Dodge, Bounty Hunters Book Three: Diamonds aren't the only things women want - sometimes they want revenge. by PJ Fiala (40)

I’d never met you

Laughing, she threw her head back and enjoyed the way it felt to laugh. Megan and Skye sat across the table from her as Megan continued to tell the story she'd been entertaining them with for the past twenty minutes. They'd started doing girls’ night, once a month about six months ago and she'd be lying if she said she didn't look forward to them. She'd never had girlfriends growing up. Their life was secretive given what her father did for a living. Plus she wasn't a Barbie and Ken girl. She liked shooting guns and wrestling boys to the ground to show them how strong she was. But, Megan needed friends because she was newer to the area and all alone up on that damned mountain. Except for Ford and Shelby, their daughter, but she needed girls to chat with about anything. Skye was from the area and because she and Skye were practically neighbors, it seemed natural for these women to join together and become friends. They shared so much. Their husbands, Megan and Skye's, worked in the same company as Dodge and Jax. She couldn’t have secrets with them because they knew everything anyway.

But, as nice as it was to have girls' night out, and friends, she always found herself kind of missing Dodge while she was out. She'd grown to love him so damned much these past six months. It was mind boggling how much.

Skye tapped her forefinger on top of the back of Jax's hand, which lay on the table top. "Stop thinking about Dodge again. You're so damned lovesick you make us look bad."

Giggling she responded. "I'm not lovesick. And what makes you think I'm thinking about him?"

Megan laughed. "You're kidding, right? You get this far-off dreamy look in your eyes and you disappear into your head."

"Shut up."

"You shut up." Skye retorted. "Next time, I'll take your picture so you can see your lovesick face."

Both of her friends laughed and she joined in. Then a feeling fell over her, a feeling you get when you think someone is watching you. Slowly panning the Saturday night crowd at the Copper Cup, she looked over at the bar and there he sat. Watching her. He titled his glass in her direction and winked.

Standing she grabbed her glass and slowly walked toward the bar, keeping the handsome man in her sight. Three women hovered behind him, giggling and trying to get his attention, but she was thrilled to see his eyes stayed focused on hers.

Setting her glass on the top of the bar and standing at a 45-degree angle to him, she glanced over at the sexy man staring at her.

"Little Mama, you have no idea what you're getting into here."

She giggled. "You have no idea who I am or what I'm capable of, Tarzan."

He chuckled as he leaned in, his eyes bore into hers. "I think I do, Little Mama."

She inhaled deeply and the fresh scent of Dodge floated to her nostrils and she had to fight not to close her eyes and enjoy it. He interrupted her sensual thoughts, "As a matter of fact, I know what you’re capable of so well, I know without a doubt that I want to experience it for the rest of my life. How about you, Little Mama? You want to spend your life with Tarzan? Ring, vows and all? Maybe a baby or two?"

Her eyes widened and her heart hammered in her chest so fast and furious she thought she'd pass out. Did he...? Holy crap! The sincere look in his eyes told her he meant it. Those green orbs so sexy and so very special to her. He reached across the corner of the bar and took her left hand in his left hand. With his right hand he pulled an incredible ring from his shirt pocket and slid it slowly onto her ring finger. The enormous pink diamond winked at her in it's simple setting then it began to swim and blur as tears sprang to her eyes.

"Really?"

He scoffed at her question but squeezed her hand, his thumb gently rubbing soothing strokes across the back of it. "I love you, Jax. I love you more than I ever dreamed I could love again. I love you more than I'll ever love anyone."

"Holy shit." Her voice cut off as her throat froze mid-sentence. He swiped at the tear that slid down her cheek and she saw him swallow hard; she realized that he was nervous about her answer. "Yes. Holy shit, yes."

Cheers went up behind her, but she didn't bother looking. Instead she jumped into his waiting arms and locked her lips onto his with an intensity she never had before. It didn't matter, he kissed her right back. When the crowd began to catcall she pulled away and once again looked him in the eyes. "I've never been proposed to before."

"I know. That's one of the things I love about you."

"That's stupid."

"No it's not. It's cool. You waited for me."

Someone grabbed her shoulders, spun her around, and then wrapped her into a big bear-hug. Her brother was here. Her brain didn't quite register what that meant. Then he said close to her ear. "Congratulations, Jacqueline. Mama's going to be so excited."

He passed her on to her female friends who were squealing with delight while grabbing at her hand to see the ring and congratulating her and Dodge. Then she saw their whole team standing around as they shook Dodge's hand, cheered them on, and bore witness to this momentous occasion.

After she'd been hugged by everyone she turned to Dodge, "You asked everyone to come here and watch?"

"No, I asked Josh for your hand in marriage and he told everyone that I was going to ask you. I hoped you'd say yes and then we'd need to celebrate, so I told them to stop by later. Apparently they all wanted to be here as witnesses. A few of them didn't think you'd say yes. You decide who that might be."

“Idiots.” She laughed.

Looking down at her ring, the color of the diamond dawned on her and her heart swelled. "Is this...?"

"It is. It's part of the pink diamond you retrieved from Georgia. Guardwell’s client allowed me to buy it from them with their blessing. I couldn't think of anything more appropriate."

"You know, Tarzan, you're pretty romantic."

"I never thought so, but then again, I'd never met you."

She kissed his lips softly and wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling him flush to her. The instant his arms wrapped around her, her heart sang. This was perfect and so much the life she never dreamed she'd have.

"And, I'd never met you."

Gaige stepped up to them and waved to the group to huddle. "Just got a call. We've got a new job and everyone needs to be at headquarters at 06:00.

Hawk chuckled and though he seldom said two words, he raised his glass as he toasted, "Here's to Dodge and Jax and a long happy life together."
