Torpedo: A Second Chance Romance by Joanna Blake (61)

Camille

I stretched and rolled over, finding cool sheets and a note. I wasn't surprised to realize I was in Cade's hotel room, though I was surprised he'd let me rest instead of taking me again. He'd made it clear that he was going to be fucking me as much as possible, and that included mornings.

I picked up the note and read, a smile touching my lips. It was sweet of him to let me sleep in, but I wanted to say goodbye to the children. Among other things…

Thought you might need your rest Princess. I'll see you for dinner after practice tonight. Meet me there.

-Cade

I lay back, staring at the ceiling. My whole body felt good. Better than it ever had. He'd done that to me, pressing all my buttons. Playing me like an instrument.

The man was a maestro. He knew exactly what he was doing. He was by far the most talented lover I'd ever had. But it went way beyond mere skill. Or even chemistry.

It seemed like, despite all our differences, we were made for each other.

The rest of the day was a blur. I went home and changed. I went in to work at our Florida offices but I wasn't very productive. I kept daydreaming about Cade. I caught myself smiling for no reason. I smiled and nodded my way through three meetings, confusing the hell out of my staff.

How had this happened to me? I was lost. I was in love with a caveman and I'd never been happier.

I floated home and spent a little time with Uzuri. She got nervous if I wasn't around. She curled up around me and I nearly fell asleep, I was so relaxed. But I was too excited to sleep. I knew I was in for another amazing night. I shivered, wondering what Cade would want to try this time.

I showered and changed, picked out a dress I knew Cade would like. I smiled as I put on some white lace lingerie, imaging how Cade would react to it.

He'd like it, I was sure of that.

I drove my new car to the stadium, driving extra carefully. I knew I had my head in the clouds but I needed my eyes on the road. I was smiling as I got out of the car and walked towards the players' exit. I stopped, seeing a familiar swarm of scantily clad women hovering near the entrance.

The baseball groupies were nothing new, but I'd never really thought about what they were doing there. They were waiting for the guys. And they were making themselves available to them.

I started to turn away. I figured I would wait in the car instead when I heard them talking. I was close enough to hear every damn word. I froze, my stomach clenching in a nervous knot.

"I want the new one."

"The wrecker? Oh yeah, Gemma said she had him the other night."

My heart started thudding. Cade. They were talking about Cade.

"I heard he's real good between the sheets. All the girls say so."

"And big. Like, huge."

"I can't wait to find out."

The blond laughed.

"Me either."

"We can double team him."

"I'm so in!"

My hand covered my mouth as I stumbled away, choking back a sob. The other night. She'd said she'd had him the other night.

All the girls so say.

The entire time he'd been chasing me, he'd been fucking groupies on the side. Who knows how many? I closed my eyes. We hadn't been together officially yet but it still felt like a betrayal.

It felt like a warning.

The groupies weren't going away. Cade was on the verge of becoming one of the most famous men in the world. In history if I had my guess.

Women would be everywhere, begging him to take them to bed. Movie stars. Musicians. Regular women who would do anything he asked, anytime he asked it.

That's when it hit me.

I didn't stand a chance.

I climbed back into my car, staring blindly ahead of me. I was an idiot. A fool.

My cheeks grew red, remembering every thing I'd let him do to me. How eager I'd been. How gullible.

I'd let him do things no one had ever done before. No one had even dared to ask me to do those things. Or demanded that I please them the way Cade had.

And I'd fallen for it. Hook, line and sinker.

I'd fallen for him.

And now I was going to pay the price. I'd have to see him, day after day. For years. There was no way to avoid the team. And even if he got traded, there was no way to avoid the news. I would be forced to see him from a distance, and feel this betrayal over and over again.

And my own stupidity.

The worst part was, I wasn't sure it was enough to make me stop loving him.

I sat up straight, wiping my tears away. That was ridiculous. It didn't matter how I felt. I had my pride.

And pride was not going to sit by and watch him with an endless parade of women.

I had to leave. That was all. I'd leave and I'd quit working with the charity. I'd go abroad maybe. Avoid all this until my heart had healed.

When I came back I would be strong enough to ignore Cade and his travelling circus. I'd be hard inside and out. Harder than I'd been before.

I'd be a stone cold bitch.

And I'd never talk to Cade Dupree again.
