Avenged Hearts (Mastered Hearts Book 3) by Angela Nicole (7)

Colton

I can hear the yelling from the squad room. It’s Miller. I can’t really make out what he is screaming, but I’m pretty sure it has to do with me.

Mickey comes back into the interview room with a smirk on his face. This has to be good news for me.

“What’s going on, Mickey?”

“Seems that since you and Tim have known each other, he’s assigned your case to a new ADA. I’ve got to be honest with you. This is a capital case, Colt. She may have something to prove by convicting you. Of course, this can work to your advantage too. She’s new.”

Jesus, it can’t be Goldie.

“Who is it? The new ADA, I mean.”

“Her name is Alex Russell. Alexandra, I think.”

Goldie.

“She just informed Miller that she’s not charging you with anything yet. Seems she’s not convinced of the eyewitness’s account.”

“You mean, I’m free to go?’

“For now, yes, but a word of advice. I know you didn’t do this, Colt. You and I need to meet tomorrow and discuss why the hell they believe that you did this. Murdering a cop is not a small thing. This is your life on the line Colt.”

“I’m taking this seriously, Mickey, but fuck, I didn’t do this. I can be at your office first thing in the morning. I don’t have any appointments until eleven.”

“Let’s go, but when we walk out of this room, you better keep your shit together. For some reason, Miller and Anderson want your ass in the electric chair.”

“Got it, boss,” I tell him.

The minute Mickey opens the door, I see Goldie. Miller is in her face, and he’s screaming at her for letting me go. Wanting to bash his face in, I start to make my way to her. Mickey stops me, and it’s probably a good thing. I know I didn’t murder Office Knight, but Detective Miller could be another story.

Not deterred by his aggression, Goldie speaks up. “Detective Miller, this is my case and I’m not going to charge this man based on your witness’s account. If you want me to charge Mr. Murphy, then bring me some convincing evidence.”

Damn. She’s even hotter when she stands toe-to-toe with that asshole.

“I know all about you,” Miller says. “I can’t believe Tim hired you after you let a murderer go free.”

What the hell.

“How can you live with yourself, knowing your client walked and murdered again?”

“What the fuck, Miller?” I rage.

Before Mickey can stop me, I close in. Goldie looks at me, warning me to stop. Pleading, actually. I can see it in her eyes.

“What the hell is going on in here?” It’s Tim.

“Nothing,” Goldie speaks up, never taking her eyes off Miller.

Miller blinks first. “Just a minor disagreement about the case. We’re good.”

“I sure as hell hope so, Miller. I’ve handed this over to Alex. I expect you to work with her in a professional manner.”

“No problem here, Tim,” Miller says as he brushes past Goldie.

I can’t take my eyes off her. Something isn’t right, and I have a feeling it has to do with what Miller said about her last case.

Mickey clears his throat. Goldie looks over at me and Christ, all I want to do is hold her in my arms. Well, maybe that’s not all I want to do.

“Let’s go before they change their minds, Colt,” Mickey says as he puts his hand on my shoulder.

I look over to Goldie, who’s looking down at her hands. I don’t like it, and I’m going to make sure she knows it tonight. I can tell my woman has been hurt by what Miller said to her.

Jesus. My woman? I need to chill the fuck out.

Even though I don’t want to leave her, knowing I’ll see her in a few hours helps.

As I leave with Mickey, I brush past Goldie, touching her lightly. Immediately, her eyes meet mine. They tell a story of pain, but there is a small smile she gives me—I’ll take it.

“See ya around, Ms. Russell,” I say, tipping my chin to her.

This is going to be an interesting night.
