Chapter Five
The next morning, Courtney woke with a little extra spring in her step. She had waited so to spend tie alone with Dr. Wright, she could hardly contain herself. When she reached the kitchen for coffee, Katherine was already waiting for her.
“You left the party early last night, I was worried about you,” said Katherine as she poured a cup for Courtney
“Oh, yeah, I just wasn’t really feeling up for a party,” replied Courtney
Katherine looked at her suspiciously, “is there anything you want to share with me maybe?”
Courtney looked at her, “what are you talking about?”
Katherine set down her cup of coffee but didn’t look up from where it was at on the counter, “I saw you and Dr. Wright in the office, Courtney.”
Courtney cast her eyes down now, she didn’t know what to say to her friend. She couldn’t tell Katherine why she wanted the doctor so bad. No one would understand how she felt about him, not even her best friend.
“I just, I just want to see him once,” was all she could say to Katherine
“So you’re going to see him again?” she asked
Courtney nodded her head, unable to say anything.
“I think it’s a bad idea, he’s got a girlfriend Courtney, and a powerful one at that. You don’t know the Middleton’s, they are a vicious family of people,” said Katherine
“Katherine, it’s not like that okay? I’m not scared of her or her family,” said Courtney
“I still think it’s a bad idea,” muttered Katherine
“Well I didn’t ask your opinion now did I?” snapped Courtney
Katherine looked at her in surprise. Courtney wasn’t the type of friend to talk to people with so much hostility in her voice. Immediately, Courtney regretted her words but she wasn’t ready to admit it to Katherine yet. Instead she just muttered that she needed to go out for a bit. She grabbed her purse and keys and dashed for the door. Without another word to her best friend, Courtney hoped into her car and started driving.
What she had told Katherine was true. She needed to run some errands. Her car had made it from college down to Texas but Courtney wasn't sure how much life it had in it. When she was finishing up her studies, men would frequently stop to admire the fire engine red car. She didn't know much about it beyond the fact that her mother had owned it for as long as she could remember. It was the only reason she held onto the vintage piece of machinery.
Katherine had given her the number for an ‘incredibly handsome’ mechanic down the road from the apartment. When she pulled up to the garage, she quickly gasped. Katherine hadn't been lying. The man who walked out, covered in grease with his tanned muscles shining with sweat was something that should have been on the cover of a magazine. She felt the now telltale sign of her body quickening in response to his youthful good looks.
“Hi there, can I help you?” He said with an innocent smile
I can think of a few ways you could, she thought to herself, “Yeah, um, I just need a tune up I think and an oil change.”
“That's a fine car you've got there,” he said, admiring the Cadillac
She smiled, “Thank you, it was my mothers.”
“She had good taste,” he answered
Courtney had to stop herself from getting sucked into his captivating gaze. She knew that he wasn’t looking at the car any longer. It felt good to be admired, but she had to remind herself of why she was there.
“So can you do it?” she asked him again
“I sure can, do you want to wait? It shouldn’t take too long,” he said
She smiled and nodded her head and followed him into the shop. Just as she was heading inside, her phone began to vibrate. When she saw it was Katherine, she looked back at the mechanic to see that he was busy already with her car. She stepped away from him and answered the phone.
“Hey,” she said, “I am so sorry about how things ended.”
“I know me too. I just don’t want you to get hurt,” replied Katherine
“I know. I’m sure that Amber Middleton is a wonderful person, but I can’t help how I feel. These things just sort of happen, you know?” responded Courtney
“Sure, listen I’ll talk to you when you get home okay?” said Katherine, a little bit distant
Courtney said her goodbyes and hung up the phone before Katherine had a chance to scold her anymore about her life choices. She turned back to the mechanic and for the first time noticed how his shaggy hair seemed to fall perfectly into his eyes.
“Listen, I couldn’t help but overhearing your conversation there,” he said
She raised an eyebrow, “oh really?”
“Sorry, I was wondering if maybe you’d like to have lunch,” he replied
“What?” she said, obviously caught off guard
“My name is Kyle; I think we may have something to talk about. How would you like to hear all about Amber Middleton?” he said with a smile
Courtney looked at him in shock, “well, I think I could probably make some time. It’s nice to meet you Kyle.”
She held out her hand and smiled at him as he took it. As soon as their hands touched, it sent a thrill of desire unlike any other she had ever felt. She watched as he closed up the shop, admiring the muscles that worked so hard to shut doors and Instantly, Courtney knew that Kyle may be throwing a wrench into her plans.
