Nothing Special by A.E. Via (28)

Are We All Bonding Now?

Day and God were so happy their required two weeks were over that they were both dressed and getting in God’s truck three hours before they were supposed to be at work. They’d done their meetings with the shrink and even had two sessions together and she deemed them fit to return to duty.

Day had gotten a little nervous during one session when the doctor asked God how he would handle someone hurting Day now and his lover responded by jerking one side of his leather coat open and pulling his long blade from its sheathe.

“Easy, I’d cut their fucking arm off and beat the shit out of them with it,” he’d said.

But Day quickly started laughing and told the concerned doctor that his partner was just playing.

After popping God hard in his stomach, God agreed and said he was indeed joking. When the doctor went back to writing on her legal pad, God mouthed to him, “No I’m not.”

God still thought they just barely passed her requirements.

“Stop by Starbucks,” Day said without looking up from his cell phone messages.

“You drink way too much coffee, Day. I mean all day every—”

“And you fuck too much. I mean all day every day.” Day cut God off. “Do I tell you to stop? No. Instead I feed your addiction. Can’t you provide me the same courtesy?”

God laughed and swung his truck into the crowded Starbucks parking lot. He parked in the back since his truck was too big to fit in the spots in the front. While Day was in the busy shop, God pulled out Mr. Eudall’s TracFone and saw there still were no messages. God was going crazy wondering how his brother and mother were doing. He was so deep in thought he hadn’t seen Day leave the shop and get back in the truck.

Day stared at the phone, watched God tuck it back into his glove box, and speed out of the parking lot. God’s mouth was set in a firm line as his mind drifted to his last two encounters with Genesis. When he pulled into the station’s parking lot ten minutes later he shut off the engine and turned to face his man.

“I think it’s time I tell them,” God said more confidently than he felt.

Day looked him in his eyes telling him that he would support him completely. God grabbed the back of Day’s neck and pulled him to kiss him before it was time to clock in as partners.

“Love you, coffee slut.” God chuckled softly against Day’s lips.

“Love you back, sex slut.” Day licked him.

God and Day walked into the station together and their entire department started clapping, yelling, banging on their desks, and whistling loudly. They made their way through the maze of desks as many of the officers patted them on the back and shook God’s hand. The women were pulling on them and kissing their cheeks.

If God was nervous about catching some flak for being out and gay, no one in their precinct was showing it. Probably because who God was fucking was inconsequential to what was happening on the streets every day, and he was glad that he worked with a group of people that were smart enough to realize it.

After what seemed like a very long time Day and God sat down at their desks, anxious to get back to work. After the captain had finally gotten everyone to calm down they all behaved like Day and God had never been gone.

About one in the afternoon the captain called Day and God into his office with two of the city’s Assistant District Attorneys to ask them about joining in on the interrogations of some of the eighty-five dockworkers who were confirmed to have worked for Hansen. The mayor was encouraging all law-enforcement departments to keep putting the hammer down on drug dealers. Although they’d cut the head off a very large snake, it might not be long before another one took up habitation in its place. Day and God were eager to accept. Besides, Day loved keeping his interrogation skills sharp.

Once that quick meeting was over, they both headed to the break room for more coffee for Day.

Of course.

“I’m gone for only two weeks and look at this mess,” Day grumbled while wiping off the counter around his coffee maker.

God gulped his apple juice and leaned over Day to look at the nonexistent mess.

“Babe, I don’t see anything.” God propped his arm against the cabinets and watched Day huffing while taking inventory of how much coffee was left.

Day’s cup was just about done brewing and he and God were staring at each other when Ronowski and Johnson came into the break room together. Day turned and looked at them both with a ridiculous look on his face.

Johnson went to the fridge and pulled out a can of soda while Ronowski stood there fidgeting nervously. God put his hand on Day’s shoulder telling him to put the poor guy out of his misery.

“How’s Vikki doing?” Day asked Ronowski. “Have you seen her?”

When Ronowski snapped his head up Day and God both sucked in a sharp breath at the huge hickey next to his Adam's apple. Johnson stared at them from over Ronowski’s head silently asking them not to rib him.

No doubt the guy was still working on understanding and accepting his attraction to men, not to mention acting on it.

“Uhh. Yeah, I… umm… we went and saw her yesterday. She starts her PT next month so she’s doing well. She’ll be on desk duty for a while, and she’s definitely not happy about that.” Ronowski grinned shyly. “She wants to see you both… ya know… to thank you.”

Johnson stepped closer behind Ronowski and his nearness seemed to relax him, because he looked Day in his eyes.

“I wanted to say thank you too. You both were nothing short of awesome that day and everyone knows it… including me.” Ronowski stuck his hand out to Day.

Day put his coffee down, gripped Ronowski’s hand, and pulled him into his chest startling the hell out of all of them. Day slapped the young man a few times on his back before releasing him. Day smiled broadly when Ronowski turned and smiled lovingly at Johnson.

The captain walked into the room and all four of them looked at him with grins on their faces.

Captain shook his head and moved to grab a muffin.

“For fuck’s sake. What the hell is this; the champagne room now?”

“Yeah, except there’s no champagne… only shame,” Day said drily and gulped his coffee.

Ronowski laughed loudly and all heads turned to look at him. He cleared his throat quickly and tried to shrink back behind Johnson’s huge figure.

Captain came to stand in front of them. “What do you and God got planned for the fourth?”

“Nothing comes to mind,” Day responded first. “Why, what’s up?”

“Ronowski’s going to do some surveillance that he and Seasel had set up a few weeks back on a small-time meth dealer in Buckhead. Since the fourth is next week, Seasel won’t be in the field by then. So I want you and God to do the surveillance with him.”

Day snapped his fingers loudly as if a memory just hit him. “Oh shit. Did you say the fourth… uh… uh… I thought you said the fortieth,” Day stammered jokingly. “Sorry, we're completely booked.”

God popped Day in the back of the head and saw Ronowski grin from behind Johnson and raise his middle finger at Day. “And no fucking in the backseat, Day… this is going to be real surveillance going on.” Ronowski joked back.

Day couldn’t help but laugh too. God was so glad Day and Ronowski had called a truce… work was a much better place this way.

“The fourth it is, Captain,” God spoke over Day.

Day elbowed God in his gut.

“Do me a favor, Ro,” Day said calmly.

“What’s that?” Ronowski peeked around Johnson again.

“Johnson won’t be with you all the time. Remind me to kick your ass later,” Day said.

Ronowski came to stand in front of Day, looked at his watch, and smirked. “Sure, what time works for you?”

Day looked at his watch too. “Uhhh, let’s see. Is five thirty good?”

“I just remembered I’m busy at five thirty.”

“So what time can you be there?”

“I can do five thirty-five.”

“Damn, that’s cutting it close. I might be a little late, but wait on my ass whippin’.”

“Will you dumb asses shut up? Lord help us… they’ve bonded.” The captain tried to suppress his laugh. “God, how the hell do you put up with Day’s mouth?”

“I got something that’ll make him shut him up,” God said in his deep voice.

Everyone groaned and scrunched their faces up in disgust.

“We don’t want to hear that shit, God. Ugh,” the captain said while pouring his cup of coffee.

God looked at Day and saw he wasn’t the slightest bit fazed and if he knew his lover—which he most certainly did—Day would not let him get the last word.

“It’s all a mind game that I play with God. He thinks he’s shutting me up… but when he’s finished with my mouth… I start talking again.” Day winked.

“I’m leaving. I should write your asses up for sexual harassment or something.” The captain hauled ass out of the room.

Johnson and Ronowski were shaking their heads, too and telling Day he sure knew how to clear a room.

“I got to get back across town,” Johnson said then bent down to whisper something in Ronowski’s ear that made the man turn red.

God tried to pull Day away but he refused to budge. When Johnson said good-bye to them and left, Day mock whispered to Ronowski. “I told you. One good pounding is all you—”

“For fuck’s sake, Leo,” Ronowski groaned, grabbing his soda and hightailing it out of there before Day could finish his sentence.

God slapped Day’s ass, making him yelp. “You are too fucking much.”

“But you love me anyway.” Day licked his lips seductively at him.

“Goddamn right I do.”
