After All This Time: Love or Money by Brown, Brittainy (25)

Charlotte’s Secret

“You should have seen her look, I thought she was having a stroke.”

Charlotte laughed. “Well, that was the plan. I’m sure she will be racking her head on what is actually going on with you.”

Liam shrugged. “Well, I think this new look really fits me, Char, it’s been a while I had so much attention.”

She smiled, and lifted a hand to brush his hair slightly. “Yea, it really fits you.”

The two were in Liam’s living room, each holding a large bowl of popcorn as they jested and laughed at the same time.

“So you said you were offered a promotion?” he asked, taking a handful of popcorn to his mouth.

“Well, yea, I think it was about time actually.”

“Wow! That is wonderful. I think we should go out and celebrate.”

Charlotte laughed, ”no, no, I don’t think that is necessary.”

Liam was already standing up. “Look, you have been a really good friend, the least I could do for you is to celebrate with you on your promotion. Give me some minutes to change.”

Charlotte smiled, watching him leave for his bedroom. When he was finally out, she leaned back comfortably, shutting her eyes. The word ‘friend’ especially when he used it was always a bummer for her. Well, of course, they were friends but, to her, he was beginning to mean more than that and she really hoped that with time, he would start seeing her be more than just a friend.

Her promotion was merely a raise in her salary and it was not really a big deal but she was willing to let him have his way as long as it got her spending more time with her Ex whom she clearly still had feelings for.

She stood up as she sighted one of Emily’s picture frames on the table. She was standing by the poolside in a white gown and a large hat and she looked really happy. Liam was behind her, they seemed to be laughing at something.

She stood up and walked towards the picture, holding it in her hand. The woman in the picture never knew how lucky she was to have such a man in her life and now she just let him go. Well, she was glad, Emily was going to increase her chances of Charlotte having her man back.

“You like the picture?” Liam asked suddenly, startling her. “Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”

She smiled, putting the picture back. “It’s okay. I got carried away; the picture is really beautiful actually.”

“It was taken on one of our trips last month. Think it was our last trip together actually.”

“You both are looking very happy together in the picture.”

“Yea,” he replied, now taking the picture and looking at it. “It was the weekend I got the ring and till today I have never found the right time to give her, and now that we are taking a break, I don’t think the time will come.”

“Well, maybe it’s a warning for you to understand her perfectly before popping the question.”

“Yea, I guess I only know the good things about her and not really important things that I should know.”

“Yes. A broken relationship is always better than a broken marriage.”

“Yes, I guess you are right.”

‘So, are we ready?” she finally asked, eager to change the subject.

“Yes, we are,” he replied, picking his car keys from the table.

“Are you ready to shake that booty?”

Charlotte laughed. “What? Where exactly are you taking me?”

Liam sighed. “Well, to the club of course to have a good time. I remember how much you liked the club. You remember we used to go every Friday night.”

Charlotte looked surprised and then laughed.

“What?” Liam asked. “Don’t you like Clubs anymore?”

“Well, I do, I just didn’t know you still remembered.”

“Well, I do and I remember every night you got drunk and I always had to carry you home.”

Now they were both laughing at the memory.

“That was just once Liam, don’t exaggerate.”

“No, it wasn’t. That was about four times.”

Charlotte laughed aloud. “Anyway, those were good times.”

Liam looked surprised. “Don’t you like to dance anymore?”

“Well, we are not kids anymore, Liam but, I think it will be fun, for old time’s sake.”

Liam nodded. “Yea, it will be.”

“Out of curiosity, is this a date?” she asked, trying to hide her excitement.

Liam was surprised. “Well...I, um, well, I don’t think that two adults having fun together is a problem. We are just two adults trying to have fun.”

Charlotte nodded, with a fake smile. “Of course, that is better with the way you put it. So, shall we?”
