Nothing Special by A.E. Via (37)

Special Kind of Friendship

Day woke up and immediately felt like he was in a sauna. Holy hell. The body heat radiating off these men was unbelievable. Somehow in the middle of the night—or early in the morning, however you think of it—they’d all squished in close together.

“Fuck me,” Day groaned in a sleepy voice.

“Okay,” Ronowski answered with his eyes still closed. His voice rough and sexy. He pulled Day’s leg up on his hip and jabbed his morning wood at his navel.

“Seriously. Am I the only one that feels like this bed is the goddamn portal to Satan’s lair? It’s hot as fuck.” Day bitched and wiped at the sweat on his forehead. He pushed Ronowski off him and climbed awkwardly out the bed, kneeing God in his hip in the process.

“Leo, shut the fuck up. It’s too early for your whining,” God grumbled and turned over.

“He’s definitely not a morning person, huh?” Johnson’s voice was deep and groggy.

Ronowski turned in Johnson’s arms and began pushing his hard-on against him. Day spread out in the recliner in the corner of his room, picked up a flat album cover, and began fanning himself with it. He saw Ronowski reach back for God. God took the hint and settled in behind Ronowski while the horny man rocked back and forth between the two large men. God’s hand was on Ronowski’s hip, the muscle flexing under his palm with each move. Johnson’s hand was already working its way down to Ronowski’s cock, stroking him with purpose.

Ronowski came with a strangled cry before Day could really enjoy the show. Then Ronowski was going down south on his man, and Day was sure he’d flip over and give God the same good morning treatment after Johnson received his… so Day sat back and waited for it all to play out.

When everyone had gotten off, including Day since he’d jerked off while watching his live porno; Day told them he was going downstairs to make breakfast, since it was Monday morning and they all still had to go to work. No doubt they’d all walk into the station looking fucked-out and depleted.

Day made eggs Benedict for himself, God, and Johnson, while he made bananas-foster French toast for Ronowski, since he was informed the man was allergic to mustard seeds.

It was a little after seven when they finished breakfast. God and Johnson went in the den, drank their coffee, and watched ESPN while Day and Ronowski went back upstairs. Day loved showing off his model-car kits and his jazz collection. The men bonded with each other for another hour or so before Johnson and Ronowski had to go home and get ready for work, with a promise of hooking up for pool and beers after.

It was amazing that men could do this type of thing with each other and not make it awkward and complicated. Day and God were walking into the station and before they could even get comfortable at their desks the captain was calling them in to his office.

Day passed Ronowski at his desk on his way to the captain’s office and was surprised when the man looked up and winked at them. The man sure had come a long way.

Day and God closed the door behind them and sat in the two chairs in front of their captain’s cluttered desk.

The captain sat down and leveled a hard stare at them. “Well I’m not one to beat around the bush, so with that said; you guys are both being promoted to lieutenant.”

Day and God’s head snapped to each and back to their captain in complete shock.

The captain put his hand up to halt their questions and continued, “This has come directly from the Mayor to the police chief. The higher ups are real proud of the jobs you’ve done out on the streets, and with Hansen being taking down during an election year, it couldn’t have come at a better time.”

“Wait, are you saying this is a political-gain promotion,” God grumbled sitting up straighter.

Day rolled his eyes at God’s quick-to-bark mouth.

“Did I say that wise ass? No. If you think for a damn minute, you’d get it. Yes, it’s a re-election year and the Mayor is recognizing the best we've got and showing that he’s not taking this city’s prime assets for granted. Damn, Godfrey. When I told them I needed two good lieutenants, your names were the first they came up with.” The captain huffed. He yanked open his desk drawer and withdrew two brand-new, shiny-gold badges and slid them across the desk. God and Day took them and immediately replaced their second-grade detective badges.

“You guys might catch a little hate from some other seasoned officers. Some of these men have been here twenty years and are still third-grade. But that’s their own fault. No one can doubt how hard you guys fight out there. I’m proud to call you my lieutenants. The promotion comes with a shitload of new responsibilities while still doing what you guys do best.” The captain finally gave them a slight smile. He narrowed his eyes at them and shook his head in wonder. “In all my thirty-five years on the force, I’ve never run across two characters like you guys. I’m damn proud of you both. You’re coming up on five years in a couple weeks, that’s unheard of. Believe it or not you guys are making history in the APD. Long after you guys are gone everyone will remember you and tell stories of the dynamic duo that was God and Day.”

Day and God stood and hugged each other right there in front of their captain. Day knew what God had overcome in his life and he was beyond happy for his lover. He had his family back. His brother was looking up to him as a confidant and friend, letting God help guide his future. His mom couldn’t get enough of him and was moving closer. They even had an awesome set of friends that Day was sure would soon become invaluable to them. Everything had finally fallen into place.

“I love you, sweetheart. You saved me,” God whispered just for him.

Day hugged him tightly. “I love you too. We saved each other.” Day softly kissed his cheek.

“All right, all right. You guys can thank each other when you’re not in my office,” their captain teased them.

Day and God shook the man’s hand again.

“Let’s introduce you guys.” The captain opened his door without another word and yelled in a voice only a captain can possess, causing everyone to stop what they were doing and face him.

God and Day stood beside each other, all eyes on them, while the captain spoke.

“I’d like you all to congratulate Godfrey and Day on five years as a highly successful and respected team on the APD and welcome them as your new lieutenants!” the captain yelled.

The whole department erupted in cheers and whistles. Cops were banging on the file cabinets and rattling handcuffs, trying to make as much noise as possible. Day saw Ronowski out of the corner of his eye running up to him, he had a huge smile on his face and when he was only a couple feet from him he held his arms out and collided with Day, wrapping him in a tight hug. Day lifted the man off his feet and held him close.

Day didn’t know if Ronowski had forgotten where the hell he was but he placed a huge kiss on Day’s lips before wrapping him up tight again.

“Congratulations, gorgeous,” Ronowski said in his ear.

Ronowski pulled back and beamed at him again before moving over and hugging God. Ronowski gently fingered the word Lieutenant engraved in black lettering on God’s badge that hung from his neck when his shoulders suddenly went rigid at the silence that had enveloped the entire bullpen.

“They’re all looking at me aren’t they?” Ronowski said quietly.

God just nodded his head and cracked up.

Ronowski spun around and threw his hands up in the air like he’d been busted. “Yes, I’m gay, get over it!” he yelled and turned back to them.

“Give us some credit; we’re all detectives here, Ronowski. We figured that out years ago,” one of the forensics detectives yelled back, and everyone start cheering again.

Day was proud that Ronowski took it all in stride even though his neck and ears were beet red. Most of the faces Day saw were friendly and looked genuinely happy for them. But Day was a people watcher, and he’d definitely noticed the few that slipped out of the station with displeased glares. Day shrugged it off. He’d learned very young that you can’t please them all.

The women were coming up to them and hugging them while the men gave them strong handshakes and told them that it was a promotion well deserved. It was no secret that God and Day doubled everyone else’s record in the amount of arrests they made and had taken over one-hundred million dollars’ worth of drugs off the streets in their five years as partners.

Day and God were at their desk still feeling high from all the recognition when Seasel came over to them. She’d been on desk duty since returning two weeks ago. She still had six long months of physical therapy ahead of her before she’d be out in the field again.

“Ya know God; now that you’re my lieutenant you have the authority to select my assignments.” She winked.

“Of course I will, babe,” God told her.

Seasel’s brown eyes lit up.

“As soon as your doctor says you’re finished with therapy,” God amended.

He didn’t try to dodge the hard slaps she landed on his shoulder.

“Asshole.” She huffed and picked up God’s gold badge, inspecting it carefully when a wide smile spread across her face. “So can I call you Leu?”

“Not if you expect me to answer,” God retorted drily.

She rolled her eyes at God’s sarcasm. “You’re lucky your partner saved my life or else I wouldn’t be throwing you guys a five-year celebration party next month.”

“What party?” God asked.

“I’m not telling,” she sing-songed on her way back to her desk.

Day and God’s promotion really hadn’t hit them until they came back from lunch and there were four detectives milling around their desk.

“Hey can you guys try not to take such long lunches. I’ve been waiting for like forty-five minutes,” Detective Ross snapped at them before they could even sit back down. “I’m going to be taking my vacation in June this year instead of August like I usually do, so I put my request in your box for approval, Day. Thanks, buddy.” The chubby detective slapped him on his back and returned to his desk.

Day blinked and looked at their in-boxes, which were overflowing onto their desks, and almost spit out his coffee. “What the fucking fuck?” Day yelled.

“You’ve got to be shittin’ me.” God looked around the office but no one was paying any attention to them.

Ronowski came up to them and plopped down in God’s chair. “Hey, if you guys want the power and the big bucks… looks like you’re going to earn it.” He grinned wickedly at them.

“Ro, get the hell out of here before I do something to wipe that grin off your face.” God yanked him out of his seat.

“Promises, promises, big boy.” Ronowski laughed and took a couple steps toward his desk before turning and adding, “Oh, and lieutenants, I’m going to need one of you to question a suspect with me this afternoon. Does three work for you? Good,” he said hurriedly, not letting either one of them get a word in as he laughed. He knew they were already swamped and was obviously delighted to add to their already chaotic workload.

God had only signed off on two requests for a different partner assignments and a complaint filed by a suspect against one of their officers when the captain yelled from his office for them to go with two other detectives to perform a search and seizure across town.

Day threw his hands up in the air. “I think we are being punked. How the hell are we supposed to do all of this shit and be out in the field?”

“Fuck if I know,” God answered him, rubbing his eyes, throbbing from reading all those forms.

“Delegation, you fools.”

God and Day both looked up at the thin man standing next to their desks with his own stack of paperwork. He lifted it high and let it drop down in God’s in-box, making some of the other papers fall on the floor.

“What did you say? And pick those up, asswipe.” God pointed to the fallen papers.

The IT geek squatted and picked up the couple sheets, sliding them back on the desk. Detective Halls wasn’t a field officer; he was a computer crimes detective and an excellent hacker. The guy had like five different degrees in computer technology and a Masters in Forensic Science. He could take apart a computer blindfolded and put back together, or he could lift a usable fingerprint off a brick wall. He was a cocky sonofabitch who acted like he knew it all… which he actually did.

“I said delegation. You guys are lieutenants. That means you have sergeants, beat cops, and a whole office full of administrative officers at your disposal.” Halls reached out and plucked the paper from Day’s hand and flipped it over scanning its contents quickly before flicking it back at him. He sucked his teeth and shook his head at Day as if he was pathetic. “What type of three-star lieutenant spends hours approving vacation requests? The goddamn receptionist can input those, put a damn sticky note with a yes or no on it, and hand it off. Get it together, guys.”

Day and God sat there with their mouths open as the tactless man walked through the station with his nose held high and closed himself back in his department, that consisted of ten laboratory stations, and what looked to be fifty or so computers.

“Damn that guy is a prick,” Day muttered and started putting the papers in different stacks.

“What are you doing?” God asked.

“Delegating and then I’m getting my ass back on the streets where I belong.” Day winked.

God quickly followed suit and after thirty minutes of sorting their paperwork they efficiently moved around the station issuing orders, behaving like real lieutenants.

By the end of the day God and Day were too exhausted to go out with Ronowski and Johnson for beers and instead picked up a pizza and went home to kick back and relax. They barely had time to digest their food before they were both in bed snoring loudly.
