“Why did you accept to become a mail ordered bride?” the question came out of nowhere.
They had been chatting about the ranch and the work it implied, so when he changed the topic, it surprised her.
“My planet is totally destroyed. Food and medicines are very scarce, and all the people able to pay to get out have left the planet. “Not as far as I know. Kahm told me he had left the whole thing in the hands of the agency’s manager,” he admitted.

“There’s a huge difference,” she assured him. “You told me yourself that people, on Sumitera, have very little contact with people from other planets and that Selena was the first human female they got in touch with, right?” He nodded. “He wanted her, and he was forced to give her back to her husband, so he asked for a woman like her in her place.”
“That’s right,” he nodded again.
“But, instead of getting a copy of the woman he fancied, he will be getting me, a woman very different from the one he wanted. How can you not see the problem here?” her last words oozed a bit of the despair she was feeling.
“I’m sure he will be more than pleased to have you as his wife,” he assured her, closing the distance between them and stopping just a couple of steps away from her. “You’re an amazing woman.”

There was no privacy in the small cabin.
