Valentina met Adam at a restaurant near his hotel. They enjoyed the warm, sunny weather with brunch and drinks outside on the sidewalk. Valentina changed from her typical mimosa to straight champagne today. Adam drank an extra spicy Bloody Mary.

“So, are you all set for Rwanda?” Adam asked.

“It’s funny you should ask. I was just thinking yesterday about all the things I have left to do. I sent ESAG my paperwork and photos, so they are working on my visa,” she ticked off her fingers as she talked. “I went to the travel clinic and had all my shots. I think the big thing left is to make sure I have everything to pack. I’m missing a few things like a converter for my plugs and maybe some clothes.”

“Internet and electricity will be spotty, even in town, so be ready for that. It will be hot, so try to bring clothes that keep you cool but covered. It’s a pretty conservative country. It goes without saying to use bottled water for everything, even brushing your teeth.”

“Yes, that will be a new thing for me.”

Adam paid the bill, and they set off on a walk around the block. Funny how in just a few dates, some things had already become comfortable: walking around the city holding hands, enjoying the sights, ordering dessert to share together. Valentina wondered how hard it would be to go back to her regular life once Adam left for Rwanda. Or would she even want to?

They had a few days left. Friday, Adam would get on a plane. Valentina would follow a week later, but just for a short visit. As much as she was trying to enjoy the moment, it was all going by too fast for her.

As if pulled by a magnet, Adam and Valentina ended up in front of the Topaz Hotel. Adam looked up and laughed. Valentina smiled, but as soon as she looked at Adam, that smile turned into something much more heated. Adam leaned in and kissed her passionately. She returned the feeling, adding fuel to the flames.

They broke the kiss long enough to walk through the revolving door, through the lobby, and into the elevator. Once the doors slid shut, Adam’s hands were in her hair, his lips hot upon hers. She clung to his waist, pulling his body close to hers. She could feel his erection through their clothes and pressed against him harder. He groaned as she began to work his shirt out of his jeans in the back.

Thank goodness the elevator had a bell that sounded once it arrived at the floor or Adam and Valentina would have found themselves naked on the floor of the elevator. Once he had his boots off, he turned around to move her back on the bed. She reached for his belt and the button of his jeans.

He pulled her into his arms and they lay close, limbs intertwined. Neither said a word as they quietly enjoyed the moment together, not knowing how many more they would have before the time came.

Eventually, Valentina and Adam rose from bed and decided to venture outside of the hotel to get dinner at a restaurant close by. After the brunch they shared that morning, she couldn’t help but notice how little time they had left together. She was more aware than ever how short the days were before Adam left for Rwanda. Neither one seemed ready to bring up what would happen to their relationship after he left. Is that what they would call it, a relationship? Or was this still just a fun fling while Adam was on vacation?

After they returned to Adam’s room in the Topaz hotel, they made love again. Slower and sweeter. Enjoying the moment and taking the time to learn every inch of each other’s bodies.

“Hey, I’ve got a crazy idea.” She sat up and faced him. “Why don’t you come stay with me for the last few days? I know it seems sudden, but we are spending time together every day. I’m driving back and forth, and you could save a couple of days of hotel cost by crashing with me.”

“You don’t think that would be too much for you?” he asked.

“No, I think it would work out well. I’m not taking off these next few days—although I wish I were—because I have two weeks of vacation planned for Rwanda coming up. This way, I can see more of you before and after work.”

“In that case, I accept,” Adam said. “I’ll work it out with the hotel tomorrow morning and take a cab over. I can meet you after work at your place.”

“Perfect,” said Valentina and with the decision made, she tucked back into the nook of his arm. They spent the rest of the evening together, alternating between making love and sleeping.
