Dodge, Bounty Hunters Book Three: Diamonds aren't the only things women want - sometimes they want revenge. by PJ Fiala (14)

They didn’t even like each other

Okay, he seemed decent enough. They listened to Gaige's information and every once in a while, he'd nod his head. She wanted so badly to ask him what he thought about the intel. It would be good to get into their heads and see how they worked things. They being the bounty hunters.

Josh pulled the Beast into a restaurant parking lot, they'd only been driving for an hour and they were heading Southwest so not too far from home but strange land just the same. Dodge hopped from the SUV and she turned and followed Wyatt out of his side. Fighting the urge to look back and see the expression on Dodge's face. There was no reason to think he'd be upset. Why would he? But what she did notice was that his warmth was gone. She'd begun to enjoy his arm brushing against hers and she liked the smell of his aftershave or cologne or whatever it was. He smelled manly, much like he had last night. At the thought of how he'd held her tightly to his chest, her nipples pebbled, and she shook her head to shake the thoughts loose. She didn't need to go there.

At the restaurant door Josh and Ford entered and Dodge stood at the door and waited. When she approached he grinned at her and she grinned back.

He looked up at Wyatt, "Say what you will, my mama raised a good boy."

Wyatt shook his head and elbowed Dodge lightly in the gut but said nothing else, they'd probably save that for later. She almost wished she could be a fly on the wall to see what, if anything, the new guys would say about her. It was stupid to think that a discussion wouldn't take place. She was the only woman in a man's world and there would no doubt be a discussion. Comments. Something.

Shaking those thoughts from her head she decided not to get paranoid and go with the flow. These guys were nothing more than the other guys she'd worked with for so long. Actually the only teammate she'd ever had sex with was Hawk. Damned man was sexy as fuck. But they both knew the next morning it was a mistake and they'd never repeated it again. That was more than four years ago now. But there were times when she was lonely and she wondered if they could be friends with benefits. She hadn't had an honest to goodness boyfriend since she was in the Army. But once her boyfriend got out of the military, they wrote emails back and forth a bit and then those came less frequently then not at all. Trouble was, she wasn't all that sad about it, either. She never pursued him to find out what happened. Last year, she found out through friends that he had gotten married and despite a little pang in her heart, she was happy for him. She did stalk his social media to see what his wife looked like. Again, a little pang in her heart when she saw the blond beauty he’d married and how they looked at each other. He'd never looked at her like that. But then, she hadn't looked at him as if he was the only man on earth, either. That says something, doesn't it?

They found a circular booth and slid in, she scooted in behind Josh and Wyatt scooted in next to her. That meant Ford and Dodge were across the table from her and she'd no doubt lock eyes with Dodge once or twice during lunch, but that didn't mean anything.

A waitress with a frown came around, set water glasses on the table, not bothering to place them in front of any of them, dropped some menus on the table and said, "I'll be back in a moment, folks."

Not far enough south to get that southern hospitality. Ford moved the glasses to each of them saying, "Megan would have a fit if she saw that."

Josh replied, "Megan's your wife?"

"Yes, and when I met her she was a waitress and a damned good one at that. Before she was a waitress, she was a nurse. She can't stand shitty service and she's a bit outspoken about it. "

Dodge laughed. "That's for damned sure. I've seen her chew out terrible wait staff more than once."

Both men chuckled again and Jax thought she'd like to meet Megan.

Josh leaned forward, forearms on the table. "So, we don't talk about our missions in public, but what I want to do is discuss your ideas when we get back on the road. We need to call in and report back in two hours and I want to be able to give Gaige some sort of a plan."

Everyone nodded and Jax took that opportunity to mull over the information they'd heard on the way here. In her mind, she wanted to storm Mags’s restaurant and demand to see that piece of shit Santarino, but of course that would get them nowhere and they weren't even sure what Mags did for Mangus. Though they suspected she was the stopping point for the border entry and she probably held the jewels and stolen art for a while until the heat was off, then repackaged it and sent it on to Mangus. That's what they needed to find out because she needed to go down, too. If she was working for Mangus, she was part of the operation, it all needed to end. And then there were the bounty hunters and their pink diamond.

"Okay, what'll ya have?" Their weary waitress barked.

Each of them ordered and then the conversation once again turned to cars and trucks. Something she was used to but grew tired of just the same. She wasn't a girly girl, but she didn't want to talk non-stop about vehicles and certainly not about their latest conquests. Luckily they usually tried to wait until she was out of the room before discussing anything like that, but she'd heard plenty over time and it mostly made her sad. She'd been with men before. Not a ton, but a few. But, she didn't want to be a one-night-stand girl. She wasn't looking for a husband either, but, what the hell, she didn't really know what she wanted in that department. So, it was just better to ignore that part of her mind and move on to taking someone down or taking out some aggression on the gun range. Truth be told, she didn't have any female friends, though Mrs. James and Kylie were nice enough and she'd sit and chat with them when they were cooking. But, she was a tomboy and talking about nail color and shoes was not her thing. No ma'am.

"Jax?"

She started when she realized she was being spoken to. "What?"

Dodge grinned at her, then repeated what he'd just asked her. "I asked you what year your Jeep and your bike are."

"Oh, sorry. 2017 is my Nightrod. The last year Harley made them. My Jeep is brand new this year. They're wicked aren't they?"

"They are. Nice job with them." Dodge took a drink of his water at that moment and she tamped down the idea that maybe he was a little interested in her. He couldn't be, they didn't even like each other.
