yellow bow tie, a white button-down shirt, bright green pants and finished his outfit off with a pair of pointed brown shoes.

His white beard wasn’t helping his look either.

We went over to his office, which was primarily green.

“Wow. You really enjoy… green?”

“Yes! How could you tell.” He gave me an old man chuckle. “I think it’s the best color for me to get my brain rolling around with new ideas.”

I chuckled. “Well you must be doing something right.”

“Okay.” He clapped. He placed three packets in front of me. “This is for your benefits. This is for taxes and payment information. And this is the employee handbook.”

Those are some hefty packets.

“Did you bring the documents I asked?”

“Yes. There right here.” I grabbed a folder from my purse containing my transcript, resume, passport, ID’s and all the fun stuff you need for applying to a new job.

“Great! So, our plan today is to…” He pulled out a small paper from his messy table. “Fill out the papers. Go over the handbook. Take a tour. Introduce you to the other employees. And show you to your desk.”

“Okay. Great let’s begin!” I jumped with excitement.

It’s happening.

* * *

“Sorry about the long day. I guess we lost track of time.” Mr. Prime said.

We took one more lap around the empty office. Everyone had already left and it was just Mr. Prime, the receptionist and me.

“No need to be sorry. I had a fun day.”

“Well the real fun begins tomorrow. Do you have your schedule for the projects I assigned you?”

“Yes, I do.” I patted my purse. “Can I ask you a question, Mr. Prime?”

“Yes. Go ahead.” He gave me a friendly grandpa kind of smile.

“Why do you insist on doing all the paperwork and tours and even the schedules. I mean, you’re the CEO?”

“Because I created this company and I want to get to know my workers. Sure, I could have sent you over to Chad in HR and he could have done the paperwork and Megan could have given you the tour.”

He stopped.

“But why? Because I want to treat my employees as though they were family. This is the family I get to choose. I how choose to represent my family name in the design world.”

He started to chuckle. “Also, if I got the wrong vibe from you I could have just taken back the job. I’ve done it a few times and I couldn’t be happier. But-you know what?” He looked my way. “I have a good feeling about you, Lillian.”

“Thank you, sir.” I smiled at him.

We stopped at the door and he gave me another hug.

Be safe.”

I was about to head out of the door when Megan’s emotionless face caught my eye.

I walked towards her, feeling a little bit bad about the whole situation this morning.

“Are you okay?”

“Oh, yeah.” She gave me a fake smile. “I’m just tired.”

I knew she was lying, but I didn’t want to force anything out of her. We barely knew each other.

“Okay. Well I’ll see you tomorrow.” I headed toward the door.

I checked my phone and I had 15 messages from Nate.

What the fuck!

I skimmed them. Most of them were questions about my job or when I was coming home.

My phone buzzed.

I have a surprise for you. -Nate.

Oh. A surprise.

My mind went to a dirty place. It had been about a week since we had done anything physical. I barely even kissed him on the weekend since Samuel and Mike stayed over Saturday. Then yesterday, Nate was so busy I barely got to see him.

My period also just ended so I would really love to relieve some stress tonight. Maybe that was the surprise. A stress-free kind of night. I bit my lip thinking about his perfect chiseled body. When I see him, I’m going to rip off his clothes and attack him.

“This is Washington.” The train conductor muttered into the mic.

I headed toward the building feeling a little bit nervous about tonight. Although we’d had sex, and it felt right. There was still a side of me that had this feeling that something was going to go wrong. But each time I ignored it.

BING!

The elevator screamed and I jumped a little. I don’t think I’m ever get used to it. I scrambled through in my purse trying to find my key. I heard snickering coming from the other side of the front door.

Nate?”

Where is my key?

“Can you open the door?”

“Yeah, sure. One second.”

I heard some footsteps scattering around the floor along with some more snickering. Nate opened the door wearing his button-down t-shirt and jeans. I wanted to fuck him so badly. I bit my lip and inched toward him.

SURPRISE!!!”

I let out a little yelp.

“Mom? Mickey?”

My mom came running toward me. “It’s so nice to see you sweetheart. It’s been too long.” She gave me a tight embrace and a kiss on the cheek.

“Hello, Lily.” Mickey gave me a tight hug.

“Are you surprised?” My mom looked at me with glee.

“Ohh- Yes! Why are you here?”

“To congratulate you on your job and wish you a happy belated graduation!!!” She gave me another hug.

Both Mom and Mickey had missed my graduation since they had an emergency at the bakery. It hadn’t been a big deal at the time, but it felt good to hear her congratulations. I looked over at Nate and back at my mom and Mickey.

“Nate scheduled a train ride for us yesterday to come over and celebrate your first day of the job and your graduation.” My mom jumped.

“Yeah, after I told dad about your job he insisted on coming over.” Nate chuckled.

I smiled at Nate, turning pink. I was so lucky to have him in my life.

“What about the bakery?” I was still in shocked that my mom was here.

“We closed it for today and tomorrow.”

“Wait, how long are you guys staying?” I questioned her. I got a little worried that they might overstay their welcome.

“We’re leaving tomorrow night after Mexican food.” Mickey smiled blissfully.

Mickey and Nate were both the same when it came to food.

“Dinner is almost done. Maybe like 15-20 minutes.” Nate clapped. “Dad. Holly. You can sit at the table and Lily can help set it up.”

“No. No, don’t worry.” My mom said. “I can set up the table. Lily go ahead and change.”

I walked past Mickey who was sitting at the table reading something off his phone.

My room was clean. Did Nate clean it? Or was it my mom?

I closed my door and tried to find something to wear. So much for sexy time with Nate. I guess I can wear something tight for him. I wore my tight t-shirt dress that covered my tits. I always felt weird showing off my cleavage in from of my mom and Mickey. I looked in the mirror. I feel sexy.

I heard Nate’s voice echo in my head.

She is perfect.

My cheeks turned hot. I felt like a schoolgirl who found out her crush likes her back. I stepped out and Nate looked at me. He gave me a smile that made me want to melt into his arms. My mom, on the other hand, had something on her mind. She was making her judgmental face.

“Honey, isn’t that dress a little too tight?” My mom had no filter when it came to my wardrobe.

I felt embarrassed that I chose this dress. Nate’s nostril flared. He was trying to hold his tongue and not say anything to Holly.

Mickey looked over at me. “What are you talking about Holly? She is a grown woman she can wear what she wants.” He smiled at me reassuringly.

“Thanks, Mickey.”

“Work it, sweetie.” He snapped his fingers before looking back at his phone.

My god he was so lame.

“I agree. She looks good.” Nate was eyeing me down. Giving me his I-want-to-fuck-you-eyes.

My mom placed the forks on the table, “I just think a bigger size would have fit better.”

I rolled my eyes and let out a sigh. Sure, I might not look like a model, but who does? I was an average girl.

“Thanks, Mom.” I said sarcastically.

“The food will be done in about ten minutes.” Nate checked the oven again.

“I’m going to step into the ladies’ room. I’ll be right back.” My mom shuffled to Nate’s bathroom.

I walked over to Nate who was watching the oven.

“What are you making?”

“Lasagna. Grandma’s recipe mixed with my perfection.”

I leaned closer to him and laid my head against his arm. “Thanks.” I whispered.

“For?” He wrapped his arm around me.

“Backing me up. You know with my mom.”

“Oh,” He chuckled. “Like I said. You’re perfect.”

He gave me a tight squeeze then kissed his index and middle finger and placed them on my lips. It was a long distance kiss. Cute.

“So, Mexican food tomorrow?” I asked

“Yep. I’m going to take Dad to the computer store tomorrow since I’ll be home and I think your mom wants to go the art museum or the Field by herself.”

“Seems like something my mom wants to do.”

“You have such a fancy shower, Nate. Where does the water come from?” My mom came out of the bathroom giggling.

“Yeah. It’s a waterfall shower so the water comes from the holes at the top of the ceiling.”

My mom sat next to Mickey, “Oh that’s really cool. I think last time I was here, I used the bathroom in Lily’s room.’

She paused and looked at Nate and me. His arm was still around me.

“I’m happy to see you guys are getting along.”

“I’m still surprised that Nate suggested you come and live with him.” Mickey laughed and closed his phone.

Nate took his arm away and checked on the lasagna.

What?

“I thought you guys were the ones that suggested I come live here?” I asked.

I looked over at Nate and he was dead silent, as if he didn’t want me to know any of this.

“No.” My mom snorted.

“He was the one that came up with the plan, which was a surprise.” Mickey said.

“I’m glad he suggested it. Now you guys can finally get to know each other as brother and sister.” My mom cheered.

I let out a sharp laugh. “Yep. Yeah. You're right.” I humored my mom.

Nate let out a chuckle.

“I don’t see this boy in months and then out of the blue he wants to offer you a room.” Mickey sighed. “You know, when Nate went off to college and got his fancy job I didn’t see him for 6 years. 6 YEARS! He looked like a completely different person!”

I could tell that Mickey was still hurt by this.

“I told you I was busy, Dad.” Nate mumbled, still feeling guilty.

“It’s okay. It’s okay. After the dry spell. I got to see Nate a few times a year.”

What the fuck.

“A few times a year? When?” I looked over at Nate.

What?

I didn’t see him for 11 years, but he came to visit. A few times a year! Wait. I was 17 when Nate came back home.

Why didn’t I meet him?

“Well, you know honey. Your last semester of high school was busy. You had prom, graduation, dance and whatever else you had on your plate.” My mom said.

“No. No. No. Remember Nate didn’t like Lily.” Mickey whispered to my mom.

Nate didn’t like me?

I felt heavy and stiff. I looked over at him. He was staring at the oven as if it was going to make it go faster.

“He would always ask ahead of time where Lily was so he wouldn’t meet her-”

“Oh yeah!” My mom’s memories started to jog.

Nate was avoiding me? Why would he come visit, but never want to see me?

“That’s why it was a surprise when he asked for you to come here.” Mickey continued.

“Okay!” Nate said in an angry tone. “The food is ready!”

I knew he didn’t want this conversation to happen. He placed the lasagna next to some other sides and took his seat next to me. I could feel his uneasiness.

Mom and Mickey dove into the food. They both let out a satisfied moan.

“Hmm. I swear if you weren’t so damn good at coding you would be an even greater chef!” Mickey took another forkful of lasagna.

“Thanks, Dad.” Nate took a piece of the lasagna and placed it on my plate.

It looked so delicious. But I wasn’t hungry. Nate took another piece and placed it on his plate. Neither of us touched the food. Nate placed his hand on my thigh, giving it a gentle squeeze. Almost like it was an apology. I was upset with Nate, but I didn’t want him to move his hand.

I looked at Mickey who was going in for seconds.

“So why did Nate schedule his trips around me? Well, around not seeing me.”

Nate glared at me. He didn't expect me to ask that question. I knew Mickey knew everything about Nate.

“Something about you aren’t related or you’re not his real sister. So there was no point of seeing you and getting to know you.” My mom talked with food in her mouth.

Same thing that Samuel told me. I felt hurt, but I somewhat understood where it was coming from.

“I think it was because he had a little crush on you.” Mickey joked.

“Mickey!” My mom sassed.

“Okay. Let’s eat.” I said.

I wanted to avoid this whole conversation as if it never happened.

All that matters is that Nate likes me now.

***

We all finished our food and Nate was the first one to start packing the leftovers.

“Why don’t you guys head off to bed and Nate and I will clean up.” I suggested.

“Well, don’t mind if we do.” Mickey jumped out of his seat and headed toward Nate's room. I guess they're sleeping in Nate’s room.

My mom came toward me and kissed me on the cheek, “Goodnight, Sweetie.”

Night, Mom.”

She walked away, but not before she said goodnight to Nate too. I stood next to Nate drying off the dishes he finished washing. I wanted to bring up the conversation but I didn’t know how. Maybe I can just play it off like I’m joking. I cleared my throat.

“I guess I was a brat when I was younger.” I let out a fake giggle.

“Can we not talk about it?” Nate asked.

“Why not? You obviously had a problem with me.” I tried to keep my voice down.

Nate stopped washing the dishes. “Because I didn’t want to pretend like you were family. You weren’t a brat or anything. I just didn’t want to pretend.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean what I said.” He went back to the dishes.

“Pretend to be brother and sister? To actually get to know each other and build a relationship like a family.”

He dropped his plate in the sink. He turned me around and picked me up. Placing me on the countertop.

“Do you really think I could do this right now?” He passionately kissed me and bit my lower lip.

I wrapped my legs around him as both his hands tightly gripped my ass.

He pulled me closer to him. Our bodies rubbing against each other.

“Do you really think I could FUCK you. Right here. Right now.” He growled. “If we actually considered each other family. If you were closer to your big brother.” He growled over me. “Not getting close to you was the best thing I’ve ever done.”

I was too turned on by his animalistic side to say anything.

Exactly.”

Nate’s bedroom door opened.

Fuck. I jumped off the sink and Nate and I went back to doing the dishes.

“I forgot my phone.” Mickey walked over to the dining table and grabbed his phone. “Goodnight, kids.”

Goodnight.”

Goodnight, Pops

As soon as we heard the door close, we both snickered.

“That was close.” Nate laughed. “Hey, why don’t you go to sleep? I’ll finish the dishes. Get some rest for work.”

“Yeah, okay thanks.”

I put away the last few plates.

“Hey, did you clean my room today?”

“Yes! It was so messy.”

I chuckled. He wasn’t wrong.

“Well since we’re breaking ground rules now. Maybe you can come over in a few minutes and break another rule.”

I walked over to him and grabbed his thigh and moved my hand toward his cock. “But you have to be quiet. My brother doesn’t allow guys over. And my mom is in the next room.” I grabbed his hard cock and winked.

I kissed my index and middle finger and placed my fingers on his lips.

I left him with a long-distance kiss and a little taste.
