Learning To Adapt
Getting back to the office the next day was something Liam had been looking forward to since the previous day. He was really interested in seeing how everything would turn up, especially now that he was coming up with a really grand plan.
“Good morning Liam,” the receptionist greeted as she sighted him.
He was surprised. “Wow! Daisy! Today must really be good.”
Daisy smiled. “You are looking good.”
He drew closer to her. She was a woman in her mid-forties and they both knew she was older than him. He was surprised because they had never conversed before but today, well, something must really be different. She was wearing a black and white shirt and skirt with an oversized pair of glasses fixed steadily on her nose.
“So, what is different about you?” she asked, smiling.
Liam wasn’t sure. He looked all over himself and shrugged. “I don’t know. My new haircut or the fact that I am wearing an Armani suit?”
The woman smiled. “Wow! That must be it. Why have I never noticed you before?”
“Well, now you know. Have a great day, Daisy,” he said before walking towards his office. He met Daniel at the passageway.
“Oh my God! Dude! What happened to your hair?”
Before Liam could respond, Daniel took his phone from his pocket and took his picture thrice.
“Hello to you, too,” Liam replied.
“I am getting that hair cut tomorrow. It fits you so much.”
Liam smiled. “I know, Charlotte chose it.”
Dan gasped. “So you were out with her all day, no wonder I called so many times and you didn’t pick. Is this your plan once you ditch Emily?”
Liam shook his head. “No, not my plan at all, she is just being a good friend, that’s all.”
“Well, how about we go to your office,” Dan said, taking more pictures.
“Oh man! That suit is ....wow! You went shopping as well?”
Before Liam could reply, the door to Joe’s office opened and he and Emily came out. For a while, no one spoke.
“Hello, Liam,” Joe started, breaking the silence.
“Joe,” Liam replied, and then addressed Emily who was looking lost. “Emily, beautiful morning to you both.”
Emily managed a smile. “Hi, Liam.”
“Awkwaaaard,” Daniel cooed. Finally, he followed Liam who left him to enter his office.
As they got in, Dan shut the door while Liam sat down.
“That was really awkward,” Dan said.
“Well, it wasn’t for me.”
“She looked really surprised when she saw you.”
Liam shrugged. “Why should she be surprised?”
“Well, because you are looking so damn good second day after breaking with her. That is not nice, man.”
Liam looked surprised. “What does she expect?”
“It’s normal if you at least look devastated or look normal, but better and dapper and in that suit, believe me, she will think you have been planning this for a while.”
“Well, I haven’t and even if I have, I think it’s my business.”
“Another thing is that she will know for sure that this whole break-up thing might be because you have a new love interest.”
“But I don’t”
“What about Charlotte?”
“She’s my friend dude!” Liam snapped at him.
“She made you go out for shopping and for a haircut.”
“So?”
“Well, maybe she is interested in you.”
“No, she isn’t, she just wants me to look good so that Emily might regret whatever she has been thinking or doing all this while.”
Daniel was silent. “Really?”
“Yes.”
“She really told you that?”
“Yes, she did.”
“Wow! Now I don’t understand either of you.”
Daniel sighed. “Look, man, I think you should go to your office.”
Dan shook his head. “I knew this would come soon. You always send me back to my office once I am beginning to make sense.”
“No, I always chase you out once you are making no sense.”
Liam stood up. “Well, it’s okay. I just care about you that’s all. Sam should be back from his trip today anyway.”
“Alright.”
‘Would you like to meet at his house later in the evening?”
Liam checked the time. “Well, I have to see Charlotte but...” he stopped as he saw the look on his friend’s face as soon as he mentioned ‘Charlotte.’
“Get out,” he ordered playfully.
“Well, I will, but I will be back,” Daniel said, giving him a thumb up and then turning it upside down.
Finally, Liam sighed, finally able to have the office to himself.
