After All This Time: Love or Money by Brown, Brittainy (32)

The Fix-Up

Liam closed the file and threw it among the piles like the rest that he had worked on. His headache was subsiding gradually but he still held a pack of ice to his head. He was still blank about last night and still worried about Charlotte. Just then a knock sounded on his door.

He groaned. He really hoped that Daniel wouldn’t come and make things worse than it was already.

“Come in, if it’s not Daniel.” He shouted as loudly as he could. The door opened and closed but he hadn’t looked up yet.

“Hello.”

He looked up immediately he recognized the voice and he dropped the ice on the table.

“Charlotte. Thank God. I have been so worried. What happened to your phone?”

The lady looked surprised. “Geez! Calm down. I think I left it at home.”

“Now, it’s saying switched off.”

“Yea, the battery must have run out. How are you?” she asked sitting down. “Hangover?”

“Yea,” he nodded. “So, um, I have just been so worried you know, everything about last night was totally blank and I had no idea how I got to be in my bed this morning at all.”

“Wow! You mean you don’t remember anything at all?”

He shook his head. “Not a clue. How much did I actually drink?”

Charlotte leaned back. “Well, quite a lot actually.”

“Yikes.” He groaned more. “I am so embarrassed.”

“Well, the good thing is, now I get to make fun of your drunken state,” she said, laughing.

Liam stood up and went to sit on the table, next to her.

“Well, as much as I love to talk about that, there is something I really need to know about last night.”

“Okay, what is that?”

Liam scoffed. This was difficult to ask, he had no idea how to put it. He thought of whispering it into her ears. “Do you mind if I whisper something into your ear?”

The lady looked at him as if he was crazy. “Are you serious? Is it really a huge thing?”

“Trust me, I think that’s the only way I can ask this.”

Charlotte stood up and leaned closer. “Okay tell me.”

Just as they Liam’s lips were inches away from her ear, the door flung open and there stood Emily, she looked shocked and angry at the same time.

“Seriously!” she shouted, her voice almost breaking.

Liam was surprised, he stood up. “Emily, what are you doing here?”

Emily shut her eyes and shook her head. She thought of leaving the room again but she walked further in.

“You know, you could have just told me, that you wanted out of the relationship because you met someone else. You had no right to make me feel guilty because of my work. How could you tell me I had chances on the table when you were already sleeping with someone else. You men are all the same. I wish I had known better! I wouldn’t have done this again,” with this, she turned around and walked out of the room, without closing the door behind her.

Liam was stunned and could hardly say anything.

“What the hell was that? Why would she say all those things and why did she have to do this, again?”

Charlotte was quiet.

“I am so confused. Why does she have to be angry with me?”

“Well, do you remember she saw us dancing last night?”

Liam nodded. “Of course, I remember that but she was dancing with Tom and I was dancing with you, so, why does she have to get angry. I don’t get it, did something else happen?”

Charlotte sighed. “Well, it did. That is the reason why I am here actually.”

Liam raised a brow. “Oh my God! We did it didn’t we?”

“What are you talking about?”

“We had sex last night right?”

Charlotte gagged. “Oh my God! Ew! No, we did not! How could you even talk about that!”

Liam let out a huge sigh of relief. “Well, thank God. I was thinking about that this morning. So if we didn’t what happened?”

“Well, your girlfriend found me wearing one of your shirts and..”

“What? My shirts? How, when? Did she come to my house?”

“Yea. She came last night, she was really in a bad state and I found her just when I was leaving the shower.”

Liam was more surprised. “ Oh my God! She saw you leaving my room, in my shirt?”

Charlotte nodded.

“Oh my God! She has let her imagination run wild. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I never knew you would wake up blank this morning plus I am here to explain things to you ain't I?”

He gasped and sat at the table. “Wow! Now, seeing you here. Everything makes sense.”

“So, what are you going to do?”

“I don’t know, I will explain things to her.”

“Why?”

Liam thought he heard wrong. “Why?”

“Yea. Why do you want to make things right?”

“Because I love her and for her to have come last night and this morning, I think she wants to make things better.”

“Don’t you think you deserve someone better than her?” she asked, knowing full well, that this was the chance that she had been waiting for.

Liam was confused. “What are you saying? I thought you were rooting for our relationship.”

“Yes I was but with the way she has treated you, I think she doesn’t deserve you. I deserve you. I stood by you.”

Wow! Now Liam realized that all everything Daniel had been saying was true. Why didn’t he see this all this while? Of course, Charlotte was clearly interested in him and he had spent all this time leading her on. What has he done?

He stood up and moved to her.

“Charlotte, I am sorry I led you to believe in something that would never happen. I see you as my friend, my closest friend actually. I am so sorry that you saw it as something else.”

Charlotte had never felt so embarrassed in her life. She had been so stupid to have thought that he would be willing to leave his girlfriend.

“What is so special about her Liam?”

Liam smiled. “So many things Charlotte, you won’t even understand if I start telling you.”

“Wow! I understand and I am not angry maybe jealous a little but it’s okay. I guess I had my chance, right?”

Liam nodded.

“Well, don’t worry, I will help you get her back, everything will be just fine. What do you need me to do?”

“Please, can you go explain everything that happened to her? Because if I do, she might not listen to me?”

Charlotte nodded, grabbing her bag. “Where is her office?”
