Chapter Nine

Liv’s Jeep rambled along the stretch of highway, taking her northwest of Chattanooga. Dunlap was a rural area and well-known shifter community. It was the first Saturday she hadn’t worked in months, and it felt odd to be outdoors instead of cooped up in the lab. Luckily, the humidity was low, and it was a beautiful sunny day for a drive. She was inspired to remove the vehicle’s top so she could enjoy the fresh air of the countryside.

As her favorite playlist blared from the speakers, Liv thought about the past few days at work. She had spent as much time with Lawson as she could without drawing unwanted attention from Jim. Avoidance was the name of the game with her boss. He wanted sexual favors from her, and she suspected he was the jealous sort, so she didn’t need him taking it out on Lawson. She recalled what happened the last time and how the beating nearly killed Lawson.

Each day she took him something different to eat so she could watch his enjoyment. The man had an insatiable appetite. And each time he groaned his pleasure her hunger grew, only it had nothing to do with food. God, how she wanted him to make noises for very different reasons.

They hadn’t shared another kiss and Liv was craving to taste him again. The way he devoured her with his possessive stare told her he felt the same, but he never acted on it. They shared picnics on his mattress and talked for hours about everything and nothing, but he never made a move.

Cassie was right. Liv was falling for Lawson. She couldn’t help it. She wanted to feel his strong arms around her again. It had been the safest place on Earth, and when he’d held her, she knew he’d always protect her. His lips against hers spoke of unfulfilled desires that she ached to experience.

And for that reason, she was risking it all, even her life, to help him in any way she could. Above all she wanted him set free to live his life to the fullest, as it should be, even if she weren’t a part of that life. No one deserved to be a prisoner, certainly not Lawson.

A blaring horn startled her back to the road, and she slammed on her brakes. Skidding to a halt at a stoplight, she barely missed a truck that had the right of way. The driver reached out from his window, showing his appreciation by way of his middle finger in the air. Heart thumping in her throat, she waved apologetically, but that garnered an onslaught of impressive profanities. In fact, she memorized a couple of phrases for future use.

Fully alert and paying close attention to the road, she made her way through the town, surprised it wasn’t busier on such a beautiful afternoon. She expected to see more people out enjoying the perfect weather. But the streets and establishments were desolate. According to GPS, she was nearing her destination, which was in the heart of downtown and she hadn’t seen a soul, except for her friend, Mr. Potty-Mouth.

Pulling off the road onto a graveled parking area, Liv stopped her Jeep and turned off the engine. Glancing to the sign in front of the rustic building, she read Scott Café, which was the name Lawson had mentioned. His family’s business. Lawson didn’t work there but his parents owned it, and his twin sisters helped run the place.

Gathering the courage to walk inside, she inspected the area. The building was quaint on the outside, and the grounds surrounding it were well kept, and inviting, and she hoped that was a good sign.

He had given her the first names of his family members, and she was hoping that would be enough to start a friendly conversation.

Lawson was unaware of her plans to visit his hometown. He was under the impression she was giving his family’s names to Bart and letting him handle the dirty work. Part of her wished she had drug Cassie along, but she was worried her friend would not only object, but keep her from going, as well.

Stepping down from the Jeep, Liv took a few deep breaths. Her heart was racing faster at the thought of this meeting than it had with her near-collision with the foul-mouthed truck driver. Sweat slicked the back of her neck, and she wiped damp palms across the sides of her jeans, trying to calm her nerves. It was now or never, she thought, making her way to the entrance of the eatery.

Stepping inside, she was greeted by a delicious aroma. It reminded her of childhood visits to her grandparents. Her grandmother was always in the kitchen cooking or baking something divine. It smelled of home and comfort and love. Whenever she would ask her grandmother why her meals tasted so much better than anyone else’s, she always replied, because I make it with love. And there was such truth in that. She felt it with every bite she had ever taken, and now she was experiencing it again. It was if she had stepped home.

Within moments, a tall woman stepped in front of her, so close they were practically touching.

“What do you want because I’m sure whatever it is, we’re out of it,” she sneered in Liv’s face. That warm, cozy feeling turned into a bone-chilling nightmare as Liv looked up into cold, gray eyes.

“I’m looking for the Scott family. Lawson told me about his parent’s restaurant, and I was hoping to talk to one of them,” she replied, scared to death but standing her ground. Surely, his family would welcome any information she had to offer.

The woman was tall. No, tall was an understatement. Liv was tall, but this woman was an Amazon, easily six feet tall. This woman was undoubtedly a shifter. But was she the shifter Liv needed to talk to?

Latching onto Liv’s arm, the woman drug her out the front door and down the two steps to the sidewalk leading to the parking lot. “Who are you and what do you know about my brother? Don’t play games with me because I won’t hesitate to snap your spine, female,” she spat, tightening the grip to Liv’s limb.

Now she saw the resemblance. It wasn’t just the gray orbs but the fire behind them. She had seen the same fury when Lawson retaliated against his attackers.

“My name is Oliva Kimbro. I’m a friend of Lawson’s, and I know where he’s currently being held a prisoner. He’s concerned about you, about all his family. I just wanted to tell him his family is safe. Can you help me?” she asked, and the woman released her grip.

“What about my father…and Ryan? Are they with him?” the woman asked as she gnawed on her lower lip.

Liv could tell the woman was on the verge of an emotional meltdown as worry replaced her anger. Eyebrows drawn together, she clutched nervously at her slender neck. Looking closer, Liv could see the dark circles under her eyes and knew this had to be one of the twin sisters he’d talked of so fondly.

He also told her how close he was to his sisters and how protective of them he was. Liv didn’t know which sibling was towering over her but the woman’s voice quivered when she spoke, and her hand trembled against her neck. Liv wanted to reach out and comfort her but stayed put.

Thinking about the woman’s questions, she knew Ryan was Lawson’s older brother, but Liv had no idea where he or their father was. “I’m sorry, I’ve only seen Lawson. I wish I had more information that might help. How long have they been gone?” Liv asked.

“They were taken about six months ago. It happened right here in front of the restaurant as they were closing up one night.” The woman began pacing and was now biting her thumbnail, clearly deep in thought.

Moments later she suddenly stopped. “If you know where Lawson is I need you to take me to him right now. I have to see him,” she pleaded.

Liv didn’t know what to say. She couldn’t take her to Lawson. Liv had no way of freeing him and more than likely his sister would end up chained to a wall, as well. He would never forgive her if that happened. She needed to find out if those extra rooms at PRL were empty or not. That was the only way she’d know for sure how involved her boss was in the kidnappings.

Liv was about to respond when another woman stepped out of the restaurant and made her way to over to the two of them. “Hannah, what’s going on? I need you in the kitch–,” she stopped mid-sentence when her eyes locked on Liv, “what’s she doing here?” she asked sharply.

Puzzle pieces clicked into place, and Liv realized these two women were the twin sisters. The one speaking must be Haylee. She looked identical to Hannah with the exception her hair was shorter, barely touching her shoulders. It was one of the rare times in her life that Liv felt like a midget standing between two women.

“She knows where Lawson is. He’s alive! Our brother is alive,” she squealed, throwing her arms around her sister as the tears flowed. The other woman hugged her back, and Liv watched the flood of emotion between them. It was hard not to get caught in their moment, and Liv found she was fighting off tears.

Turning to face Liv, Haylee gushed with excitement, “This is incredible news. Take us to him. I’ll grab my keys, and we’ll follow you. Is it far? We have to tell mom,” she rattled out so fast Liv almost didn’t understand her.

“Wait, stop. I can’t do that,” Liv answered, and watched the elation disappear from their faces.

“What do you mean you can’t?” The menace in Hannah’s voice had Liv wincing, but when her fight-or-flight instinct kicked in, she was practically bouncing on her feet.

“You can and you will. That’s my brother, and I’ll be damned if you’re leaving here without us,” Hannah snarled, and her previous anger returned with a vengeance. Haylee stepped to her sister’s side, showing their united front. Liv didn’t have a prayer against these two.

Swallowing hard against the building fear, she tried explaining, “I want to help. He’s being held prisoner at the company I work for. A medical research facility, PRL, maybe you’re familiar with it. My boss thinks shifter blood may cure cancer so you can imagine their refusal to release him. I need more time. I believe there are others there but I haven’t found them yet. Let me do some snooping before we decide how to get him out of there,” Liv proposed, praying they would see the logic behind her explanation.

The two women looked at each other and shared a silent conversation that Liv couldn’t decipher. She made a mental note to ask Lawson if shifters were telepathic. It could be as simple as twin’s innate connections to one another, but she was curious if shifters possessed any powers.

“Wait here, I’ll be right back,” Haylee blurted then darted up the steps, brown waves flying around her head as she moved. She disappeared inside the building and then seconds later reappeared. Her movements were lightning fast, and, once again, Liv wondered if that was a shifter trait.

“I don’t like this one damn bit, but we will agree because we know there are other shifters missing. If we acted rashly and it cost more lives, we would never forgive ourselves. I’m warning you, human, you have twenty-four hours. Not an hour more, understand? Here’s my card. It has the business number and my cell. I expect a call from my brother so I know he’s okay. We will be rescuing him whether you like it or not. I know exactly where PRL is and I’ll burn the fucker down if I have to,” Haylee demanded, leaving no doubt in Liv’s mind she would follow through on her threat.

“I’ll do my best. You’re not giving me much time, but I promise you’ll hear from Lawson. I’m going there now, and I’ll sneak my phone in,” Liv assured.

Jim was strict about items allowed in the room, but she could stuff it in her bra if she had to. In fact, she was upset with herself for not thinking of it before now.

“Don’t let us down or we’ll be hunting you,” Hannah stated firmly.

Liv didn’t have siblings, but she imagined she would do the same to protect and defend them. She would move Heaven and Earth if anyone ever harmed her mother.

“I will, I promise,” she replied as she hauled ass to her Jeep, stuffing the small card in her back pocket. The vehicle roared to life, and she punched the accelerator, tires spinning as she fishtailed through the gravel onto the street. She glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Lawson’s sisters watching as she drove away.

Next stop, PRL. She was in a race against time, and if she won, the prize was priceless. To be able to reunite Lawson with those he held near and dear was suddenly the most important mission in her life.

Unfortunately, it was going to take her doing something that had bile rising in her throat.
