Broken Headboards: Nights In New York Series Book 3 by Starr, Tara (37)

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Willis

They laughed at my designs during every single competition. Thought they were basically better than me.

Sure, I might have some odd designs. And maybe my stuff isn’t as good as Oakmont or Domina, but I try hard. That’s got to be worth something. Besides, if someone has a superior product and does better in the marketplace, it’s not fair for the people that don’t have such good products. It’s anti-competitive.

I know you probably might not agree, but letting the best win all the time just isn’t fair. Letting the strongest prevail is just cruel. At least that’s what I believe.

I look around as I sit down at the table in the seedy bar at the edge of Queens.

I think I’m maybe a few blocks from the airport, but that’s where my contacts wanted to meet.

It’s not long before two men sit down across from me.

“Willis,” one of the men says in an English accent. “My name is Hiram Hooskins. And this is my associate Peter Whorbacher.”

I look to the man sitting next to Hiram and nod. Hiram looks like he could come out of an English manor, with his bearing. But there’s something too slick about him.

I shrug. I don’t really care at this point. I was hired for a job. And I did it. I just want to get paid.

“You got my money?” I ask.

“Have you completed your assignment?” Hiram asks.

I nod and pick up a briefcase.

“Everything you want on pictures and video about Clarendon Tower is in there,” I say to Hiram. “Although why you want so much intel on a place filled with assholes is beyond me.”

Hiram doesn’t nod. He just takes the briefcase. “And the cameras?” he asks.

I nod my head.

“I installed discreet cameras to record everything in every common area,” I tell both men. “They’re recording and uploading to the server you asked me to route it to.”

Both men look pleased.

“Should we go see what we can find?” the man known as Peter asks Hiram.

He shakes his head.

“No,” he says. “Let them have their little moment in the sun. I’m looking for a way to buy a condo in the building. Once there, I’ll be able to monitor the cameras quite easily.”

See I’m not so dumb as everyone thinks. I knew from the get go that I wasn’t going to win the competition against Oakmont or Domina. And I hated that they were always winning. Seriously, they should set aside a few rounds to give those without the ability to do well a fair shot as well, but what do I know.

Anyways, when Hiram contacted me for doing some work on the side and getting paid for it, I jumped at the chance. Better to do the work that pays faster than get a Clarendon Tower contract that takes forever and requires all these upfront costs.

“Here you go, Willis,” Hiram says to me, handing me over a suitcase that Peter was holding. “Three million dollars in cash, for your services.”

Easiest three million I ever made in my life. Just take a few pictures and videos of Clarendon Tower and install some spy cameras and get paid 3 million dollars.

Not a bad 3 months work.

Why they want all this info though, I couldn’t care less.

I grab the briefcase with the money and head out with a nod to both men.

They continue scheming and plotting as I walk to the entrance.

I may not know much, but I do know this.

Whoever pissed off these two in Clarendon Tower is going to be sorry.

Hiram and this Peter–there’s only one thing they seem to be focused on right now.

Revenge.
