After All This Time: Love or Money by Brown, Brittainy (33)

Reconciliation

Emily slammed the door after her as she got to her office. Right now, she was just so angry. She has done everything so what else was she supposed to do? All of a sudden she felt like going home, so she stood up to gather her files together into her bag so she could work on them once she got there.

Picking up her bag, she headed towards the door but stopped as the door opened and she saw the woman her boyfriend had left her for again.

“What the hell do you want?” She demanded, arms akimbo.

“I think you need to calm down and sit while you listen to what I have to say,” Charlotte said sternly.

“You are in no position to tell me what I need to do and how dare you barge into my office like that?”

“Well, I believe that what I need to tell you will be in your own interest so sit your ass down!”

Emily couldn’t believe this. She picked up her phone and was about to call security when Charlotte yanked the phone from her hand.

“Are you crazy?” She screamed at her. “You stole my boyfriend and now you are stealing my phone?”

“Just shut the hell up okay. No one is stealing your boyfriend!” Charlotte shouted and this must have calmed her down.

“So, what were you doing in his room last night, and at the club and in his office and now right here in my office?”

“Look, he took me to the club so he could celebrate my new position and we are old friends okay. I knew him right from college, we just met again a few times and we have been good friends since I moved back here.”

“I don’t quite follow.”

“Well, last night, he saw you dancing with Tommy and that got him jealous, so he asked us to dance as well. I know it was immature, but he was drunk. I had to take him home last night but since it was late and my clothes were dirty from his vomit, which I‘d rather not remind him about what happened, I had to take a shower. I had just come out of the shower when you came in. That shirt you saw me wearing was his, yea, but nothing happened. He was dead drunk last night. And now, I am here to explain to him that nothing happened between us last night. He had no memory of what happened, because he kept on talking about how perfect you are, how much he missed you and how much he wanted you back, while he was drunk. Even if I like him and I want something to happen very much, it can’t work, because he is still so much in love with you. So, goodbye Emily, you have no idea how lucky you are.”

Saying this, Charlotte handed her the phone and walked out of the room.

Emily sighed as she left. Her lips were bent in a lopsided grin. This was too good to be true, she was about to open the door again when it opened and Liam stepped in.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

“I guess she has told you everything she needed to tell you right?”

“Well, yea.”

‘So, now you are going to tell me, all I need to know to start with why you went clubbing with him.”

Emily sighed. “I think you will need to sit.”

Emily moved to her seat while he sat on the other seat in front of her desk.

“I thought you were moving on with the new look and nice shirts and I thought you were trying to get women’s attention again so I thought I should do the same.”

“Okay?”

“So, he took me out and well, seeing you with someone else there just... I don’t know. At first, I thought this was just a temporary thing but seeing you with that lady, I realized probably I had actually lost you and I just lost it. I was scared and heartbroken.”

Liam was smiling. “You were?”

“Yea.”

“So, what happened?”

“I, um, Tom decided to....” She stopped unable to continue.

“To what?” Liam asked, getting a bit angry.

“To take me to a hotel,” Emily blurted, biting her tongue immediately she said it.

“What? A hotel? You followed him to a hotel?” Liam snapped. “What the hell were you thinking?”

“I was thinking you were moving on!” She cried. “Please calm down, besides, we were on a break, I was free to do whatever I pleased right?”

“Daniel sighed. “Okay, continue.”

“So, I was surprised when he got one room and then to cut the story short, he made a move on me, I slapped him and rushed to your place, bumped into your other girlfriend and that was everything.”

“Well, he definitely was lucky that he got away with a slap, he won’t be lucky the next time I see him.”

Emily smiled and then started laughing.

“What is so funny?”

“I don’t know. This whole thing between us. It seems as if we never broke up at all.”

“Yea, like we went on a one-day vacation right?”

They both laughed and were quiet for a while. Emily stood up and moved closer to him.

“Liam, I don’t want fame more than love, I don’t care about money anymore. I have been so stupid and so selfish all this time to chase shadows and letting people and things come in between us. I should have been wiser and you have been right all along. You have been so supportive, kind and understanding and I took all that for granted.

Liam inhaled, taking her hand and was about to speak but she signaled to him to stop.

“Let me finish.”

“Okay. “

“So, I don’t want to fight anymore I have come to realize that you are my haven, and my confidante and the only one I can trust and depend on. You are my best friend and I really miss you. The reason I came to your place that night was that you are the only one I can think of when things are not right in my life. You are my everything and I will do anything to have you back in my life. Please forgive me for all the times I took you for granted, it will never happen again.”

Liam smiled and drew her closer, putting his arms around her waist. “Love is all about forgiveness and I haven’t been so perfect all the while. I admit that at a time I got jealous of your success. It’s a normal thing but I assure you that I am very proud of you. You are the most hardworking woman I have ever known but in the future, when you are caught up in something that is taking up most of your time, can you please not leave me behind?”

Emily nodded, with tears in her eyes. “I will never leave you behind, we are always going to be together, I promise.”

Liam brought his lips closer to hers and Emily leaned into him so her forehead rested against his. As their lips met, they both shut their eyes. After kissing for a while, she said in a whisper.

“Thank you.”

He chuckled while he kissed every part of her face. “Thank you for what?” he asked, in a low husky voice.

“For being you,” her voice wavered as a result of the tension in between them. Again she leaned in to kiss his lips but he reached for her head with one of his hands and pulled her closer for a fiery and passionate kiss. The abrupt ringing of the telephone seconds later left them panting as they stared at each other. It had been such a long time since they had wanted each other like that. Emily’s eyes glowed with excitement and love while his radiated with curiosity and passion.

“I have missed you so much,” he growled low, planting small kisses at the back of her neck while she reached for the telephone.

“Hello...yes...” she stood at alert and Liam knew something was wrong. She continued. “Okay, I will be there right away,” she said, putting the receiver back in its place.

“What is it?” Liam asked.

“That was Joe. He just called that the managing partner is around and that there would be a little dinner tonight. Baby, this is it! This is the moment I have been working my ass off all these weeks for,” she said excitedly.

“Yea. I know so what time is it exactly?”

“Joe said eight,” she replied. “You are coming with me, right?”

Liam thought for a while and shook his head. “No, I will be busy.” He waited to see the shock on her face but he laughed and kissed her instead. “I’m just joking with you. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Emily beamed with excitement but then stopped. “I will be okay even if I’m not made the partner. At least, I will rest assured that I still have you,” she said, leaning in to kiss him before pulling away. “I need to see Joe. You will be in your office right?” he nodded and watched as she left. Later he also left for his office.

By the time he got to his office, he met Daniel.

“Dude, what are you doing here?”

Daniel didn’t look excited as always.

“What is it?” Liam asked as he sat in his chair.

“I have some bad news man.”

“About who?”

“Your girlfriend. I just passed Joe’s office. Do you know that the managing partner is around?”

Liam nodded. “Sure I know, Emily told me.”

Daniel looked surprised. “Oh, you two are a couple again now?”

He nodded.

“That is really cool, you will give the details later but, the thing is, she might not be selected for the partnership.”

It was Liam’s turn to be surprised. “Really?”

“Yea. Just try and talk to her to saddle up for anything so she won’t be heartbroken or anything.”

“I understand, thanks, man. ”

Daniel nodded. “No problem. Congrats about you two. How did it happen?”

“Charlotte did it. She explained everything to her and Tommy tried to sleep with her so she slapped him. One thing led to another and now we are a couple again.”

“Wow! Well, I am happy for you. I got to go,” Daniel said, standing up.

“Ok, thanks, man.”
