The Run-In
As Emily stepped into the office, she was surprised to see Tom, who smiled on setting eyes on her. He was in a purple suit, looking even more dapper than the last time she had seen him,
“Hi, beautiful.”
“Hi Tom,” she replied, facing Joe. “You called me?”
“Yea,” Joe replied, “Are you free this evening?”
She frowned. She was supposed to have some time alone with Liam. “May I know what this is about?”
“Yea. There is a launch today in Detroit and Tom here wants you to accompany him.”
“Oh no! I can’t.”
“You will be meeting the CEO you know, all the heads in a single place, like the last time, but with fewer people, less crowded. You can get to know new things and make friends.”
Emily shook her head. It was tempting, but no. she wouldn’t disappoint Liam again.
Joe looked disappointed. “Emily, you should know he flew all the way down here to see you.”
“Well, phone is way faster, cheaper and easier, or even email” she said.
Joe shook his head regrettably. “I am so sorry Tom.”
“No, it’s okay Joe,” Tom said, standing up. “It’s okay. I just thought she would be interested that’s all. As the press thinks I started a new relationship at the Ball of Fame, I thought it would be a great chance to make them aware that there is nothing going on between us.”
“Wait, what did you say?” Emily asked.
“You heard me,” Tom replied, taking his leave.
“Okay wait. I will go with you but just to make things clear with whatever the press might think.”
“Okay.”

Liam was surprised to see Emily as she walked hurriedly into his office.
“What is babe? Are you okay?”
Emily sighed. “I have to go to Detroit right now.”
His heart sank. “What for?”
“There is a launch and...”
“What’s launching? Why do you have to go?”
“Please be patient, Liam.”
Liam was quiet. Then he continued in a calm manner. “I am sorry about that. I’m sure it’s important and you have to go, will you be back by evening?”
“Sure, definitely love,” she replied, glad that he was finally being reasonable. “I will, I promise.”
They kissed and she left.
Liam was boiling inside him and he knew he just needed to go talk some sense into Joe but he was going to wait till Emily left.

“Oh, Liam, how can I help you?” Joe asked, as Liam stepped in.
Liam walked closer to him, without taking a seat, he started. “Why do you hate me?”
“I beg your pardon.”
“Why are you hell-bent on sabotaging a relationship that means so much to me?”
Joe still looked confused. “I am not following, Liam.”
“Emily. I am talking about Emily. Is she the only one in the company? Is she the only one who was nominated? Don’t you have other people who you should be using as well?”
Joe smiled. “It’s okay to be jealous, you know?”
Liam gasped. “What are you talking about? Who’s jealous?”
“Well, obviously you are, and you can’t stand the success of your girlfriend. Look, if you can’t support her, then maybe it should be a warning to step up as well... but do you really need to start all this drama here in my office?”
Liam could feel the anger exploding inside him but he did his best to calm down.
“I am not jealous of my girlfriend’s success. She knows that I support her in every way and that I’ve got her back always.”
“Really? Then what are you doing in my office?”
Liam smiled. This was no use.
“The way you just burst into this office and everything you just said, do you think Emily would be proud of that?”
Liam sighed. He was definitely right about that.
“Have a nice day, Joe,” He said quietly and walked out of the office. When he got to his own office, he slammed the door angrily. His hands were already rolled into fists and he punched his desk so hard that he winced in pain.
He had been so supportive, why wouldn’t he be supportive? It was like he had no right to be angry and it was making him angrier.
He took a seat. He really needed to calm down, besides, she had said she would be back in Detroit by evening, that was enough to calm him down.
